Another great release from the Nutty boys!
This German release was released back in 2007, alongside a feature film, that contained NW5 and a remix of It Must be Love.
The EP contains 4 tracks, NW5 (the radio edit), It Must Be Love (A longer Rerecording), NW5 (Full Length) and NW5 (Live from 06 Tour)
It is important to note that the NW5 on this release is a different version than the english release, and in my opion it is not as good as the newer english version which is more upbeat and textured. But all in all it is a great release.
It is a must have for any Madness fan!
Plus it includes the NW5 video in the theme of the film featuring Suggs, Chas, Woody and Actors from the film. It also includes the New Must be Love Video which featured in the films credits and a making of video (in German). A must have for a Madness Fan!
They've still got it!, 24 Feb 2008

I was inspired to buy this after seeing their great performance on Jools Holland's show and i wasn't dissapointed. The title track is a charming slice of retro styled ska-pop opening with a nice little piano hook. The Full Length Version has a long, extended outro. B-side Bittersweet works equally well. The only let down is the Man Like Me remix - it's not a dance version at all but just a weird reworking full of random noises, i wasn't that keen on it.
Special mention must also go to the packaging - i was well surprised when i bought the CD thinking it'd come in just a standard jewel-case but instead it comes in this fake vinyl packaging - it's a cool little touch and i like it!
Track listing:
1. NW5 (Radio Edit)
2. NW5 (Full Length Version)
3. Bittersweet
4. NW5 (Man Like Me Remix)
Great song, shame about the production, 14 Feb 2008
This is a classic Madness pop song, but I can't help feeling that the production on this record leaves something to be desired. The general sound is a bit "mushy", Suggs sounds like he's got a sore throat and the backing vocals are out of tune on the line "for just a song to sing". Still can't wait for the new album though, whenever that will be released!
not sure on the pacakaging, 02 Feb 2008
Madness have come up trumps again with a classic song here but two points of note.
1) im not sure if they should have released nw7. I think bittersweet (the b-side) is much better and should have been the a-side.
2) the packaging that i got was a little annoying as i couldn't store it with the rest of my cd's, had to be in my vinyl collection which is annoying. That said get the disc and the track because these guys could be one of the few good things to come out of the music industry this year
MADNESS sheer joy!!!, 14 Jan 2008
Its always great to hear that Madness are releasing new material and it seems that the muse has not left them. NW5 is a bittersweet slice of classic English pop music in true Madness fashion. There really is no other modern band who could turn a potentially downbeat set of lyrics into something so wonderful and joyful. In a lesser bands hands this wouldnt have worked, but Madness prove they still have that edge, an edge that puts them in the higher echelons of fine British pop music.
A truly great track for the now, a future classic.

where's Lee?, 10 Jun 2007
I've followed the Madness story since Baggy Trousers and have been very happy with the stuff they've put out since they reformed. I'm going against the flow here and have to say I don't care much for this single. The Sway/Baby Blue version is best, but the versions are all quite similar.
I have two problems with the single:
a: is it really a Clanger/Winstanley production coz it sounds rushed and the vocals are particularly poor, not something I've ever heard before on a Madness record.
b: is it really Madness? This lacks any of the trademark sounds (apart from the vocals) The piano intro made me want more Barson, but there was none. The brass is nice, but where is Lees' fantastic sax. It's sad to say but it could be anyone. "Wonderful" had all those trademarks and I personally want them back! Hope the much talked about NW5 is better.

Long Live Madness, 20 Feb 2007
Went to the Madness gig at Wembley in December 2006, heard 'Sorry' live. It sounds great. I agree with another review Madness do deserve another number one so as he said download it or buy the CD twice. As Madness has had only had one number one in their whole carer since 1979, which was 'House of Fun' in 1982, but so many great songs. I know most people can't believe that, everyone dances along to Madness at parties, everyone old & young remember their songs. If you want to hear a remix of 'Sorry' online go to Madness official 'myspace site', where at the moment you can hear a remix of Sorry for free.
LONG LIVE MADNESS!
Not Sorry To Buy It, 18 Feb 2007
With some really good material coming out this year from The Nutty Boys, do yourselves a favour and pre-order this new single and put the most charted band of the 80's back in the top ten.
This is a little bit of traditional Madness complimented with Sway and Baby Blue for the modern market. Go on buy it now!!!
PS If NW5 (classic Madness track) gets released in June buy it twice, a second Madness No1 is long over due...

I love this album. I bought it shortly after it was released. Standout tracks despite what others say about the singles are
Whats That (classic cathal song)
Nail down the days
In Wonder (my personal favourite off this album)
Gabriels Horn (check out the mix on the re-released It must be love cd)
Oh! (fantastic lyrics)
Nightmare Nightmare
All in all a triumph, just a shame most Maddies fans werent ready for this departure from the traditional madness sound. I've always loved madness and this is no exception. Try it out and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Would the real Madness please stand up??, 14 Jul 2005
I've been a Madness fan for years and I remember when this was released. (1988 I think) I got just as excited as for any previous releases... but no one else did!! The album was unfairly judged upon release as people expected 'that nutty sound' but got this - a far more serious and grown up Madness singing about real life (as usual), but the darker side of life not just the happy days of the 'Baggy Trousers' era. Anyway if you've listened to their previous album 'Mad not Mad' and liked it then Id recommend this. If you haven't heard Mad not Mad, then buy that first and then you'll be ready for this. In general I think this album has stood the test of time a lot better than some of the earlier Madness material and it's time it started to get the recoginition it deserves. As with a previous reviewer Id have to say that the two singles that were released 'I pronounce you' and 'Whats that' were probably the weaker tracks. My personal favourite tracks are 'Nightmare, Nightmare' and 'Nail down the days' but this is a great album and needs to be listened to completely, its not just a few good singles with filler tracks - there's not really a bad track here at all! For an insight into the sound think of earlier Madness at their most relaxed -'Yesterdays Men','Grey Day','Sweetest Girl' and even 'Waiting for the Ghost train' and you'll figure where this album came from! :) To conclude, this is the one Madness cd that is always in my car. Every time I listen I seem to find another layer, and thats after 17 years!
The Madness, 07 May 2004
"The Madness" was a departure from the remaining members of Madness who had decieded to carry on following their split in the late 80's. The sound is a lot more polished and the songs themselves are very well-crafted. It may be different from the sound of Madness but that isn't a bad thing. In fact, if you are looking for something a little different then you should certainly give "The Madness" a try. The album sounds very 80's and very good too. Recommened.
Different, but definitely worth a listen, 17 Jun 2001
I can remember feeling really dissapointed when this was released. It just wasn't what i was expecting and consequently i put it away for some time. Recently i "rediscovered" it and, was pleasantly surprised by what i found. If you listen with an open mind you will hear the maddies musical genius, through the mix of unfamiliar musical styles. Lyrically this is one of the darkest albums they released and IMO is a little spoiled by the overuse of synthesized sounds, but there are some real gems here. Nail Down the Days, Song in Red, Nightmare Nightmare and the haunting In Wonder contrast well with the juxtaposition of lyrics and melody that is Oh and Beat the bride. In fact, the 2 singles from this album are probably the poorest on here and coupled with it's rather radical departure in style IMO is the reason it wasn't very well recieved at the time. Recommended
