Just Absolutely Brilliant, 09 May 2003
I bought this CD to add to my collection and am glad I did, it is amazing. The only problem there is not enough music on the CD
Truly the Best of Brass, 12 Jun 2002
Very little information given with this CD, other than composer & arranger. However, if you want to hear the band at its peak (1960's), and the legendary cornet player Jim Shepherd play Napoli and John Clough on euphonium with Grandfathers clock, you must buy this CD.
Good traditional brass band melodies, 06 Jan 2001
An excellent CD by one of my favourate Brass Bands. The tunes are well performed and in a traditional brass band style. Well Orchastrated with a relaxing programme.

You don't have to be a Northener by birth and a Yorkshireman by heritage to enjoy this collection of brass band music, there's something for everyone - well, almost everyone - ranging from music for reflection or devotional purposes, through the classics and works written especially for brass bands to arrangements of jazz and popular music (none of the more modern pieces though) as well as some stirring marches. For the purist perhaps the differing standards of the twenty two bands featured (some alas no longer with us) may be irksome but I know of nothing else which captures the spirit and range of 'banding' so well. A unique collection and one which gives a great feel for a part of our English heritage which has been increasingly been taken up across Europe and in North America in recent years! Plenty of stuff for your money, 16 Oct 2003
Can't give it the fifth star because with so very many tracks there are bound to be duplicates of what one already possesses. Perhaps not quite fair of me but there you have it. In terms of how much brass you get for your brass --- that's a pun? --- then this comes up trumps [or is it flugel horns?] Glad I bought it. And the recording quality can't be faulted. Bruce M-S +++
Surely a "must have" collection, 18 Apr 2002
I have only recently started buying Brass CDs and this collection has been a fantastic "Kick Start". There are loads of tunes that I had hoped were on it but didnt know the name of, if you get my drift. Sure , because some of the recordings are low rent there is the occasional "oops" moment with volume levels but I would say the quality is going to be acceptable to all but Audiophiles. Some great individual performances on each of the 4 CDs. If you are reading this because youve just bought Brassed Off and have clicked a link, buy this , you'll love it, and its cheap !
Interesting compilation of light 'brass band classics', 11 Jan 2002
This CD is quite hard to assess. Some would say it comprises some of the 'cheesiest' brass band numbers, whilst otheres would say its a great compilation of recordings from the hey day of old fashioned brass banding. Many of the bands no longer have the same names as they play under on the CD and many of the recordings leave a lot to be desired compared to the standard of brass bands nowadays and the modern recordings they do. Despite this the CD is a great trip down memory lane and makes for some nostalgic listening.
Excellent collection of Brass Band standards., 08 Jan 2000
Superb selection of tracks played by some of the best bands in the world. The choice of music is varied and you would find it difficult not to find something that you liked.

Top playing at a great price, 14 Aug 2003
Quite simply this is one of the best CD's of brass band playing I have heard (and I am a fan) A good selection of music that tends more to the light side of the repertoire (no big heavy test pieces here). What sets this album apart is the fantastic playing - through out the whole CD the band are on top form and the final production is excellent. My only gripe would be the lack of sleeve notes - but that doesn't stop it getting 5 stars. Whether you are a die had band fan or have never heard a brass band get this album - you will not be disapointed! Brass band fans I challenge you to find any recording with better Soprano Cornet playing!!!
Brasses Off, 06 Mar 2002
Remember the film Brassed Off? Yes? then this is where you heard it first, a great selection of music and very well recorded. Buy It
Great Music, Fantastic Playing, budget price!, 01 Dec 2001
A budget priced CD - the quality of music and playing on this CD is outstanding. For non band fans there is a great selection of diverse pieces all played with much musicality and great energy. For band fans this is a must - the quality of playing is exceptional - including some of the best soprano playing you are likely to hear anywhere.
One of the best from Grimethorpe, 08 Dec 2000
A great album featuring a good mix of classics like William Tell and more contemporary pieces such as Macaurthur Park and Mr Jums. It also includes two lesser known but equally good marches and probably the best recording of Wagner's Prossesion to the Minster that i've heard. an essential buy for any brass fan.

Williams-Fairey Band - lovebox weekender!!!, 25 Jul 2007
I'd never heard of this band before the Lovebox Weekender. I like most types of music, so happily sat down to listen...they were playing "old skool" house music!!! I was in my element!!
Absolutely excellent, which is why I am now on this site about to purchase their album!!!
Seen it, heard it, love it!, 11 Oct 2006
Acid House meets brass band seems weird, but really works. I saw the Williams Fairey band playing an Acid Brass set at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival a few years ago. No amplification necessary: they were LOUD. Some of the people in the audience obviously thought it was a joke ... until the band started to play. A lot of the brass-band followers weren't quite sure what to make of it, but the acid house crowd loved it. One of the most enjoyable live gigs I've ever been to.
Don't play it in the background, wind up the volume and revel in the sheer power and musicality of one of the best brass bands in the country playing music you actually want to hear.
What a winner!, 28 Mar 2005
My boyfriend and I first heard 'Voodoo Ray' playing as some ambient background music in 'Loungelover'. After finding out that it was by the Williams Fairey Band I decided to buy it for my boyfriend as a bit of a "Do you remember this from Valentine's Day?" novelty gift. He loved it and has played Voodoo Ray back to back for what seems like an eternity! As if this isn't enough he is now trying to convert all of his mates - and they are coming round, slowly. It is a truly great cd. If you weren't to know the tracks they sound like great melodies, well played, by a brass band. Ideal for a bit of background music when you've got mates over for dinner. Better still don't tell them what it is as when it finally dawns on them 'I know this track' the look on their faces is pricesless... Pacific 202 is a winner if you're laying in bed, in the dark. Try it sometime!
Quite Bizzare, 01 Dec 2004
I bought this as a present for someone and it was one of the most bizzare things I have ever heard. Old club anthems from my youth where I frantically waved my arms around, blowing my whistle suddenly became melodic and strangely relaxing. I recommend this to anyone who wants to hear a new slant on those ACCCCIIIIIIIDDDD days. I want them to produce a Happy House Brass next with classic anthems such as Gat Decors Passion and Shine On!!
Wonderful, 09 Nov 2004
Once in a while something comes along that you reckon must be well worth getting "for a laugh". I bought this album for that sole reason. Hell, the thought of Cubic 22 blasted out by a colliery band? Truly beautiful. But then something happened - I listened to the full album and realised that it wasn't just a laugh, it is something else. It's wonderful. Eighties house anthems played with real power and emotion by a brass band. An album of tracks that reminds us that music isn't all about being genre specific, that the ludicrous record store racks of categories and sub-categories serve only to create legions of music fans that grow up blinkered to a true love of music. This album isn't about cynically combining two over hyped genres to broaden demographic appeal and shift more units (nothing personal Limp Bizkit...). It's about timeless melodies receiving fresh interpretation through the power and emotion of brass. It's been a long time since I've listened to anything that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and a shiver go down my spine. The cover of KLF on this album did just that. Don't buy this album because it's a surreal novelty. Buy it because it's great!

Grimethorpe Colliery Band, 22 Jan 2006
This emotive collection of music expertly portrayed, stirs memories of my time playing within a similar band many years ago. The crisp hair raising tingle that accompanies such delivery will never leave me. Priceless.
Some good pieces, but others not suited for a CD, 31 Oct 2000
This CD starts off with two pieces of music known to most of the people that have seen the movie Brassed Off, Grimethorpe's favourite march, Death or Glory, and the nice flugel horn solo Concierto de Aranjuez, played by the soloist Mark Walters. He plays the tune which was made famous by Tara Fitzgerald in the film "Brassed Off". They then move on to play Purcell Variations (pronouced Persil Variations) by Kenneth Downie. In my opinion this piece isn't a piece I would put on a CD, I don't know why, but the band play it very good. Next is the principal cornet of the band Richard Marshall who plays Herbet Clarke's cornet solo, From the Shores of the Mighty Pacific, he plays it absolutely superb, what a player. The Overture Abu Hassan is next by the band, a very nice piece played very well. Melvyn Bathgate comes next to play The Lark in the Clear Air, his sonourous sound suits this piece to bits. Next is Howard Snell's The Pines Of Rome, its a piece which describes an army coming over the hill. Its a piece that starts very quietly and progresses to a monster sound (the solo cornets are up to fff in the end) this piece is also played very well by the band. The principal Euphonium at the time of this recording was Mike Kilroy and he plays Steve Sykes's Carnival Cocktail very well indeed, its a tricky piece, but Mr. Kilroy plays it as though it was the first page on a Tune of a Day book. Ray Farr is the man whose responsible of arranging 'Riverdance' and the band show in this piece they can create a nice sound at the slow first bit, and they can also produce a ff at the end. The trombone section (+ second Euph, Simon Kingsley (i think)), where they play "It's Alright", this piece also features a trumpet soloist, and the band play it really well. A quick march follows this piece, Barnum and Bailey's favourite, composed by Karl King, the young American whose known for his quick circus marches, this is also played very well. Robert Readhead's piece, Isiah 40 was commisinoed to be played in the British Open in 1997. This is the piece that 'Grimey' finish this CD, and how well they play it. On the whole a very good CD, displaying all the talents of the soloists.

An excellent CD by one of my favourate Brass Bands. The tunes are well performed and in a traditional brass band style. Well Orchastrated with a relaxing programme. Stirs the blood..., 30 Mar 2006
On the whole a very good CD, displaying all the talents of the soloists.
dismal, 04 Mar 2005
Digitally remastered from old Pye recordings the effect is simply painful. I could not comment on what it may have sounded like on vinyl, but on CD the effect is lifeless, the bass part often sounds slightly out of tune, the arrangements are tedious, and multiple verses are often simply repeated (ad nauseam). The selection of hymn tunes include many stock favourites, but the rendition would be worthy of a junior school band. Perhaps the only reason for having it is to remind us how much better some other recordings can be. Peter Lines Narembeen, Western Australia
Hymns 'n Brass, 19 Jan 2005
This is a glorious selection of hymn tunes, beautifully played. I'm only sorry that there is no 'Volume 2'with more of the same.
Musically enchanting and highly enjoyable to listen to, 09 Dec 2000
The strength of each brass instrument is displayed in this album with such passion that after listening to it, you just want to learn to play yourself. I've listened to this nearly everyday, since I've bought it and I've now taken the trumpet up- I would love to be in a brass band.
