"This is the Last Chance" to Hear the Original Cast Sing, 04 Nov 2008
With two successful movies (and soundtracks) behind them, the original cast of High School Musical came together one last time to sing, dance, and act together. And fans of the first two will enjoy this soundtrack just as much as the others.
As you'd expect, the music ranges from pop to rock to Broadway to hip hop and back again. And I guess I've gotten used to it because even the more hip hop tracks don't bother me as much this go around. Of course, all the songs have a pop based that will appeal to the core audience of pre-teens. They know where their bread is buttered.
And the songs cover just about everything you'd face in the last few months of high school. "A Night to Remember" brings back memories of my own prom every time I hear it. "Now or Never," the song from the previews, covers the push to leave behind a sports legacy. "The Boys are Back" is a fun track that Chad and Troy get to sing about their friendship. And there's the medley that forms the basis of the show they do in the movie, "Senior Year Spring Musical." It's really bits of the songs we've already seen, but they keep it fresh enough that it's still fun.
Probably the funniest track to me is the graduation mix of "We're All in This Together." Basically, they slow down the song from the original movie. Since that is still my least favorite song from the first movie, I'm not thrilled to see it again. And the fact that it is slower doesn't help things at all.
Troy and Gabriella get a plethora of songs this go around. Gabriella solos on "Walk Away" while Troy deals with his frustrations on choosing his future in "Scream." And they get three love songs. My favorite by far is the fast waltz "Can I Have This Dance." Honestly, it's a song that would work for a first dance at a wedding.
No, it's not as much fun as the original soundtrack. But neither is the movie. Still, there are some good songs that anyone will be more than willing to be caught singing.
Pure, straightforward pop, 02 Nov 2008
I've been to see the Movie and was blown away by the music. It's cheesy, sure, but with high school musical you knwo what you are getting. I think it starts off really cheesy(as does this CD) with troy and gabrielle doing a lot of "uh hu's" in their songs(I hate that), but it does develop in its maturity and this stuff is good.
I have to say, in a world where music is so pretentious, this is a blast of pure, straightforward pop and who could ask for any more than that.
Great!!!!!!!, 29 Oct 2008
This CD is fantastic, I bought it straight after going to watch the film at the cinema and the songs were still as good as they were in the movie, my fave songs are want it all and now or never.
Great Writing makes brilliant tunes, 28 Oct 2008
After watching the film, I wasn't sure whether I really liked the songs. After the first listen, I promise almost anyone who isn't listening in a public place will sing along when the songs come 'round again.
The songs have great lyrics, which are easy to remember and catchy. The actual songs are also really well written.
The best songs are probably "Now or Never", "I Want It All" and "The Boys Are Back"
Absolutely Fantastic!, 22 Oct 2008
I must admit I received this CD before seeing the film and wasn't sure if I liked them. But I have literally just got back from seeing the film and they are instantly a hit. You can relate the songs to whats happening in the film and they are slightly more serious! The film follows a similar pattern and the songs tell the usual story e.g Now or Never is the basketball game and the team are struggling especially Troy. I Want It All is a Ryan and Sharpay duet. The Boys Are Back is especially good in the film as well as the song, great dancing and beaty number. Scream is the new Bet On It with Troy getting angry! High School Musical is the grand finale just like All For One. All in all the film is great and seems to definitely signify the end so whether rumours of a forth is true or not, this film didnt seem to show any signs of another, it seemed pretty final. The soundtrack will grow on you just like all the others. Definitely has to be added to the High School collection!

Missing disc, 20 Nov 2008
Not so much a review - just wondering if anyone else's set is missing the fifth disc containing additional music and interviews? Bizarrely, there doesn't appear to be room in the outer cardboard box to contain a fifth disc! Unless it's supposed to be tucked inside the fourth disc's individual packaging - in which case, where's the track listing?
VERY frustrating! I shall, of course, be returning it and hope to receive a COMPLETE replacement...!
This is gonna be great! Cheaper elsewhere though!, 10 Oct 2008
Everyone knows the theme. But music lovers know that John Williams belts out the most memorable scores around. Between Star Wars, Superman, E.T. and Indiana Jones he has done some of his best work.
I already own the released soundtracks and they are all great but as per usual when you watch the films you think why was that piece not included. When they finally, after years of waiting, got round to releasing the complete Star Wars CD's they were fantastic, and it was all there. Even though I already own all the Indiana Jones OST's I shall still be buying this. Those little snippets previously unreleased are just the lost treasure Indy himself would be after.
Agree with everyone else though.
AMAZON WHAT'S WITH THE PRE RELEASE PRICE?!?!?!
Having looked it is available on pre order for up to £15 less in the UK not to mention the US price on Amazon's own .com site.
Still for any soundtrack music lover this is one not to miss. Sure to be a collector's item in years to come.
UK Release, 09 Oct 2008
Looks like I will be getting one of my American pals to order this and send it over here, as stated £47 is almost $100 dollars, which is crazy.
That said, this is something we've all waited an age for so it will be worth the extra hassle to get hold of, cannot wait!
Why so expensive in the UK?, 05 Oct 2008
This is a must buy set but why is the British customer paying almost twice as much for the same set, £43.49, as the US customer, $47.99,? Can someone please explain this?
The Wait Is Over!, 25 Sep 2008
Before christmas looms this will be the most anticipated release for any soundtrack film collector! For almost ten years there had been rumours of releases of these extended scores...then began Raiders.
Now from Concord Records they have managed to find the forgotten master tapes and have created a great complete package consisting of original material not heard or released for sometime!
John Williams is a 'wonderkind marvel' who creates a magical world thru his music. And so to relive those exciting serial pictures Indiana Jones is fighting again, not in pictures but within your mind and your heart!

A great Nitin album, 11 Nov 2008
I saw Nitin play in Bristol in early November 2008 and he gave the best performance of the 5 times I have seen him. A delicate and sensitive gig, with Nitin mainly playing acoustic guitar, accompanied by some sublime cello playing and indian flute and tabla playing - all mixed with dreamy singing. This album reflects all that. A true concept album - a 45 minute journey through life today. Such a wide variety of influnces - how wrong the last reviewer is! This is a great Nitin album, and I've loved him from the start. Turn it on, lie back on the sofa and let yourself drift away.
Pure rubbish, 02 Nov 2008
Its been coming for some time and finally Nitin has done it. I felt that the last two Nitin CDs lacked some imagination and this CD is by far the worst he has produced. The pop songs which start the album are derivative and when he finally gets to doing what he does best- the Indian influenced music towards the end- its all been heard before. Added to that the worst piece of music he has ever produced- 'My Soul'- 'sung' by Paul McCartney and I found myself sitting there shaking my head in disbelief. Come on Nitin- you had such promise in your early CDs- lets see a return of that spark!
Sounds like heaven., 21 Oct 2008
Days Of Fire is performed by Natty, an artist starting to get recognition and critical acclaim with his own album Man Like I. This was actually inspired by Natty's own experience of the July bombings in London in 2005. It's a good track, very easy to listen to, and catchy. It sounds like London and it's upbeat and a little bit gritty. A great opener.
October Daze features Tina Grace, who I admit I had not heard of prior to this release. She has a good, dulcet voice. The track reminds me of Portishead in its sound.
Bring It Home includes vocals from the talented Imogen Heap, and starts off very dreamy, slow and ambient but then changes tempo and becomes upbeat and funky, like a track you'd hear in a funky, upmarket wine bar in the city.
Interlude 1 includes spoken vocals by Paul McCartney and it's overall a great introduction to the following track, My Soul which features Paul McCartney himself.
My Soul was written as Paul's first real public expression of emotions regarding what transpired with his ex wife. Very moving and poignant piece with beautiful, subtle female vocals in the background which sound very classical Indian.
Interlude II is comprised of spoken Spanish in a sensual tone, speaking of the mountains. The wood instrument at the end is haunting and again, flows effortlessly into the next track.
Distant Dreams has gorgeous jazz instrumentals and the vocallist sounds very familiar, despite me not being familiar with her by name (Roxanne Tataei).
Interlude III is the most Nitin-Sawhney-esque piece so far; classic funky Indian music and vocals.
Shadowland is much the same as Interlude, although the female vocallist there has been replaced in this track by a male.
Daybreak....The song would not be out of place in some fancy Indian restaurant or on Brick Lane. Gorgeous.
Ek Taan contains mind-blowingly beautiful female vocals and a very relaxing piano instrumental, and it melds into an easy, relaxed next track.
Transmission is relaxed but for me not a track I like because it sounds a bit too monotonous in terms of the vocal register used.
Last Train To Midnight is much the same as Transmission.
Firmament is a gorgeous instrumental, classic Nitin Sawhney. Simple, moving, understated and beautiful.
The album closes with Charu Keshi Rain in collaboration with Anoushkar Shankar, and this, along with My Soul, is my favourite track on the album. Beautiful sitars and relaxing, effortless grace.

Great Writing makes brilliant tunes, 28 Oct 2008
After watching the film, I wasn't sure whether I really liked the songs. After the first listen, I promise almost anyone who isn't listening in a public place will sing along when the songs come 'round again.
The songs have great lyrics, which are easy to remember and catchy. The actual songs are also really well written.
The best songs are probably "Now or Never", "I Want It All" and "The Boys Are Back"

mixed feelings, 31 Jul 2008
I have to agree with the writer of the 1-star review that the actress who plays Elphaba on Broadway (and is featured on the cd) definitely has a disappointing voice compared to the West End actress. However, I do think that the actors playing Glinda and the Wizard, in contrast, have a better voice on Broadway, compensating a little for Elpahaba. I really do hope that a West End version of this cd will become available at some point.
HYPE OVER SUBSTANCE, 09 Jun 2008
the album is definitely better than the show, which in my opinion is just a big panto, idina menzel thankfully sounds better on the album than she ever did on stage in london, kerry ellis showed how it should be done, and i think they should release the london cast version, if you want camp cheesy songs that are badly edited then buy the album, but after youve seen the show you will realise that the album misses some very important plotlines, and songs dont make as much sense as they do when you see the show,
TRULY WICKED, 31 Mar 2008
I have not been fortunate enough to be able to see Wicked on stage yet, however I saw clips of the show on television and immediately wanted to find out more so visited the shows website and listened to clips from some of the tracks and was blown away. I have read the book by Gregory Maguire so had a good idea what the show was all about but never before have I been so captivated by a score without the ability to experience the show itself. With such gripping songs as 'The Wizard & I', 'Defying Gravity', 'For Good' it is a must for any musicals fans collection.
Amazing, 30 Mar 2008
I have not got thw CD yet, but, I have seen the show with Kerry Ellis, amazing! I hope the CD lives up to the west end performance!
This really is (at risk of sounding cliche) Wicked!, 18 Feb 2008
Yes, I said it, the title of a thousand reviews - "Wicked" is wicked!
But, in all seriousness, it is. I've seen reviews which have labelled some of the songs here as not up to par others from the musical, and from other works of Stephen Schwartz. I can now denounce those rumours with the cheery air that comes from listening to "Wicked" for the forty-seventh time. Every song on this album, except, perhaps, the lacklustre 'Wonderful' (although even that is good to sing along to when you're in a sing-along situation), is wonderfully addictive, from the cheerfully sinister 'No One Mourns the Wicked' to the insanely catchy 'What is this Feeling?' to the mind-blowingly powerful 'Defying Gravity' to the tender, heart-wrenching 'For Good' - I could go one with irritating comparisons and over-used adjectives for the whole review. Fortunately, however, I'm just going to leave you with this - buy this CD. Whether you've seen the show or not (and believe me, after this you'll want to) this is a great CD for all music/al lovers to have in their collection.

Go Buy Them!
Beautiful sitars and relaxing, effortless grace.
mixed feelings, 31 Jul 2008
EndTitle Credit Music!!!, 10 Nov 2008
Overall, a good soundtrack, with nice references back to Casino Royale. But, where on earth is the end credits music? It's missing. Shame on Sony, as this was great.
At last!, 08 Nov 2008
This is a really crackingly good James Bond score. On his fifth outing as composer, David Arnold has created a work that is both listenable and catchy.
I'll admit right away, I am firmly in the camp that has cringed through Arnold's work on three out of the five previous, John-Barryless films. Arnold's love of sequenced layers of percussive turmoil drowned out any semblance of melody and the James Bond theme was plastered on with a trowel at various moments when other ideas had obviously run out.
Thankfully, all this seems to be changing now. Casino Royale began a return to proper Bond form and Quantum of Solace has taken it still further. Even the wierd, faux Live and Let Die title song is properly referenced and included throughout, albeit as a variation.
It's really nice to see David Arnold getting more melody into the dramatic passages of his Bond scores. Not that it was totally absent before, but he did have a tendency not to stick with any one idea long enough for it to remain memorable. This may beslightly true of some portions of the action music in Quantum of Solace but it has to be said, this work stands head and shoulders above his previous efforts.
Bond is starting to like Bond once more.
Footnote: If I were David Arnold, given Eon Productions' erratic hiring rendencies, I'd now be worried for my job. Main title designer, Danny Kleinman did some of his best work on Casino Royale and was rewarded by getting dumped from this outing.
Another great David Arnold soundtrack, 02 Nov 2008
David Arnold's latest Bond soundtrack has the same qualities as the four he's done before. He's a master of action sequence music, and there are pieces of exhilarating full-on drama.
David Arnold brings some of the international flavours such as Bolivia and Haiti into the blend- there are even some panpipes at one point, but don't let that put you off- while retaining that distinctly Bond flavour. New themes for this film blend in with the recognisable Bond melodies and it's all extremely slick.
The theme song "Another Way To Die" by Jack White with Alicia Keys is not the strongest Bond theme tune, by a long way, but it is a bit of a grower and it's good that it's included (unlike on the previous soundtrack).
It would've been nice to have included a proper Monty Norman-style "James Bond Theme" on here for completeness (that famous "DADA! derrr... DADA! derrrr... DA-DA DA-DA DA!" bit is missing) but otherwise it's a brilliant soundtrack album.
