Great Collection Of A Forgotten Era, 20 Sep 2008
The name Frank Sinatra is synonymous with with Jazz, Swing and Orchestral sound of music. He had an unmatched vocal talent and his music will always be viewed as legendary. It's hard to believe it's just over 10 years since we unfortunately lost this musical great. The Platinum collection compiles all of his classic greats that anyone and everyone would recognise instantly. His music wasn't made in the same way as todays standards. It wasn't released album by album, and you didn't need crazy looking music videos in order to get people to pay attention. It was music created solely to be performed in front of small audiences at such places like the legendary Copacabana night club. It wasn't music created with cheap gimmicks or a fancy look, it was music. Music from the heart and soul. This is what makes Sinatra the greatest vocalist in history.
Since the days of Sinatra and the Rat Pack, music has slowly gone down hill in regards to vocal ability. With the odd exceptions of course. We needn't fret though, as the Platinum collection gives us the opportunity to relive the Sinatra sound whenever we need to relax.
This is the definitive collection with the classics like "Come Fly With Me" "Love and Marriage" "You Make Me Feel So Young" and "Witchcraft." There's no denying the talent of Sinatra and there's no way you can dismiss this album. If you have even an ounce of respect for Sinatra or that generation of music you will all buy it. The Voice, 09 Jul 2008
I have been listening to Sinatra for about 50 years and I still LISTEN to him and I still occasionally find something new in the way he treats a song. I saw him in concert four times! His phrasing and his ability to sing so much with a single breath ( he swam underwater to improve this )were tools that he used with such effect. There have been many people who emulated him but no-one who came anywhere near him, as this collection shows very plainly. Masterly Compilation, 02 Jul 2006
A superb compilation. I have a good few Sinatra albums but none of the other compilations I have comes near this.
It has some of the finest records he ever made, across three, truly marvellous CDs. If you buy this, I cannot see how you could not love it.
Get this, then treat yourself to "Songs For Swinging Lovers " & "In The Wee Small Hours" (two superbly crafted records) & you'll be sorted.
A truly far reaching & expansive compilation. Excellent value, considering the quality of the music.
They really don't make them like this any more - let's face it, there was only one Frank Sinatra - buy this & you'll see why. Definitive Frank, 25 Feb 2005
The best Frank collection ever. They're all here - "I've got you under my skin", "Chicago", "It was just one of those things". How Capitol managed to get the best from Frank at a time when his career appeared to be over is one of popular musics great stories. The absolute and essential definitve Frank Sinatra collection.
The Best Sinatra Album Ever, 21 Jan 2005
If you could collect sinatra's best works and put them in an album, you'd end up with the platinum collection. I can't stress enough how good this album is. Can't stop listening (and singing along) to it regardless of how many times I hear it. A must have for all sinatra fans.

Strange Fruit...the greatest song ever, 02 Jun 2006
I love Billie Holiday and have for a long time.
Her voice haunts my soul every time I hear it, it reminds me of the first time I heard it in a cafe in Soho London, time seem to stand still as she sang "Strange Fruit".
This box set is a perfect start to her music and you can see the all other music from jazz to hip hop flowing through it, if you have never heard her sing then I plead with you to buy this boxset and start a journey that will take you to new highs.
A good start to female jazz vocals and from the queen herself.
This is what music supposed to be, 23 Jun 2004
It's so sad that there's nothing like this is being produced anymore. The music is what MUSIC supposed to be: powerful, soulful, joyful, relaxing, entertaining, pleasuring... what else can I say! I'm like flying on the clouds. Now I'm angry at myself why I've been this late to listen to these songs.
The Lady Sings The Blues, 24 Mar 2003
Billie Holiday is simply one of the best jazz singers of the day, and remains a legend today in spite of having recieved no technical training. Her inimitable voice produces an acute and dramaticly intense sound. It is hard to imagine that this is the same women who had to be dragged physically to her first recording session, due to an attack of nerves. 'Strange Fruit' is perhaps the most famous song in this collection, written about the racist lynchings in the American South that were still very much a reality when she sang it. Her voice cuts angrily through the song with an anguish which feels very potently real. There are also tenderer moments, Holiday's love songs are some of the most moving you'll ever hear 'The man I love' and and 'I can't give you anything but love' are keynotes, but all the tracks on this box set have much to recommend them. This is music with real feeling, beautifully expressed and sung wonderfully well by a woman in her artistic prime.

One of the finest singers of his--or any--age, Nat "King" Cole performed the definitive versions of many vocal standards. This collection gathers 22 of the velvety-voiced crooner's most popular favourites: "Let There Be Love", "Mona Lisa", "Unforgettable", "Let's Face The Music And Dance", to name a few. The choice of songs, as well as the superb quality of these recordings, both make The Ultimate Collection one of the better Nat "King" Cole compilations available. --Ted Kord

Natural Romantic!, 30 Jan 2006
This man speaks love and better than that, sings love like the air he breaths. This particular collection is so breathtaking especially Mona Lisa.It makes one wonder what's happened to all the realy good music these days.Nat was able to turn a simple story into something like a masterpiece and these lyrics will always remain unforgotten and live on forever......
A timeless easy listening classic!, 28 May 2003
A brillant album, timeless of the era and is perfect bliss. From the perfectly mellow "Christmas Song" to the perfectly jazz infused "Let there be Love", my personal favourite. And probably his best known due to its inclusion in many jazz albums. His appeal is still far reaching today with his tracks used for commercials such Quality Street and British Meat. If you like "Let there be love" you won't be disappointed by the album.
Ultimate..with the "e" missing, 09 Nov 2002
"Around The World" and "There Will Never Be Another You", would truly have made this album the "Ultimate",the solution of course is easy nowadays, put all these on a blank cd and add the other2 yourself (is this illegal). The compilers of these important artiste studies, usually come up short somewhere, even though there are scant examples of Nat ever coming up "short". This is a wonderful compilation of feet up eyes closed music, administered by an Artiste who deserves never to have an under par effort from a compiler. Nevertheless, you will love this even without the 2 missing gems.Enjoy
The greatest songs by the greatest voice of all time., 28 May 2000
Nat King Cole remains the greatest singer to ever record a song so one should be happy to listen to any album of his. However, this has to be the best Nat King Cole album one could ask for. Filled with some of the most romantic songs ever written, such as Unforgettable, When I Fall in Love and On The Street Where You Live, I can recommend this to any enthusiast of the jazz legend.
A CD to set the mood for relaxation or romance, 16 Dec 1999
The warmth and atmosphere, created by voice and music in this collection, provide a wonderfully serene listening experience. As a backdrop for a romantic evening or just pure relaxation this CD must be one of the best around.

Product Description
Just as irony is being pronounced dead, along comes the boozy holiday compilation Christmas with the Rat Pack, suggesting that rumours of its demise may be premature. Given the culture's simmering lounge mania, this collection (with its cheesy homage/rip-off Oceans 11 art direction) may be belated--but hey, punctuality was never these swingin' cats' bag, Jack. The novelty of having three of the 20th century's most notorious sinners belt, whoop and sing the praises of sleigh bells, roasting chestnuts and the virgin birth would be enough to recommend this dizzy 21-track delight, but there's actually some rewarding pop archaeology here as well. Two of the best tracks--Sammy Davis's ring-a-ding-ding romp through "Jingle Bells" and Dino's dreamy "Peace on Earth/Silent Night"--hail from a vintage, ultra-rare Reprise sampler. Sammy's typically over-the-top "Christmastime All Over the World" and Nat Cole tribute, "The Christmas Song" also make their CD debut. Dino's holiday TV specials yield more unreleased rarities: Sinatra-Martin duets of the loopy "Marshmallow World" and a touchingly tipsy take on "Auld Lang Syne" that suggests the boys have shared more than one cup of kindness. --Jerry McCulley

Smooth Christmas, 24 Oct 2008
In a vote for the best Christmas album, it's a toss up for me between this and Phil Spector's.
The voices of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin are perfect for Christmas songs. They sound all warm and homely, and you can almost imagine them standing in front of a log fire singing these.
Plus, the banter between Frank, Dean and Sammy is pretty entertaining and makes the songs stand out from the usual Christmas standards.
If you get it, you'll bring it out every year and it will put a smile on your face!
Superb Christmas Album, 08 Jan 2006
If you like these 3 superb performers and if you like Christmas music, you will absolutely love this album. I have been listening to this CD in my car for the last two months and I love it. Final verdict: You will not regret buying this great CD. Enjoy.
Frank is great, Dean is pretty good, but we need more Sammy, 04 Dec 2004
Do not worry that you are going to be subjected to the sound of Peter Lawford singing Christmas songs, because "Christmas with the Rat Pack" leaves the singing to Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis, Jr. The Chairman of the Board and Dino get eight tracks each, with Sammy only getting three, and then the trio sing the last two songs together and live. As you would expect, this is a Christmas album for those who are looking for something a bit stronger than eggnog when they are trimming the tree. Martin gets to cover the hip seasonal songs, like "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm," "Baby It's Cold Outside," and "Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!" while Frank does more of the religious songs, such as "The First Noel" and "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing." All Sammy gets to sing is "Christmas Time All Over the World," "The Christmas Song," and "Jingle Bells." Martin gets to cover "Silver Bells," "White Christmas," and "Winter Wonderland," so he makes a strong showing on this album. Sinatra, as you would expect, shines most on songs that show his finely honed vocalization skills, such as "The Christmas Waltz," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and "I'll Be Home for Christmas." Obviously it would be nice if Sammy was thrown a few more crumbs, and you can argue the album would hang together better if they cut the couple of songs Martin sings that really sound like he is holding a martini in one hand. Fans will probably not care, but there are a few tracks that seem to run a bit more against the grain than some of the others, even though Martin milks them for all they are worth. The cover is an "Ocean's 11" inspired image that had the "11" with a couple of candy stripes and then a shot of the three kings of holiday singing.

christmas AS IT SHOULD BE SUNG. YOUNG OR OLD IT MUST APPEAL TO EVERYONE ALL THE CLASSICS THAT SEEM TO HAVE BEEN AROUND AS LONG AS CHRISTMAS ITS SELF BUT STILL FEEL FRESH AND WARMING. SHERRY OR ALCOPOP THIS IS TOP OF THE CROP. GO ON, HAVE ANOTHER MINCE PIE

She Had It All, 07 Oct 2007
Some rave about Ella Fitzgerald, her tonal purity and mirth, but say she could lack emotional depth (not sure I agree). Some rave about Billie Holliday, but have to cede that she had a narrow range, although she was a groundbreaking stylist. Sarah Vaughan was the third great female voice of jazz, and believe you me, she lacked nothing!
This album is a wonderful budget introduction to one of the most remarkable voices of all time. Her range and her sheer musical intelligence are unsurpassable.
Sarah Vaughan- the Ultimate Voice, 09 Dec 2003
This CD is a selection of some of Sarah Vaughan's more recognised and most beautiful material. her rich, brown contralo voice is finely represented on this CD which includes tracks such as Summertime, Aint Misbehavin', and Time after Time. A must for all Sarah Vaughan lovers.

Dean Martin had two separate hit-making periods - in the fifties with Capitol and in the sixties with Reprise. The early sixties were not successful in the charts, although Dean continued to record albums and was also kept busy in other ways. You would normally have to buy one album to get his Capitol music and another to get his Reprise music. This collection spans both periods, although there is also a second volume, so you may end up buying two CD's anyway. This collection contains most of the songs that are associated with Dean, including Memories are made of this, That's amore, Volare, You're nobody till somebody loves you, In the chapel in the moonlight, Houston and Everybody loves somebody. Dean's first solo hit, Powder your face with sunshine, is also included. It was no match for Evelyn Knight's version, which was number one for many weeks, but it was a start. Evelyn was at the peak of her career while Dean was just beginning. Dean is often compared to Frank Sinatra, but their music was quite different. I enjoy both of them in different ways. While Frank's music was rooted in the big band sound of the late thirties, Dean's was altogether more relaxed - Dean was the classic crooner. In the sixties, his music took on a country flavor. It was never country enough for him to establish credibility amongst diehard country music fans, but for those who enjoy both pop and country music, Dean's sixties music is particularly appealing. Dean does not twang, so a lot of people who don't like country music can still enjoy his music. If you only ever buy one Dean Martin album, this is the one to buy. You can always add volume 2 later.

I'd heard some of these songs years ago but I'd forgotten how good they were. It was a real pleasure to rediscover Deano, especially the wonderful 'Gentle on my Mind', my favourite track. But it's so hard to knock any of these songs, they are incredibly mellow and laid back with superb vocalisation. They make you want to get up and dance. The recordings are excellent quality - highly recommended.

Product Description
The voice of Edith Piaf carries with it perhaps more national identity than that of any other recorded artist in the world. Tiny, frail, and tragic in her life, Piaf brought French identity to the rest of the world in a way that was understandable to all. Known as the Little Sparrow in her country, her voice was strong, bold, and passionate, even as she grew more infirm. The archetypical torch singer, she had massive popular success with songs like "Milord," "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien," and "La Vie, L'Amour," included here with 18 other classics. While this is a great compilation of some of her best material, the complete lack of enclosed notes or biographical material may frustrate those not familiar with her fascinating career. However, the work of one of the most original songbirds of all time speaks loud and clear for itself. --Derek Rath

The Sound of the Soul of France, 14 Jul 2004
Edith Piaf (1915-1963) was an unexpected artist, the child of a part-time prostitute and a circus acrobat, raised in a brothel, singing on street corners for pennies in Paris--until 1935, when her success at the famous Paris nightspot Gernys launched her to what would become international stardom. Notorious for her many ill-starred love affairs, attacked as a Nazi sympathizer during the French occupation, belatedly defended as a member of the French Resistance, self-destructing through alcohol and drugs, she proved as unexpected in her personal life as in her talents--but whatever the lady's personal failings, no one can fault her talents. She is, quite simply, the sound of the soul of France. Unless you speak French you may find the idea of purchasing songs sung in French a little off-putting. I myself speak what you might call "hotel French"--which is to say handful of standard phrases that would get me through in a pinch. When I listen to Piaf I occasionally understand a term here and there, but the specific meaning of the words escape me. But this no hindrance at all. Piaf has a passion that truly transcends the limits of language. No one need tell you that her tone is ironic; no one need tell you that the song is about poverty, lost love, a plea to God; it is there, it is inescapable. Her voice has the delicacy and strength of a steel wire, alternating sharp and flat tones in a uniquely French style, setting forth a meticulously rolled "r" in such a way as to give you chills and flying into a series of electrifying vibratos that are unique in all of music. Although it would take a box set to do this artist justice, THE VOICE OF THE SPARROW is a very nice introduction to eighteen of Piaf's most famous songs. In a general sense, Piaf typically sang love songs--and had an uncanny ability to shift from bright to dark tones, allowing the listener to feel a dozen different shades of each emotion that colors any single selection. Be it the internationally celebrated "La Vie en Rose," the intense "Mon Dieu," the defiant "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rein" or the super-sophisticated "T'es Beau, Tu Sais," once Piaf adopted a song it became hers alone; every other rendition seems pale in comparison. Sadly, the recordings on this CD have not been remastered--but it doesn't really matter. For one who could escape the limitations of language it is hardly difficult to leap the boundaries of recording technology with the sound of the heart. GFT, Amazon Reviewer
