Disappointed, 17 Nov 2008
I bought this CD mainly because I wanted 'about you now'. The track on the CD is nothing like the single and I feel it's a cynical attempt to make you buy the single as well. Very disappointed.

No Can do - Sounds like the Jackson 5 in places - Good

Sunday Rain - Classic Slow Anthem (Jazzy)
Every Heart Broken - A unwrapped story - gorgeous - a sure hit!
Beware - Dark - stays with you haunting!
Nothing as good as you - great
Sound of Goodbye - fab
Can we call a truce - Romantic slowy dance song - my Favourite
She's like a Star - Very Catchy!!
Hits the mark, 12 Nov 2008
I did not expect much from this album and of course it turns out to be really good, and one of the Sugababes' best. The songs are all well produced with sharp clear diction to really show off the girls' vocals. There is a nice contrast of tracks and I just love the breezy up-tempo songs that have a real feelgood feel. Very good album.
Not The Same Without Mutya., 09 Nov 2008
I am afraid i found this album to be another badly written offering from the Sugababes. I miss the super high quality songwriting that used to happen when Mutya was with them. I used to love he 'girl power' attitued and super charged melodies. That now for me has all but gone. The odd song they write is good, but on the whole it's pretty awful. Don't like some songs that are a 'throw back' to the sixties. Bring back the modern up-tempo and inspirational music that has been void since 'Taller In More Ways'. Very very disappointing. :(

Product Description
Nineteen years between albums is the sort of gap usually reserved for in-it-for-the-money reunions, but Hurricane--Grace Jones’ first album since 1989's Bulletproof Heart--suggests an artist who hasn't lost one shred of her disco nous or imperious command. Recorded with a string of collaborators including Brian Eno, Tricky, Tony Allen, and Wendy And Lisa of Prince's band The Revolution, Hurricane occupies territory somewhere between the taut reggae of Jones' early '80s output and the gloomy dub-rock of Massive Attack's Mezzanine. The latter influence is particularly prime on “Corporate Cannibal", a fiercely modern-sounding slab of gnarled guitar and horror-flick synth that finds Jones playing the role of a hungry acquisitions manager that actually eats her prey: “I consume my consumers/With no sense of humour", she looms, deliciously; “Hurricane", meanwhile, pairs her up with Tricky, whose husky whisper is all but subsumed in shrill classical strings. Elsewhere, though, there is warmth and history: Jones pays tribute to her mother's side of the family on “I'm Crying (Mother's Tears)" and “Williams Blood", which builds from a reggae strut to a gospel chorus that's dramatic as a thunderclap. A commendable return. –-Louis Pattison

A phenomenal return to the music scene, 16 Nov 2008
What can be said? Grace Jones always has been an individual in a sea of normality. This album, like the track 'Hurricane' pretty much blows everything away. Retaining the reggae beats, care of Sly & Dunbar, but with a much harder edge tracks such as 'Corporate Cannibal' are like a rhythmic sledge hammer through a plate glass window. There aren't any hugely strong songs here but if you are a fan of Grace Jones and her individual style then this was worth the long wait.
love it!, 15 Nov 2008
im only 19 so i wasnt around when grace was big the first time but id heard some of her classics like pull up to the bumper.
i saw her on jonathan ross and the video for corporate cannibal was amazing so i bought the album as soon as it came out and wasnt dissapointed.
its a mix of reggae, alternative and soul vibes and there isnt one bad song so i advise you all to buy this album a.s.a.p! :)
Stunning!, 14 Nov 2008
I am pretty much new to Grace Jones. I remember the hits she had in the eighties, but this is the first album I have bought, so I wasn't really sure of what to expect. I'm pleased to report that it is terrific, and sounds fresh, modern and well produced. You can hear the influence of the likes of Tricky in this album, with it's thumping rhythms and superb production, although all the while it sounds unmistakably Grace Jones, with her chracteristic vocals and her man-munching edge so chracteristic of her music. I haven't bought an album as good as this for a very long time - it is stunning!
Excellent..., 10 Nov 2008
As a lover of all things Grace did with the Compass Point All Stars, I love this record.
The songs are good, so is the musicianship and the production - and Grace is on great form vocally.
I give it **** not ***** because it is slightly stretched out in places, perhaps due to lack of material. The remix of Corporate Cannibal isn't great, and the whole things needs 3 or 4 more track to takke it to 60 minutes.
otherwise excellent!
Simply the BEST Album of 2008 & of Miss Grace Jones' Career!, 10 Nov 2008
It has been a worthwhile wait of NINTEEN years to receive Miss Grace Jones' Hurricane. Not one dud on the album. All tracks are excellently produced, and all easily transferable to the live stage if Miss Jones' stellar performance on Later with Jools is anything to go by! She has indeed improved with age.

Product Description
The story of Swedish producer/DJ Jonas Erik Altberg's--a.k.a Basshunter--rise to fame makes for some compelling reading. He started out making tunes on basic equipment in his bedroom and putting them out via the Internet. After releasing his debut album through his home page, he watched it chart all over Europe. Altberg then managed to get into the Dutch Top 40 with a single ("Boten Anna"), quickly became in demand as a producer and DJ and eventually inked a deal with major label Warners. Now You're Gone is his third album and features all the Basshunter trademarks: repetitive bleeps and beats, euphoric vocals and surging choruses. The record pummels away at the cerebellum with a relentless flow of unchanging beats, formulaic builds/drops and tacky covers such as KC and The Sunshine Band's "Please Don't Go". After a couple of tracks the album seems to blur into one long Basshunter anthem. The dearth of ideas and lack of diversity may render it a little too one-dimensional for many dance music fans, but devotees of euro-dance and fans of Altberg's previous material will find it's thudding power hopelessly exhilarating. --Danny McKenna

Awesome!, 17 Jul 2008
I love this album!
I bought this album for 'now you're gone' and it's probably the track i have listened to least, all tracks are so bouncy and just great.
Awesome but prefer when they were sing in swedish :D, 16 Jul 2008
Bought this from my local asda store this afternoon for £1 more than it is on here and i think that it is an awesome album to own if you are in to dance or the orginal swedish songs which in my opinion sounded better, even though i don't know what they are on about.
I glad that for the last couple of songs on the CD, they have put bota anna (now you're gone) and dota (All i ever wanted), this is a fab bonus feature for the cd.
If you like this CD, why don't you go and search for the swedish basshunter album -----> "LOL <(^^,)>" i know the title is weird but the songs sound awesome in swedish.
I give this album in the 'Gadget Show' way, 5 G's or for the amazon review 10/10

So so good, Ministry deliver once again, puts me in a brilliant mood every time i wack it on! Loads of instant classics on here and every so often a nice fat slice of pop(you know you love a bit of basshunter really!)
Stop hatin' and start dancing!
Great album, 17 Nov 2008
I collect a lot of dance albums, and for me MoS' Annuals do exactly what they're supposed to. If you think of hit dance track from the last year you can be sure it's on there, and it'll also open your eyes to a few that you may have missed. Man With The Red Face and Infinity 08 are set to be all time classics, Get Down Again always puts a smile on my face, Singin' In The Rain, I could go on and on.. Great album.
Wicked, 17 Nov 2008
It annoys me when people slag off an album for having popular tunes or "too many vocals"! For those people: go and sit and sit in a dark room with nothing but a kick drum and bleeping noise then..
Ever since I put this album on my iPod it's all I've had on, it's awesome. There's only one track I skip, which out of 40's not bad. There are commercial tunes on there, but for most people that's a good thing.
this album is great, 17 Nov 2008
This album is brilliant. All the important dance tracks are on it, it really is a yearbook of dance. Standout tracks come from Robyn, Eric Prydz, Herve, Sash plus it's got that ace track from Guru Josh. Love it!!!!
A great album!, 17 Nov 2008
Top album with a great selection of classics. I'm not quite sure what the 1 star reviews are talking about, can they not read the tracklisting on the back on the cd!?

Product Description
Seventh Tree unveils an Alison Goldfrapp quite different to the one we saw on her career highpoint to date, 2005's Supernature. Whereas that album was grandiose, glammy, and almost aggressive in its brash, thrusting sexuality, Goldfrapp's fourth album is no less sensual, but rather more subtle in its approach. Recorded with longtime collaborator Will Gregory out in rural Somerset, Seventh Tree feels like an attempt to fuse the pagan folk of cult English horror classic The Wicker Man to a lush backdrop of woozy electronics and a restrained orchestral sweep reminiscent of '70s-era Serge Gainsbourg. In practise, this means much of Seventh Tree goes where earlier Gainsbourg disciples such as Air have gone before: chilled-out, soporific electronica with a light organic edge. Luckily, Goldfrapp remains a compelling enough figure to keep matters on the right side of ethereal: the gorgeous "Clowns" imagines the Cocteau Twins' Liz Fraser guesting on some long-forgotten Nick Drake out-take, rustic folk with an all-but-indecipherable vocal and an undercurrent of desolation, while "A&E" shows Goldfrapp's pop urge has not deserted her, uplifting electronica with a warm, bucolic twist. --Louis Pattison

A phenomenal return to the music scene, 16 Nov 2008

Back On Form, 11 Nov 2008
If, like me, you're one of those people who was blown away by Felt Mountain but disappointed by what came after then Seventh Tree may give you cause to rejoice.
Although a very different beast to FM this album shares the same quirky, sensual and exotic oddness as Goldfrapp's remarkable debut. The main difference between the two is mood - FM was frequently quite dark (and in the case of Deer Stop, downright creepy) but Seventh Tree is a long summer's day to Felt Moutain's eerie twilight.
Goldfrapp obviously don't mind annoying their fans - having thoroughly cheesed-off many Felt Moutain lovers (including me) by going off in a wildly differnt direction for their next two albums they've now annoyed some of the fans of those albums by abandoning the dance-orientated electronica in favour of something altogether more subtle and bewitching. Heaven knows where they'll go next.
5 stars for 'Cologne Cerrone Houdini' alone....., 20 Oct 2008
I seem to have been lost in Goldfrapp land for the last few months!
I couldn't seem to stop playing the live version of 'Strict Machine at Glastonbury' on YouTube along with 'Train' and others....then I downloaded this.
Don't worry, I read all the reviews on Amazon first and I think the considered opinion on here is correct. Which is, no it is nothing like 'Black Cherry'. It is very subtle and growing. There is none of Alison the cool as fuck disco diva, (which like I say, I'm a fan of). But this is very cool in a very different way. As she sings in 'Road To Somewhere':
'bring it on, come along, on the road to somewhere...take our time, see the sights, on the road to somewhere...'
When Alison Goldfrapp invites you to chill with her on a blissful drive, how can you NOT go along for the ride?
I have to say right now, 'Cologne Cerrone Houdini' will definitely be one of the most beautiful songs you'll ever hear, so that gets 5 stars alone. The singing on single 'A&E' is a good marker for the feel of the rest of the album. And when she sings 'we're here to welcome you...' on other singe 'Happiness', I can't stop myself singing it with her! Her synthesized voice is utterly unique.
The decade of partying on borrowed money is over and this album is perfect for the national come-down. It is genius.
P.S. KD Lang's 'Watershed' which has recently been released as well goes together with 'Seventh Tree' like a cup of tea and Digestive Biccy's! Perfection.
David Lo Pan, 06 Oct 2008
Ok for people that know the film Big Trouble in Little China would you agree that Goldfrapp are a lot like David Lo Pan. Let me explain - one part of them is interesting music and is quite orchestral and the other half is this rubbish glam disco. So basically two different sides.
So for the people that enjoyed Felt Mountain this album is very similar. Quite orchestral in the construction but they have took influence from their dabble in electronic. The result is quite spectacular.
So for a musical intellect it is definitely worth an inspection. For the less intellectual that crave electro pop then go elsewhere.
Astounding, 28 Aug 2008
This is why, when captive on an aeroplane, you should listen/watch different stuff. This is the most compelling new album I've heard for a while - keep listening to it, and discovering new depths. It's clever, simultaneously retro and bang up to date, and quite fascinating. Remarkable.
Sumptuous, 07 Jul 2008
Yes, of course, most album reviews on Amazon are positive, and much of the rest are from people crying 'sell out'.
Well, for what 42 years on the planet and a first ever Amazon review are worth, this is one of those very very rare albums that takes music to a new level, that even on first listening you know will live on, not necessarily defining an era, but being forever known and rediscovered. It's that good.
With the possible exception of 'Caravan Girls', nothing on this album is weak or forced - it experiments, disturbs and delights whilst at all times demonstrating an utter mastery of the craft of beautiful song writing. And underneath all of that, there remains the slightly disturbed aura of Felt Mountain that led to it being the soundtrack to the magnificent 'Monkey Dust'.
Amazon is full of supposedly 'must have' albums; this is a real one.

Product Description
For a few years now Brooklyn's TV on the Radio's obtuse but powerful art-rock has been consistently acclaimed by critics and peers without quite entering mainstream consciousness, a state of affairs the release of Dear Science is about to change for good. On their third studio set, their best and most cohesive album to date, the five mad scientists that make up TVOTR (no exaggeration--the sleeve photo captures them in a laboratory looking very serious) have managed to marry their love for the sonically indulgent to some seriously impressive songwriting. The results are always convincing and occasionally stunning. Sometime actor Tunde Adebimpe's yearning voice at times evokes eighties icons from Prince to Peter Gabriel while David Sitek, the band member behind the board, enhances his reputation as a producer, placing detailed strings and horn arrangements alongside the most unearthly and inorganic sounds. Brilliant single "Golden Age" sounds like an imaginary collaboration of David Bowie and Michael Jackson, the lovely "Family Tree" is a ballad beamed from the future while the furious, fascinating "Dancing Choose" is a hit in waiting. Ranging from the funky ("Red Dress") to the frantic ("Shout Me Out"), and even revisiting their admitted penchant for, er, barbershop harmonies (the heroic "Halfway House"). Dear Science is one of the albums of the year. --Steve Jelbert

TV On The Radio enter their Golden Age, 15 Nov 2008
This deliciously packaged fourth album from the fantastic TV On The Radio is a real gem. Following on from their 2006 album Return to Cookie Mountain, the album has a distinctly different feel. Where RtCM played with expansive sounds and interesting rhythms, `Dear Science' has a more refined and cleaner sound. Don't worry, their delightful percussion is still there, just less pronounced, making room for a large use of sax and brass, and as such the tracks on Dear Science have a fuller sound when compared to their previous album.
I was already slightly familiar with 'Golden Age' having heard it on the radio a few times, and I'd heard Family Tree once, but these songs are only the tip of the iceberg when you listen to the whole album. It begins with the fantastic 'Halfway Home', a merciless onslaught of foot-tapping beats and beautiful vocals, the highlight being the chorus, where you just can't help but sing out "Is it not me? Am I not folded by your touch?" as high as you can, in a pathetic attempt to match Adebimpe's range. Other highlights on the record include the soothing 'Stork & Owl', 'Love Dog' and of course the beautiful 'Family Tree' with its echoing piano chords, haunting vocals and slow march towards a climatic finish where the percussion comes in and the string section expands. The last three tracks of the album are all fantastic in their own way; 'Shout Me Out' with its transformation from ethereal beginnings to a fast paced finish; 'DLZ' and its gritty sound with the catchy line "This is beginning to feel like the dawn of the luz of forever"(what is a luz?); and of course 'Lover's Day' makes a fantastic finish to the album, with its sensual saxophone and flute arrangement at the end.
A wonderfully styled insert contains the lyrics, presented in a completely original fashion (in my experience at least), and pulls the whole thing together to make this an extremely worthy purchase. Having seen them perform a few years ago after the release of RtCM, I eagerly await their show on the 17th November at the Manchester Academy. Can they pull it off live? Of course they can.
Hmmmmmmmm...., 05 Nov 2008
Not convinced about this album - sure, it has some great melodies but the music sounds like it was all created on a PC, and some singing sounds disturbingly similar to Coldplay. Their performance on Later...was a lot more organic (and enjoyable)
Does,nt blind with science but with brilliance, 19 Oct 2008
Buying TV On The Radio's new album was a dichotomous experience. On the one hand I ,was , like any right thinking person, looking forward to hearing it immensely after loving their last albumReturn to Cookie Mountain. Yet I was also girding myself for what could have been a major disappointment . How could they top their last album? Hell....I'd have settled for them coming somewhere near .Yet , having heard Dear Science , I am now aware I should have had more faith for not only is not a let down it is in actuality even better than RTCM.
While their previous album was an intoxicating aural mixture of propulsive linear rock grooves, autumnal jazz tones, scuffed up funk and pop, though it's pop filtered through several gauzy layers of dissonance Dear Science is an altogether punchier brighter sounding album with pristine production by David Sitek. You could say it is more commercial with more melodic and harmonious layers yet the band mange to do this without sacrificing any of the sonic depth and gradated nuances of the music. There still more textures than a textile convention , more moods than a double booked hen -party.
Co-vocalists Kyp Malone and Tunde Abipimpe utilise their background in visual arts and production to produce music that is as multi layered as a UFO sized snowflake. Magnificent album opener "Halfway Home" is a gorgeous pop song hugged with heavy reverb and jostling guitars . It would be understandable if the band had taken this approach for every song but TV On The Radio are far too interested in starting a self conscious insurrection for that to happen.
"Family Tree" is the most straight up beautiful track on here - a truly majestic ballad that merges a forlorn acceptance of forbidden love with something approaching elegiac rapture. The band do this sort of thing a lout on Dear Science. "Red Dress" is as twitchily addictive as Talking Heads circa "Remain in Light" but berates sedentary society. "They got you tamed/ they got me tamed. "."Shout Me Out" most recalls their former album but fuses a halfway reggae strut with a silver foil slashing guitar wig out. "Crying " wraps syncopated handclaps and percussion over falsetto soul and wiry guitar motifs ."Dancing Choose" has "Broken dreams and alibi's" over purring keyboards and atonal brass. The stately tip toe arrangement and mellow strings of "Stork And Owl" jar against the preening funk chords and woozy off kilter chorus of the exquisite "Golden Age" .
TV On The Radio rather like Elbow are a modern band who are not just interested in writing good songs but in doing something different with them. Not for them the shameless plundering of rock/pop/ whatever history . Or if they do plunder the past they subvert it and transform it into something else or merge it with something contradictory like on "Love Dog" which is a torch ballad transmuted into a bold unification between Tricky and The Tindersticks. Lyrically Dear Science is pretty bleak , musically it infuses the listener in a billowing cloud of rapture. Another dichotomous experience, another truly great album by one of the best bands around. How could I have doubted them?
Scientific Marvel, 14 Oct 2008
When you open the inner sleeve to `Dear Science' you are presented with a picture of the band standing moodily in a science lab. I had to stifle a laugh - `these guys are making it too easy for me'. What a serious business this sonic experimentation must be - after all, the entire chin stroking indie intelligencia are waiting outside the lab with hungry ears! `Return to Cookie Mountain' sounded like it had been cooked up in a lab - it was like a well constructed chemistry experiment that was just missing the spark, the catalyst. By no means a bad album but something was undeniably missing.
So I started sharpening my surgical implements ready to take this thing to pieces.
Now this is curious. The patient jumped off the table, shook my hand and started swinging me round by the arms. TV on the Radio have found the missing ingredient. This album is alive. They have addressed everything that was wrong about `Cookie Mountain'. The vocals are varied and Tunde takes risks - great big ones. The inclusion of flute, horns, sax and various other instruments helps to create a warm, inviting sound. There is personality in abundance. The quality of material is strong throughout although if forced to pick favorites I'd plump for `Family Tree', `Lover's Day' and the kinda ridiculous `DLZ'.
When the album finishes I crack a smile, sit back and think `I really didn't need to stifle that laugh at all'. Join the party.

Product Description
In Silico might be the second album from Pendulum, but it's their first as a fully-fledged rock band. Of course, this Australian dance collective have paddled in these waters before: their debut album Hold Your Colour was a muscular collection of hard drum'n'bass and slamming breakbeats that, for all its synthetic construction, displayed firmly rock sensibilities. On In Silico, though, hard-riffing guitars are pulled right up in the mix, and the band's production core, Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen, lead from the front, reaching for the microphone and making clattering loops the bedrock for a suite of anthemic rockers. Comparisons to the likes of Enter Shikari and The Prodigy are not too wide of the mark, capturing something of Pendulum's fairground waltzer adrenaline and polished, metallic aggression. Beyond straightforward rush, though, some interesting ingredients find their way into the brew: storming opener "Slowdown" imagines an unholy synthesis of DJ Hype and Muse in full progressive rock-out mode, while the elegiac "Propane Nightmares" commences with a Mariachi trumpet serenade. Dance connoisseurs will probably complain Pendulum's beats lack a certain finesse, but if you like your dance music a) fast and b) hard then In Silico has all bases covered. --Louis Pattison

A phenomenal return to the music scene, 16 Nov 2008
Truly Top Class, 16 Nov 2008

Not the "crossover" everyone makes it out to be, 03 Nov 2008
Firstly, maybe I should explain where I'm coming from in writing this review. I'm a true junglist and an avid Pendulum fan, I have been since I first heard "Spiral" all those years ago. I watched them make 2 years of great records before they finally dropped "Hold Your Colour" in our laps. Needless to say it was sensational. I love every single track on that album and it remains today one of my all-time favourites. So when I caught word of a new Pendulum LP in the making, I immediately had high hopes for another DnB stormer.
By the time I reached "The Tempest" I was almost in tears. It was, to me, like finding out a band I loved had split up. Pendulum are dead. This album is just an awful attempt, by a band I don't even know anymore, at blending 2 or 3 different genres together into ten tracks of failure. I'm listening to "9000 Miles" and trying to describe the dismal hybrid-wannabe drivel resonating from my speakers right now is.. well, it's indescribable. Writing this is reminding me of the loss of one of my favourite artists all over again, it hurts! :(
Backing up my criticism a little; the vocals are WAY too FX-heavy. Generally this is used to overcompensate for talentless vocalists - yes, I am suggesting something here. Also, this album is regularly used by wannabe DnB fans who are trying to "me too" their way into a music scene they perceive to be cool. This ISN'T DnB. Not by a long stretch. This is a mediocre rock/electronica mix with a breakbeat rhythm. That's also one of the reasons I felt the need to write a critical review. The amount of people putting this rubbish under the DnB umbrella is really starting to annoy me.
Why have I given it two stars when I hate it so much? Simply because I believe that all music has intrinsic value. I don't think any song can simply be labelled "bad" because someone, somewhere will like it and to them it isn't "bad" at all. The fact of the matter is that the pop/chart-loving crowd will lap this up. And if you accept it for what it is, it becomes an average-fare pop album. It's just that I'm having a hard time accepting this for what it is because I expected so much more from the guys that brought me the best album of 2005. Peo | | |
