Product Description
Songs in the Key of Life was the highest high-point of Stevie Wonder's career. More sprawling than Innervisions and Talking Book, this 2 LP-plus-EP was also less of a consistent stunner than either of those masterworks. That Songs retains an enormous amount of visionary relevance, though, is demonstrated not only in Coolio's borrowing of "Pastime Paradise" as a template for "Gangsta's Paradise", but in the cold-as-ice synthesized string quartet of "Village Ghetto Land". This is Stevie, so naturally that cut's anger is balanced by the ultra-buoyant "I Wish," "Sir Duke", and "Another Star". --Rickey Wright

The peak of perfection., 10 Oct 2008
Can anybody think of many double albums on which every track is even 'good' let alone a master work? They are very few and far between as the majority of them just go on for far to long with too much 'filler'. And so we come to SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE by MR. Stevland Morris.
After the masterpiece which was INNERVISIONS in 1973, Stevie Wonder released this magnum-opus in 1976. Is it as good as INNERVISIONS? The answer is a resounding YES, YES, YES!
Up-lifting and beautiful, happy yet melancholy, it doesn't get any better than this.
Go and buy it.
Stevie's Magnum Opus, 15 Aug 2008
I can't add much to what's already been written here. This is an essential album - though I regard all of the following as essential too:
Talking Book
Innervisions
Fulfillingness First Finale
If you're new to Stevie's work, please don't buy a collection, you'll be missing out on so much!
an absolute classic stevie wonder youre cool!, 20 Jul 2008
this a fantastic double album all the songs are fab i also recommend the albums music of my mind talking book and innervisions and original musiquarium there fantastic buy this you wont regret it!!
"Wonder" ful, 29 Jan 2008
Have the vinyl. Now got the CD and its still timeless. I have many favourites. Love "I am singing" this sums up stevies life in music.
The song writing is 1st class. in my view far better than Lennon/Mccartney ever were. This guy does the lot himself. This album should be in every collection. best selling double album of all time, i believe. Well justified.
Stevie's Best, 10 Jan 2008
Somehow it seems uncool to rate an artist's most succesful album as their best, but I make no apology for doing so in this case.
By 1976, Stevie Wonder had established himself as perhaps the first black artist who could consistantly sell albums in all markets around the world, winning awards, including best album Grammys. It is amazing to think that he had been around for over a decade, but was still only 26 years old. He wrote, sang, played and produced with the maturity of a much older man.
My favorite tracks are 'As' which was the third or fourth single so didn't do too well, but the lyrics are worthy of Smokey. It is the last word in love songs. It was revived a few years back by George Michael and Mary J Blige. I also like 'Village Ghetto Land', a biting social commetary. Then there is 'If It's Magic' a stunningly simple track with just Stevie's voice and a harp. It calls for a wider universal love.
As a teenager, I saved pocket money for weeks to buy the vynil, and replaced it on CD as soon as it was released. Now here it is remastered for next to nothing! People don't realise they are born today!

Very restful and soothing - according to the missus - and good value, too!, 11 Jun 2008
My wife (for whom I bought it) says that this CD set is very restful and soothing and I have to say that I quite like to hear the singing in the background whilst I slave away at the computer. And, of course, the great thing is that we got two CDs for about the price of one. Excellent!
Fine singing from Downside monks and choir, 25 Jan 2008
This is a lovely album of Gregorian classics, beautifully sung. And, of course, if you like the music: why not spend time at the monastery itself, which is near Bath? Why bathe in the thermal springs when one can bathe in the Divine Liturgy?

Managed Expectations Make This a Good Christmas CD, 10 Oct 2008
When I heard Casting Crowns was releasing a Christmas CD, I couldn't wait. I love their music for taking the familiar and making me look at it in a fresh way. So when I got this CD I was a little disappointed with the play list. It is mostly familiar carols. But once I started listening to it, that feeling went away.
Yes, the familiar carols are here and are plentiful. Yet they sound beautiful. There are gorgeous harmonies on "O Come All Ye Faithful." The guitar is fun on "Joy to the World." "Sweet Little Jesus Boy" gets a new melody. With a string background, it sounds like a lullaby. And the instrumental version of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel" is absolutely breathtaking. It is written for violin but the interplay between it and the piano (and to a lesser extent the orchestra) is haunting.
Only one song on here is truly new. "Christmas Offering" is a praise song, and I truly enjoy it. I've only heard "God is with Us" recorded one other place, by Amy Grant on the Gloria project. This version doesn't stray far away from the original. In fact, it is sung entirely by one of the female members of the group.
And that brings us to "While You Were Sleeping." When I first heard them sing it on LIFESONG, I thought it sounded like a Christmas song. Apparently, it originally was. The only change here is the second verse. Instead of going to Jerusalem, it focuses on the hardships of Mary and the baby that first night. The song sounds the same. And it includes the third verse that focuses on America. I'm still not a fan of that verse, but I have softened to it some over the years.
But I've saved the best for last. The disc opens with a new melody for "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day," including a new chorus sung by a boy's choir. It really makes the song come alive in a new way.
I wish they had taken the time to write a few more original tracks for this disc. But what is here is certainly enjoyable. I know I will listen to this CD for many years to come.

Beautiful singing by an excellent group, 20 Oct 2008
This was the first time I had heard the Libera group as I was sent the CD as a gift. To begin with I really didn't care for some of the music - remember I hadn't heard this style of choral singing before and it took a bit of getting used to, but I sat down on Saturday and listened right through and by the time it was finished I was hooked. I loved the setting of Bach's Air on a G String in particular, and then right at the end the performances of Blake's Little Lamb and the In Paradisum are exquisite. This is a very fine choir matching in quality the Westminster Cathedral choristers, and I really can't recommend the disk too highly.
BrilliantI, 10 Oct 2008
I am a new fan of Libera and am certainly not dissapointed. I heard them on a chat show on TV and immediately ordered the CD. I have had to wait a while for it - almost two months - but wow! was the wait worth it. The Solos are second to none, these boys have awesome voices. I will order some of the earlier CD's and am finding othert reviews very helpful in this. I would love to hear them sing The Wind Beneath My Wings. Ever hopeful.

Out of this world, 22 Mar 2008
Where does one begin. The latest album from LIBERA (new dawn) is out of this world. The selections are wonderful and Robert Prizeman as usual, has given us more of his wonderful music, that I personally feel, comes from God. The harmonies are breath taking and each solo is beautiful. I would like to say something about every soloist, but that would take way too long. From the six soloists I have chosen two to tell you about. The first is Tom Cully. Tom's voice will send shivers all over your body. He has a beautiful voice and his range will astound you. He also hits a few notes that will amaze you. In my opinion, his voice gets better every time I hear him sing. The other soloist I enjoy hearing, and watching is Josh Madine. Josh has a beautiful voice, well suited to the songs that he sings, but what I also enjoy about him is his infectious smile. He always looks so happy and everytime he smiles, I smile, I can't help it, it just happens. As I said before, I could say something about every soloist, but it would take too long. So, now it's up to you, buy this CD and while your at it get a copy of the DVD, and you'll get to know the boys as I have, and in no time you will get to know their individual voices. When you listen to a song over & over as I have with "In Paradisum," you will find that the soloist (Edward Day), who was chosen to sing this particular song, was the right boy for the song. When you hear him sing, you will understand what I am saying. In my opinion, it was like this song was written for him, or you might say, for his voice. When you hear "In Paradisum" in its intirety you will also fall in love with the harmonies, which are just spectacular, but you could say that of every song that LIBERA sings. There is one other song that I would like to say something about, and that is my favouite Enya song that the boys sing, "Orinoco Flow." Well, the boys do a great job with this song, and as I just said a moment ago, the harmonies will amaze you. I must tell you that on April 4th, I will finally get to see & hear LIBERA in person, and I can't wait, I'm so excited. It will be a 7-8 hour drive to get there, but it will be well worth it. And to keep me company, I own every album that LIBERA have recorded, so I will enjoy my trip. If you are reading this and have never heard LIBERA before, you will not be disappointed if you buy this CD.
Brilliant as expected, 20 Mar 2008
Pre-ordered this when I saw it listed on Amazon, and could not wait for it to arrive. As usual when it did arrive it was straight on the Cd player for uninterrupted bliss. I don't know how you could beat these lads for pure perfection, I will never tire of listening to them. At times of stress they are by far the best tonic and I would thoroughly recommend them for everyone to ease a tired mind. Can't wait for the next one which I'm sure will be just as brilliant. Well done and thank you to all those involved in making it.
SERIOUSLY SUPERB, 06 Mar 2008
Yet more from Libera for my survival kit of their so peaceful, soothing and incredibly accomplished music. Every voice has, as ever, clearly been trained to perfection for its contribution to the overall fabulous blend, and in their skill the soloists really do defy belief, especially for singers who are so young. My only concern is the complexity of some of the solos and therefore the pressure for those who will be singing them live in high-profile concerts, etc. However, these appear always to have been risks that were carefully calculated by Libera's Director thus far, and I guess the same will be true again. New Dawn equals the very best of Libera to date, and that is praise indeed.

Christian music 'critique', 31 Mar 2008
This album remains one of the best, Anything but dull, real joy in worship with many favourites. I love this style of music and it does justice to the wonder of God's mighty works.
Great when you have friends round or just listening in the car or at home.
Wonderfully inspirational tracks.
Negative Feedback: Best Worship Songs... Ever Vol.1, 19 Aug 2007
Being a lifelong Christian, it is fair to say I have heard a lot of Christian music. This CD is quite simply The Worst I have heard, as a compilation it is weak; the songs are tepid and lack real depth of meaning. Ideal for the lacklustre; I believe the Lord deserves more!
One of the best compilations, if not THE best, 16 Feb 2007
I have been a born-again Christian for many years, but it is only within the past couple of years that I have begun to take an interest in modern Christian music outside of church. I purchased the sequel to this album before I had heard of this album, and I then purchased this album on the strength of More... Best Worship Songs Ever. I can honestly say that I have not been left disappointed with this offering. To some people, worship music is like church music - it can be dull and drab. However, this album lays that ghost to rest, with various lively pieces guaranteed to get you going. If you only buy one album, it is a toss-up between this album and its successor - if you buy two albums, it means you won't have to agonise over which one to buy. It will definitely be money well spent.
If you only buy one worship compilation, 16 Oct 2006
If you only buy one worship compilation then this has to be it. It has a fantastic selection of modern, meaningful and very uplifting worship songs by some of the top Christian artists: Matt Redman, Stuart Townend, Delirious? etc., and singing along to some of the tracks is its own prayer. This is fantastic value considering there are 3 CDs with 16, 17 and 16 tracks. Fab!
The best - and the worst - of modern Christian music, 27 Apr 2006
Although I am something of a traditionalist with a soft spot for the 'old' hymns that Christians have sung for generations, these three CDs have given me a new taste for worship music with a modern flavour. They contain a variety of music - old, much-loved lyrics set to inspiring new melodies, such as 'Be Still'; totally original compositions ('Here I Am to Worship'); songs to dance around the room to (See What a Morning); and songs to play quietly as you are drifting off to sleep (Colours of Day).
Unfortunately, Christian music producers don't seem to be very good at filtering enthusiastic Christians who have the talent to express their faith through music from equally enthusiastic Christians who certainly have the DESIRE to express their faith through music, but lack the talent for it. There are a few songs on here that are absolutely awful in terms of their musical value. But don't let that deter you. Overall the album is a fabulous choice, as it offers such a good variety of music and is excellent value for money.

Great music with awesome lyrics, 26 Oct 2008
This CD suprised me with it's contemprora lyrics and music. Especially I liked Jesus Messiah, God of this city and God Almigty. Four stars because the album has a bit too many similar songs.
Perfect traditional Christmas, 19 May 2008
This is a collection of traditional Christmas carols and music from two of today's most respected choirs - The Choir of Trinity College Cambridge, and The Sixteen. These performances are subtle and restrained ones from a quiet chapel rather than a Songs of Praise edition from Westminster Abbey, so they are perfect for a quiet sit-down on Christmas Eve or calming Christmas Day morning reflection on life before the work begins.
Christmas CDs are in abundance, but this one offers some lovely traditional versions of songs as they were intended to be heard.
The others in the `Classic FM For' series are albums dedicated to Babies, Dinner Parties, Driving, Fitness, Mums, Romance, Studying, Weddings, so it will also appeal to those wanting to get the entire collection and build a modest library of varied classical music.
Enjoyable For The Festive Season, 21 Dec 2006
Brilliant stuff to put on for Christmas. I was however unbelievably dissapointed when I found myself struggling to hear the carols. Not the best buy I've made, and some of the carols are very clear and good to listen to, I found that several of the carols were drounded out by the music (still good, but I bought this for the carols). Nice to listen to, now I've got it I'm not annoyed, but had I have heard this before I probably would've had second thoughts before purchasing it, still, it didn't cost much, and none of the tracks are horrible to listen to, they are all nice, just not quite what I hoped for
Not the best I'm afraid, 05 Dec 2006
I was looking forward to this one but I'm afraid (despite the time of year) I can't be too charitable about it. Carol's are all about voices and I'm afraid the quality of the voices on the recordings are just not up to scratch. It's like they recorded at the back a big echoing hall with the microphone in a goldfish bowl. A lot of the time the lyrics are a next to inaudible mush and frequently sung in such a low key and somber fashion as to render otherwise cheerful and uplifting carols into elevator music.
The poor soloists are given little chance to shine either with their voices almost inaudible compared to the woolly wall of sound that accompanies them.
Christmas carols should surely be sung with joy and celebration (it's for Christmas after all) and recorded with clarity to get the most from them.
I've given it two stars because at least there is a large selection on the disc - I'm afraid I didn't think most of them were up to much though.
Well there's my tuppence worth - there's plenty of other Christmas compilations out there. Happy listening. (or if you can't be happy have a listen to the Alfie Boe CD - bring a tear to a glass eye 5/5).

Product Description
In an introduction to this disc of Christmas music, John Rutter tellingly commends the Christmas carol as one of the few forms that permits "serious" composers to write tunes, regardless of whatever political correctness rules the avant-garde of the day. And he's been exploiting that licence with a vengeance ever since, as a Cambridge student, he composed the jaunty little number that remains his greatest hit--"The Shepherd's Pipe Carol". Needless to say it's on this disc, along with the good, bad and indifferent of his Christmas output through the past 40 years, immaculately sung by one of the most accomplished professional choirs in the business under its superlatively accomplished founder-director Stephen Layton. And I defy anyone inclined to marginalise Rutter as middlebrow not to be touched by the eloquence, charm and craft of his work when it's done like this, in ideal conditions. At its worst the music is derivative but fun. At best it's irresistibly endearing. Not for nothing does he rival Howard Blake as English music's Mr Christmas, and this seasonally timed release delivers the evidence encyclopaedically--it's a perfect stocking-filler. --Michael White

JOYMARNew Dawn Out of this world, 22 Mar 2008
A treasure trove for adults and children alike. This is what Christmas is about! THIS IS A STUNNINGLY GOOD CD!, 27 Aug 2008
This beautiful CD follows a similar trajectory to the treatment of 'Psalm 23' by Howard Goodall (the Vicar Of Dibley theme) and re-invents the tradition of church music. John Rutter is an English genius who can rightly follow in the hallowed footsteps of greats like Ralph Vaughn Williams and John Ireland. These composers know how to make music that is warm, strangely familiar and above all human, without 'arty' pretensions or ideals, this kind music can speak to everyone on a basic level. Old and Young alike.
Peerless performances from the choir and immaculate orchestral arrangements make this one of the most value for money recordings you'll buy, i also guarantee you will not be able to stop playing this music.
Listen to 'What Sweeter Music' 'The Very Best Time Of The Year' 'Love Came Down At Christmas' 'Mary's Lullaby' 'Candlelight Carol' and you will be profoundly moved.
If you want something that will soothe your soul and warm your heart, forget Christmas music, this is purely timeless music that can be enjoyed whatever time of year.
Go on, treat yourself. And find that there is a treasure trove of English music waiting to be discovered.
Take a quick look at the Hyperion (the classical music CD label) website where you can listen to a preview of this gem of a recording. What a christmas feast, 26 Jan 2006
A magical recording of some of the most beautiful Christmas music I have ever heard. Polyphony perform with their usual wonderful tone and clarity under the expert hand of Stephen Layton. The selection is wide, on the one hand you have the reflective and ever popular "what sweeter music" and a beautiful piece entitled "Love came down at Christmas" mixed with the bouncy "Donkey carol" and the lovely "star carol" The recording is of a high quality and the choir and the City of London Sinfonia balance out beautifully. A real Christmas treat and a must for any collection. Glorious, Heavenly Music if you buy nothing else ever, 24 Dec 2002
I first heard John Rutter's work (Parkinson Radio 2 on a Sunday morning last Christmas). I was absolutely knocked for six by The Shepherd's Pipe Carol, however I failed to get the title. This year I managed to get the title from Desmond Carrington who also played it on Radio 2. I am a broken down old jazzer who normally only listens to Big Band and Mainstream Jazz, together with the popular classic composers like Vivaldi, Bach, Handel etc. On hearing the first track I was moved to tears by this glorious music. The rest of the disk only re-inforced my asessment. The Angel Carol is possbly the most beautiful orchestration I have ever heard. I just can't get the melody out of my head. John Rutter please continue I would also like to hear if you have ever written for a big band. Mike Hart Outstanding collection of John Rutter's Christmas music, 18 Dec 2001
Even if you are not overly keen on Rutter's Christmas settings, this disc is simply irresistible. Speaking as a keen chorister myself, the singing simply takes my breath away. Added to sensitive direction from Stephen Layton, magical orchestrations and excellent recording from Hyperion this is a must-have and will make a wonderful Christmas gift. I heard one of the tracks on BBC Radio 3's Choirworks (02/dec/01)and realised I just had to buy it. This is the conductor and choir who took this year's Choral award in the Gramophone awards - I look forward to more recordings from this combination.
