Reggae music has changed greatly since the 1960s. Some may find Shabba a bit offensive; I admit, there are a few tracks on this CD that I wouldn't play (as a DJ) but Shabba has definitely put Jamaica dancehall music on the map. Sean Paul is continuing the process now.
The successful collaborations are all here plus all the great hits.
This CD is like the history of JA music from the late 1980s to the present.
It also contains the track "Dem Bow" which led to the Panamanians and Puerto Ricans developing their own reggaeton music.
This album will prove to you whether or not you can dance or if you are still too shy to dance. Come out of your shell, ladies and gentlemen. Buy this and dance!! It's worth every penny!

Product Description
Before their reinvention as a remix-friendly pop band. Before Sharleen Spiteri became a sex symbol of sorts. Before the relegation of the other members (in video clips and photo shoots) to baffled anonymity. Back in the day--1991, to be precise--when Texas, true to their name, were a gutsy little country-flavoured rock combo, rather in the style of Lone Justice. "I Don't Want A Lover" bought the Glaswegian quartet to attention, but also set a standard that neither their debut album, nor this one, their sophomore effort, quite managed to equal. Yet for all their rootsy flourishes, they were still first and foremost a rock band: producer Tim Palmer gave them a slick AOR sound, and made the most of their strengths--notably Ally McErlaine's lonesome slide guitar, on the brooding "This Will All Be Mine". But Spiteri's vocals were colourless, and many of the songs seemed perfunctory. Now, of course, they've embraced dance-pop with the same kind of cautious acceptance they once reserved for country music and the blues. Neither fish nor fowl, as ever. --Andrew McGuire

A good follow up!, 09 Feb 2004
This is every bit as good as 'Southside' - I am writing a review some ten years after buying it, but it has stood the test of time (even though I once took *only this* with me on a trip to the Isle of Barra, by mistake - such a long time with only one piece of music would normally have put me off for life!). Bluesy and ballsy, and - though not wishing to belittle their achivements - generally better than their more recent albums.
Scottish blues, 09 Jul 2003
Surprised to see just the one review for this album and that it's only given a 3 star rating. Southside was class. But to me the next two albums are better - that's Mothers Heaven and Rick's Road. Both bluesy, both with catchy tunes. No hesitation in recomending these to blues fans. Texas fans that only came in at the White on Blonde stage might not get what they expected though.
Not as good as their debut, 28 Sep 2000
"Mothers Heaven was the second album by Texas and the follow up to their debut album "Southside". The album saw a change in style for the band and despite the fact that the album is not bad it fails to live up to the high expectation created by their debut album. This album is a lot darker than it's predecessor, which is maybe not what the fans were expecting as the album is nowhere nearly as commercially accessible as their debut which had a very pop meets rock style. The album is not bad its just that it had a lot to live up to and the album doesn't quite meet the benchmark set by "Southside" with the tracks being rough, dark and hard sounding and not as "pop" based as those on their debut album such as the brilliant "I Don't Want A Lover". The highlights on the album include "Why Believe In You", "This Will All Be Mine" and "Alone With You" and these are really the only tracks that I feel are good enough to be included on "Southside".

In the early 90s, Shabba Ranks was a world star. His music sold well in the UK and he even had a spitting image puppet. Since then ragga has drifted away from the mainstream with people like Glamma Kid making minimal impact with the public. This album reminds me how the genre used to be. I am not a huge ragga fan but really enjoy this album. It chronicles all Shabba's big hits from his early days in Jamaica to his latter work in the US which didn't penetrate these shores. Some of it isn't too great, but the pure nostalgia of hits like Mr. Loverman make it a worthy purchase. It may not appeal to hardcore ragga fans, the American stuff especially, but for those who remember him first time round its a lot of fun and despite being cheesy in parts is actually quite good.

The best reggae collaboration of all time., 11 Jul 2002
Home T/Cocoa Tea/ Shabba Ranks-‘Pirates Anthem’. What do you get if you cross the soulful voice of Cocoa Tea, the quality and Style of Home T and the legendary Shabba Ranks all on one album? The answer is the best reggae collaborations of all time. This album has it all…distinctive beats, catchy lyrics heavy production from Gussie Clarke and some very classic tunes. ‘Pirates Anthem’ is an outstanding tune, cussing the Government and biggin’ up the DJs, and was the first ever tune to be played by kiss fm, not to mention being an NME single of the week…. I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t feel this track. Other classic tracks on the album are ‘Stop Spreading Rumours’, ‘Turn it Down’ and ‘Holding On’. There are two solo tracks from each artist as well, including ‘Camouflage’ by Cocoa Tea, which has to be by far the best vocals he has ever done. The album also includes an awesome remix of ‘Pirate’s Anthem’ , check it out. There won’t ever be another reggae album holding this much quality, don’t miss out on it!
