O no!, 14 Dec 2008
I was all set to buy this CD but on reading the reviews and realising Wham or Mariah Carey aren't amongst the tracks; no can do! Have to add that the thought of having to listen to cover versions by unknowns is off putting too - Missed opportunity.
dissapointing, 30 Nov 2008
I kind of trusted on the reviews.Ok there are some great songs on it,the classic but also a lot of rubbish.A great number of songs (even some famous ones) sound like they were recorded with electronic music.
I'm going to look for a cd with maybe less songs but more quality.

With The Now series you know what you are going to get, a collection of great and not so great pop tunes which have graced the charts. Now XMAS is a collection 61 tunes which have done exactly that in this case the christmas charts for the last 45 years. Can you have a favourite yes, are you going to like everything probably not but pop fans can buy knowing that this is going to offer variety and top 10 ten tunes for every occasion.
it will do for now, 11 Nov 2008
the best Xmas cd on the market at present - but not as good as the red cover Best Christmas Album in the World Ever which came out in 1995ish. To be fair this one has virtually everything but misses several key tracks - Shakin Steven's Merry Christmas Everyone, The Pretenders 2000 Mile and the Wham version of Last Christmas. It would be in bad taste for me to complain that theres no Rock and Roll Christmas by Gary Glitter but there you go. Other than these exceptions it has everything.

i think that sony bmg should grow up and let mariah carey and wham onto this album instead of trying to make us buy christmas hits. shame on you sony bmg for ruining the best xmas album!

Product Description
On Employment, raffish, trilby-clad young Leeds quintet Kaiser Chiefs prove themselves the logical heirs to the Britpop throne previously warmed by the likes of Blur and Supergrass, twinning expectant verses with rollicking choruses and generally acting very much like indie-rock's latest swaggering young Jack the Lads. There's no doubt, the Kaisers know their rock history: "Oh My God" and "Every Day I Love You Less and Less" barrel along with something of Madness' playful charm, while "You Can Have It All" and the lush "Caroline, Yes" appear to be conscious nods to the sleepy, harmony-laden Californian pop vision of Brian Wilson. The lyrics of frontman Ricky Wilson, however, are rooted in a very English sensibility--one often traditional and occasionally, bizarrely archaic: "Walking through town is quite scary/ It's not very pretty, I tell thee," he gasps on adrenaline-fuelled urban nightmare "I Predict A Riot". It's the sort of pleasingly unusual idiosyncrasy that sees Employment stand out from the fashionable indie pack, and assuming the Chiefs can continue to keep their foibles the right side of irksome, any attitude is thoroughly justified. --Louis Pattison

Best Debue ever, 4 indie rock, 04 Sep 2008
i bought this album after i heard 'i predict a riot'. every song is great, and the lyrics. GREAT sound 4 a debue even. i thought this would be crap , but it's in my top 10 albums of all time now. the album opens with 'everyday i love u less and less' which is one of my favorite tracks of the album. i always listen to my albums either when i'm doing work or in the car and this album worked. If you like the kaiser chiefs or this album u will also like: Franz Ferdinand, Kasabian, the gossip and maybe oasis. check out these bands , their worth checking out. the gossip sounds more like 'take my temp' and 'i predict a riot'. But overall if ur a fan of the kaiser chiefs check out these band (deffo). any way GOOD ALBUM GET IT.
They're a comedy band, right?, 13 Jul 2008
A quite dreadful album from a truly awful mob. They're a comedy band, right? This album sounds like a Weird Al Yankovic tribute to Franz Ferdinand covering XTC. The fact that there are 108 used & new copies available (at the time of writing) on Amazon Marketplace does suggest that this album does not endure. I saw them about a year ago following a Rufus Wainwright performance on a TV show. The gulf in the quality of music and style (style isn't everything, but it counts for something) was staggering. Avoid.

"Excellent debut album ! favourite tracks...Everyday I Love You Less and Less,I Predict A Riot,Modern Way,You Can Have It All"
A bit Blur-lite, 22 Aug 2007
Watching the TV coverage of the Glastonbury Festival in 2005, Kaiser Chiefs seemed to be on all the time. I'm not sure how you get your band to be featured but whatever was done, it certainly worked as Employment ended the year as one of the biggest selling albums. But is it any good?
Yes it is good though, to my ears, an inferior more poppy version of Blur circa Park Life without there being a musician as capable of adding something memorable or distinctive to the more average songs as Graham Coxon frequently did for the Essex four-piece. Indeed, you can imagine Blur writing and performing most of the songs on Employment which, not surprisingly, shares in Stephen Street the same producer as Park Life.
Having said this, there are some very good songs on Employment such as the exciting opener Everyday I Love You Less And Less and I Predict A Riot with its clever, caustic description of the sort of activities which go on in most town centres every Saturday night. Other highlights include Na Na Na Na Naa with its wiggy guitar solo and the pleasing melody and sentiment behind You Can Have It All. The equivalent song to Badhead perhaps...
Employment covers a number of styles though, once again, these are similar forms to those covered by a certain other band. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh as it is a good album, albeit an over-rated one, though hopefully subsequent Kaiser Chief releases will have influences deriving from more than one act.
Great, 06 Aug 2007
Sorry for the boring title but its all I can think of at the moment. I personally think that Employment is great.

Great Band.....Good Selection For The Beginner, 05 Dec 2008
I am a convert from 'Closer'....so decided to buy the album of the same name, great songs lead me to buy this album, after some research went for 'substance'...now i cannot stop playing them.
After looking on Amazon for more JD cd's saw the new release of 'Heart and soul'...a 4 cd boxed set for less than £18.00 with 81 tracks on could not be turned down.
Addicted to this Album, 26 Sep 2008
This album features the greatest song ever written or recorded "LOVE WILL TEAR US APART` - The rest of the songs are OK - but `Love Will Tear Us Apart` is a timeless classic, a work of art that I play about 30 times every day...it is playing now as I write this.
The vocal performance of the late great Ian Curtis is pure pop pefection...I want this song played at my funeral along with "Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O`Connor and "My Death" by DAVID BOWIE.
Those three songs are better than any tonic, more moving then any hymn or national anthem and give more of a buzz than any drug.
If you dont like Joy Division or New Order - still BUY this album because "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is a reason for living...
Romeo & Juliet Soundtrack for Punk Rockers, 12 Sep 2008
One of the best bands of all-time produced the greatest love song of all-time...
Love Will Tear Us Apart is to punk what Lets Get It On is to soul...
Very good value for money and a great band, 23 May 2008
First things first, there are already two Joy Division compilations out there, Substance which personally i think omits too many essential JD tracks, and Permanent which i think is a great introduction to the band but scandalously leaves out "Digital".
Well this album has "Digital" and most of the songs a casual listener would want but it is worth noting that two key tracks "She's Lost Control" and the timeless classic "Love Will Tear Us Apart" appear on here in the less familar alternative versions which are longer but less catchy (to my ears at least!).
A big selling point is the extra cd containing two complete Peel Sessions, each of 4 tracks, plus 2 songs recorded for Something Else and an interview with Ian Curtis and Stephen Morris.
I own both this and Permanent and i think both are worthy of a place in anyone's cd collection, well anyone who likes genuinely alternative music.
I'd have given this 5 stars if it had the better known versions of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "She's Lost Control" on it.
A wasted opportunity...., 06 May 2008
OK - let's get something out of the way. Joy Division where thee greatest post-punk bands ever. They released two of the best albums ever released by any band. The quality of their music is not under any doubt.
What is under some doubt is the format/point/track listing of this album. London Records have missed a trick here (or they just being cynical?). If it's a "Best of" then that is exactly what it should be. Not an excuse to flog us the Peel sessions (no matter how fine they are). But it isn't a "Best of". How can "Decades" not be included while the likes of "Incubation" is? Where are "The Eternal" and "Heart and Soul"? If fact there's just two tracks from the greatest album of all time?!!?? Less contentious, and more personal opinion, is the lack of much in the way of Still material, such as the very fine "The Only Mistake".
So we still haven't had a definitive "Best of Joy Division". I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, but London Records, shame on you, you have really missed an opportunity here.

Punk rocks owners, 29 Oct 2007
Whatever people tell me about the ramones: i always say that these guys defined punk music. Still today The Jam is a classic band that will always have a place in my album collection. This CD however is overdoing everything. Punk rock albums are usually very short and having to listen to 20 songs that do all sound extremely simmilar can get tedious. More than this I believe that punk bands very designed for live performances: they had a great attitude to live acts which made them amazing to listen to. The CD takes the heart out of this genre and for that i mark it down. Also there are a few songs could have done without.

Get SNAP SE instead, 10 Aug 2006
There's no doubt this is an excellent collection of singles but why buy this when you could buy the SNAP special edition double CD £1 cheaper. That has every song on this "best of" CD plus another 8 including "Away from the numbers" and "English Rose".
Great Singles Act, 26 Mar 2006
This is basically a singles album; not that the Jam didn't produce some excellent albums but if you're a casual or new fan this is probably the one to go for. Most of these songs are great, full of energy and sound as good as they did when the band was kicking, between 1977 and 1982. Personal favourites are When You're Young, Precious, Eton Rifles, A Bomb In Wardour Street and the underated News Of The World, a rare Foxton outing. Paul, mate, you never bettered what you did in this band, then again, few did.

Product Description
If your previous album was a slow-burning success story, it can be hard to be expected to hit the ground running on the follow-up. Fortunately, the Kaiser Chiefs have done just that on the fantastically-titled Yours Truly, Angry Mob. Like Employment, their debut and this album's predecessor, Yours Truly... is full of radio-friendly, hook-ridden tunes that mask cunningly subversive lyrics. The Kaiser Chiefs are very much a Britpop band, which is probably why "Highroyds" opening couplet--"I remember nights out when we were young/ They weren't very good they were rubbish"--sounds like something Jarvis Cocker would sing, while being backed by the boys from Blur. And it's this lyrical sentiment that's carried throughout the album, much of which is satire wrapped up in potential singles. Best of all, and a perfect example of this, is "The Angry Mob", sure to be shouted along to by exactly the people it's targeting. It's the rare band that can mock and judge its audience and still be loved by them, but that's exactly what the Kaiser Chiefs have done on Yours Truly, Angry Mob. --Ted Kord

Dreadful, 18 Nov 2008

A Disappointment, 19 May 2008
I'm not gonna lie - I thought Employment was an utterly brilliant record. It made me quite obsessed with the chiefs that yeah and is still in my Top 20 all time favourite albums which is saying something.
So you can imagine how heartbroken I was when I finally heard this. Yes, it's good but nothing special at all, certainly not in the way the first one was. I was so excited for the record I downloaded bad quality live rips off the internet and loved what I was hearing - a more serious direction with still some great music. But unfortunatley Lightning never strikes in the same place twice and Stephen Street turned those brilliant tunes into something quite bland.
With Employment I listened to a track off it pretty much every day for a year, with YTAM I listened to it a number of times when it was first released and then put it on the shelf. I haven't listened to it in ages.
The cover is beige. There's a song called "Everything is Average Nowadays". Oh the irony. The video for the title track - The Angry Mob, is appauling. They're working with one of the most evil men in music Mark Ronson for LP3. Unfortunatley, the same band who did Employment have now totally lost me.
Best songs on the album are - Thank You Very Much, Love's Not A Competition and lead single Ruby.
B-sides are among the bands best work but thier few in number - but whenever you get the chance grab a listen of Admire You or Out Of My Depth, two brilliant songs. Unfortunatley, leaving the songs on the record would've given the album a little flavour and we dont want that.
Hits and Miss, 12 Mar 2008
Most people will have heard "Ruby" and "The Angry Mob", and both deserve to be successful singles, being both anthemic and sophisticated.
Unfortunately the rest of the album, while not bad, is fairly derivative, and inspiration is rather sparse. Many of the tracks could easily be mistaken for Blur, with a touch of the Jam and the Coral thrown in. However, these would, without exception, be album fillers for those bands.
All-in-all not too bad, but certainly not great.
Can I send it back????, 23 Feb 2008

the best Xmas cd on the market at present - but not as good as the red cover Best Christmas Album in the World Ever which came out in 1995ish. Sheer Brilliance!, 09 Jul 2008
This was the first CD from Blondie I bought at HMV and i'm certainly not sorry that I did.
"Greatest Hits" really is a superb collection with many brilliant house-hold name songs in the track listing. Once more, the sound is excellent and there isn't one bad track on the disc.
Do yourself a favour a buy this CD, you will not regret it as it's the perfect introduction to one of the truely great bands of all time.
THIS CD GOT ME INTO BLONDIE!, 11 Mar 2008
One day, about five years ago I was browsing thought my local supermaket for a cd. This eye catching red cd caught my attention I never heard of Blondie until I bought this cd! "Heart of Glass" and "Atomic" are defiantly my favourite tracks. This is the only Blondie hits complutation to ever be remastered and all the tracks sound great, the front cover is one of the rare photos taken of the group by Chris Rock. Five years on and I know everything about Blondie and they have to be one of my alltime favourite bands. Its a shame a lot people don't know about this amazing band! I recommend this cd above other compluations for the price and the high quality.
Still sound great 20 years later, 02 Aug 2007
If you are in a band and want to retain some artistic control over your music, then please listen to this album. Blondie was and is still one of the best pop groups of its generation. Yes, yes, I know they started off originally as a pseudo punk band, but good bands evolve and that is what Blondie did. Its not often if at all you hear groups singing in French (Sunday Girl and Denis) or the fact that Debbie Harry was rapping 20 years before rap become fashionable.
This album has everything, from the first track with the sublime lyrics... "When I met you at the restaurant, you could tell I was no debutante". Go on try it, you won't be dissappointed.
BLONDIE, 01 Aug 2007
Excellent album!! My g/f loves it!
I bought it for her as a present as she likes Blondie, and it is a truly wonderful piece of work as there is no one bad song on this album!
What else made me happy was the low price for this album too, thats a bargin and I suggest any one into punk/rock today to buy this as its a work of art!

Dreadful, 18 Nov 2008
A musical version of a blocked drain. Takes itself far too seriously. Retentive and overbearing.
Avoid.

I have listend to this album and thought it is a good listen through. the 1st time i listend i was not that sure. 2nd time i listened it was brill. you can tell they put effort into each track. their is a great track on the album called 'heat dies down' which i think is the best track on the album. if you like rock and indie rock buy this... its a gooden.
Can I send it back????, 23 Feb 2008
what a load of tosh. They sound like they are trying too hard, but falling short. I have tried to listen to this a number of times to see if it grows on me, but sadly to no avail!
Blonde on Blondie, 19 Jul 2008
Excellent CD well put together compilation of Hits - great to listen to well worth buying.
One of the best Very Best Of's around, 04 May 2008
What can you say about "Best of ..." albums that simply list the hits? Well, as "Best of" album's go, this is one of the best! Nine Police hits and another nine of Sting's as a soloist, all written by the main man himself.
One of the benefits of this format is that it allows you to revisit songs away from the context of the album in which they originally appeared. And so I was able to appreciate just how brilliant "Fields of Gold", "Brand New Day", "Desert Rose" and "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" really are: they are truly five-star songs. But the downside is that you also realise just how annoying is "Can't Stand Losing You".
But that's the only duff track in what is an excellent selection of songs.
What an album?, 07 Oct 2006
Gordon Sumner (alias Sting) established in the band Police, with a host of hits including Every Breath you take and Message in A Bottle. He later launched a successful solo career with hits such as English man in New York, If You Love Somebody Set Them Free, Fields of Gold, Desert rose and many more. He has four decades of experience in the music business. The appeal has not diminished as a musician
The Very Best of Sting and the Police features a collection hits of Gordon Sumner. This includes the association with the Police band and as a solo artist. Every single track from start to end is superb and you can listen timeslessly. The album makes an excellent inclusion in the CD collection
The beauty about the album is that it consist of songs from four decades 70's, 80's, 90's and present. He continues to maintain the appeal and dignity as a quality musician . If you share a passion for music of the highest quality, purchase this album. It sure beats music industry today, which is bombarded with manufactured bands. Sting exemplifies what real music should entail. There is talent in today music industry which I am not going to deny, but it is hard to find unique talent such as in the case of Sting. The album deservedly honours the talents and skills which he contributes to the music industry.
If you are looking for talented musician with a great voice as in the case of Sting and also leave a music legacy with their singles as proven by his excellent track record, then buy this album.
Brilliant from start to finish, 23 Mar 2004
An album full of brilliant classic tracks, but a glaring omission in "Shape of My Heart", recently defiled by the awful Sugar Babes and Craig David. If you think you like Sting, trust me, you do: buy this, its great!
A must have for your collection, 03 Jan 2004
When i was in my early teens, Sting was just a name that i had heard of but to be honest didnt really think much of... but i was slowly introduced to his music in lessons (by my rather odd music teacher who *may* have had a thing for him)and ever since i have LOVED this man. If you are going to buy one sting/Police album this has to be the one. If ur not really a sting fan but you listen to this album, u realise how amazing he really is! every track you think 'oh iv heard this song before wow!' and same for the next.. and the next... and the next... quite an amazing experience! so if you;re like me (a poor student) and can only afford one sting album - buy this one! its got everything and i love it soo much and im so upset because i cant afford tickets for his sacred love concert at the albert hall... :( maybe one day wen i become an investment banker he'll tour again?
SUPERB!, 06 Jun 2002
Wot an excellent greatest hits collection this is!From the classic "Can't stand losing you" through to "If you love somebody set them free" and even up to the present day with the likes of "Desert Rose."This is certainly the definitive way for a novice Sting fan to start their collection. There are only a few snags- some Police classics are missing, such as the original version of "The Bed's too big without you," the dark "Spirits in the material world" and of course, the anthem "Synchronicity II." However, all sins forgiven as this collection isn't a double album and yet, they've got his best singles on one, solitary disk.DEFINATELY WORTH THE MONEY!I would also like to recommend the original "Police:Greatest Hits," and "Fields of gold:The best of Sting 1984-94."

Product Description
The third album from the most successful of all the bands to spring from the New York punk scene, Parallel Lines is perhaps the definitive Blondie album. Produced by pop svengali Mike Chapman, it epitomises the astute mix of new wave chic and pop sensibility that spawned four hit singles from the album, and gives Debbie Harry's voice a platform of sleek professional pop that it had previously lacked. "Hanging On The Telephone" is a driven, up-tempo gem, "Picture This" soars deliciously around blissful melodies, while "Heart Of Glass" flirts seductively with disco. And it's proof of the album's mettle that tracks like "Fade Away And Radiate" are just as impressive as the singles. --Amber Cowan
Customer Reviews
Now and then !, 26 Nov 2008
Other than these exceptions it has everything.
i think that sony bmg should grow up..., 17 Dec 2007
i think that sony bmg should grow up and let mariah carey and wham onto this album instead of trying to make us buy christmas hits. shame on you sony bmg for ruining the best xmas album!
Avoid.
excellent debut, 28 Aug 2007
