Product Description
Deservedly known as "The Originator", dance-hall DJ U-Roy first came to prominence in 1969 spinning discs at dances for the legendary King Tubby sound system. His ground-breaking and innovative style, interspersing the lyrics of the tunes he played with his own distinctive dialogues, earned him an immediate following and spawned scores of imitators. By 1970, he had reached the attention of prolific rock-steady producer Duke Reid who persuaded him to come into the studio and toast over some of the rock steady and roots classics of the day. These early works are collected here and have lost none of their freshness. U-Roy's powerful vocals swoop, dive and creak through massive tunes such as the Wailers' roots classic, "Small Axe", but it's the Paragons, fronted by John Holt, who give U-Roy the best material to work with in the huge hit "Wear You to the Ball". All the tracks on the album are gems thanks not only to the Originator himself, but also to Reid's superior production, and brought together they represent a superb collection of U-Roy's early work and a milestone in reggae history.--Duncan Thomson

King of the toasters showcase, 25 Aug 2007
I purchased this album on vinyl years ago and though sadly the symbolic dove and olive branch cover has gone the music sounds as fantastic as ever. The king-U-Roy suffered a bit of a career slump in the mid-seventies. A signing to the Virgin label and some heavyweight musicians soon set the record straight. This album contains some U-Roy version (and re-makes) of some of the best roots rhythmns around at the time. The Paragons provide vocal 'falavourings' to the two classic classics, Wear You to the Ball and Tide Is High. Worth the purchase of this CD alone. Also covered is the classic Marley track Small Axe (vocal and bonus dub)which is a masterpiece of Jamaican production.I cannot get over how wonderful this album is-it is an essential purchase for any roots reggae fan. From the telephone ring opening to the final one drop drum beat it is quality throughout.
In the words of the master-"Love is lovely and war is kinda ugly!"In the current times no truer words were ever spoken.Great!

The best, 26 Nov 2008
IMO, this is the best reggae album ever. OK I've not heard them all, but I just love this album. 'Love in the Arena' is simply one of the best reggae tracks I've ever heard. I like Bob Marley, but U-Roy gets the mix of vocals and music absolutely spot on.
I'm not West Indian, I'm not rastafarian, in fact I'm a Pink Floyd/Led Zeppelin fan, indeed someone what has an interest in many musical genres, but if you have any liking for reggae buy this.
