This title isn't just a joke. It makes the valid point that these Renaissance pieces occupied the same place in their culture as our pop music does in ours. People whistled these tunes in the street and danced to them at night, and you can easily accept the disc's title when hearing the Baltimore Consort's extremely lively performances, which have all the rhythmic drive and gusto of a good rock band. The ensemble's arrangements and the variety of its programming also contribute to the success of this disc, which would make an excellent introduction to music of the period. The booklet contains translations of all the vocal texts, and Dorian's sound leaps out of the loudspeakers with great clarity and presence. --Leslie Gerber

For people buying I roy for the first time they will love this cd. But for the collectors of this great mans music will be left with a sick taste in their mouths,The word unique is used, but only a few tracks are unique to this cd.Beware tracks 1,5,13,14,can be found on a earlier issues called Heart of a lion.Tracks 2,12 are on the Blackman time cd again under different titles. With this in mind beware when buying this cd.

I-Roy was the most lyrical of the dancehall DJs of the late-1970s and this is well demonstrated in the excellent toasting he drops over some of the dub plates on Musical Shark Attack. Not all the tracks here are classics, but tunes such as the mighty "Drum Sound" and the title track show why I-Roy is at the top of the heap: his voice is strong, melodic and compelling. Rather than repeat clichéd dancehall phrases like many of his contemporaries, he delivers conscious and intelligent comment and, bizarrely, lines from popular nursery rhymes superbly underpinned by the strong dub versions he uses. Musical Shark Attack does not necessarily represent I-Roy's finest work, but there's not a duff track on the album, indeed some of it is wonderful. --Duncan Thomson
