"This is the Last Chance" to Hear the Original Cast Sing, 04 Nov 2008
With two successful movies (and soundtracks) behind them, the original cast of High School Musical came together one last time to sing, dance, and act together. And fans of the first two will enjoy this soundtrack just as much as the others.
As you'd expect, the music ranges from pop to rock to Broadway to hip hop and back again. And I guess I've gotten used to it because even the more hip hop tracks don't bother me as much this go around. Of course, all the songs have a pop based that will appeal to the core audience of pre-teens. They know where their bread is buttered.
And the songs cover just about everything you'd face in the last few months of high school. "A Night to Remember" brings back memories of my own prom every time I hear it. "Now or Never," the song from the previews, covers the push to leave behind a sports legacy. "The Boys are Back" is a fun track that Chad and Troy get to sing about their friendship. And there's the medley that forms the basis of the show they do in the movie, "Senior Year Spring Musical." It's really bits of the songs we've already seen, but they keep it fresh enough that it's still fun.
Probably the funniest track to me is the graduation mix of "We're All in This Together." Basically, they slow down the song from the original movie. Since that is still my least favorite song from the first movie, I'm not thrilled to see it again. And the fact that it is slower doesn't help things at all.
Troy and Gabriella get a plethora of songs this go around. Gabriella solos on "Walk Away" while Troy deals with his frustrations on choosing his future in "Scream." And they get three love songs. My favorite by far is the fast waltz "Can I Have This Dance." Honestly, it's a song that would work for a first dance at a wedding.
No, it's not as much fun as the original soundtrack. But neither is the movie. Still, there are some good songs that anyone will be more than willing to be caught singing.
Pure, straightforward pop, 02 Nov 2008
I've been to see the Movie and was blown away by the music. It's cheesy, sure, but with high school musical you knwo what you are getting. I think it starts off really cheesy(as does this CD) with troy and gabrielle doing a lot of "uh hu's" in their songs(I hate that), but it does develop in its maturity and this stuff is good.
I have to say, in a world where music is so pretentious, this is a blast of pure, straightforward pop and who could ask for any more than that.
Great!!!!!!!, 29 Oct 2008
This CD is fantastic, I bought it straight after going to watch the film at the cinema and the songs were still as good as they were in the movie, my fave songs are want it all and now or never.
Great Writing makes brilliant tunes, 28 Oct 2008
After watching the film, I wasn't sure whether I really liked the songs. After the first listen, I promise almost anyone who isn't listening in a public place will sing along when the songs come 'round again.
The songs have great lyrics, which are easy to remember and catchy. The actual songs are also really well written.
The best songs are probably "Now or Never", "I Want It All" and "The Boys Are Back"
Absolutely Fantastic!, 22 Oct 2008
I must admit I received this CD before seeing the film and wasn't sure if I liked them. But I have literally just got back from seeing the film and they are instantly a hit. You can relate the songs to whats happening in the film and they are slightly more serious! The film follows a similar pattern and the songs tell the usual story e.g Now or Never is the basketball game and the team are struggling especially Troy. I Want It All is a Ryan and Sharpay duet. The Boys Are Back is especially good in the film as well as the song, great dancing and beaty number. Scream is the new Bet On It with Troy getting angry! High School Musical is the grand finale just like All For One. All in all the film is great and seems to definitely signify the end so whether rumours of a forth is true or not, this film didnt seem to show any signs of another, it seemed pretty final. The soundtrack will grow on you just like all the others. Definitely has to be added to the High School collection!

My daughter bought me this for my birthday, cant stop playing it full volumn in the car. Cry everytime it gets to "slipping thru my fingers" I can really relate to this song. A must for every Abba fan and even some who aren't. All the cast did a fantastic job with all the songs, some better than others.
Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou...., 28 Sep 2008
...for this soundtrack, I don't think I could have coped without the songs whist waiting for the film to be released. I listen to it in the car, on my iPod, on my laptop - it's sad (and I really don't know much about what's out at the minute) but I didn't want to lose the feel good feeling I got when I left the cinema.
Disappointing , 11 Sep 2008
I was disapointed with the cd because the songs werent the same as the movie and you didn't get the fun and the energy with it. Otherwise it was very well recorded and they all sound amazing just shame that they changed it so much. Think this is worth buying if you love all the songs on it and prefer a more mellow version. Can't wait for the movie to come out now
Mamma Mia - exciting, feel good, glad to be alive sound track, 21 Aug 2008
Being a stout ABBA fan from their glory days after winning the Eurovision with Waterloo I tread carefully when being injected with any take-off of their music. However no reserve needs putting in place in my opinion as this just comes across as feel good Abba one hundred per cent. Obviously we're never going to get the vocal range that Abba had but for feel good, solid enjoyment, love of music, crowd appreciation, this delivers one hundred and ten per cent. Abba appeal to all generations and will never lose their appeal. Be surprised if you don't find yourself joining in as it's hard to resist! Was surprised at some of the tracks missing from the film following the stage show but ultimately Abba haven't made a bad record so wasn't too bothered.

I have to agree with the writer of the 1-star review that the actress who plays Elphaba on Broadway (and is featured on the cd) definitely has a disappointing voice compared to the West End actress. However, I do think that the actors playing Glinda and the Wizard, in contrast, have a better voice on Broadway, compensating a little for Elpahaba. I really do hope that a West End version of this cd will become available at some point.
HYPE OVER SUBSTANCE, 09 Jun 2008
the album is definitely better than the show, which in my opinion is just a big panto, idina menzel thankfully sounds better on the album than she ever did on stage in london, kerry ellis showed how it should be done, and i think they should release the london cast version, if you want camp cheesy songs that are badly edited then buy the album, but after youve seen the show you will realise that the album misses some very important plotlines, and songs dont make as much sense as they do when you see the show,
TRULY WICKED, 31 Mar 2008
I have not been fortunate enough to be able to see Wicked on stage yet, however I saw clips of the show on television and immediately wanted to find out more so visited the shows website and listened to clips from some of the tracks and was blown away. I have read the book by Gregory Maguire so had a good idea what the show was all about but never before have I been so captivated by a score without the ability to experience the show itself. With such gripping songs as 'The Wizard & I', 'Defying Gravity', 'For Good' it is a must for any musicals fans collection.
Amazing, 30 Mar 2008

This really is (at risk of sounding cliche) Wicked!, 18 Feb 2008
Yes, I said it, the title of a thousand reviews - "Wicked" is wicked!
But, in all seriousness, it is. I've seen reviews which have labelled some of the songs here as not up to par others from the musical, and from other works of Stephen Schwartz. I can now denounce those rumours with the cheery air that comes from listening to "Wicked" for the forty-seventh time. Every song on this album, except, perhaps, the lacklustre 'Wonderful' (although even that is good to sing along to when you're in a sing-along situation), is wonderfully addictive, from the cheerfully sinister 'No One Mourns the Wicked' to the insanely catchy 'What is this Feeling?' to the mind-blowingly powerful 'Defying Gravity' to the tender, heart-wrenching 'For Good' - I could go one with irritating comparisons and over-used adjectives for the whole review. Fortunately, however, I'm just going to leave you with this - buy this CD. Whether you've seen the show or not (and believe me, after this you'll want to) this is a great CD for all music/al lovers to have in their collection.

Product Description
What's left to be said about Andrew Lloyd Webber's adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera a decade after its premiere? That it's maddeningly ubiquitous? A stitch-up of various themes shoplifted from the Italian operatic repertoire? A critic-proof crowd pleaser that's probably being staged somewhere in the world as you read this? A mega-hit that will likely outlive Titanic in the pop-culture pantheon, Phantom has largely redefined--for better or worse--the manner in which modern musicals are conceived, staged and marketed. Its influence has reached far beyond the traditional confines of London and Broadway. A favourite example: an abridged version that was the centrepiece of Los Angeles' longest running transvestite revue, replete with 14-inch chandeliers and a man-playing-a-woman-playing-a-man in the title role. --Jerry McCulley

My daughter bought me this for my birthday, cant stop playing it full volumn in the car. Cry everytime it gets to "slipping thru my fingers" I can really relate to this song. A must for every Abba fan and even some who aren't. All the cast did a fantastic job with all the songs, some better than others.

...for this soundtrack, I don't think I could have coped without the songs whist waiting for the film to be released.

Superb!, 18 Aug 2007
I own the film soundtrack and this original cast recording version. I've seen the show 4 times now and this CD brings back the memories; the Overture does give you goose bumps and from this recording you get the flavour of the theatre experience.
When sung well, as they are in this case, 'Music of the Night' and 'All I Ask of You' are very moving. Sarah Brightman is the star of the original show as her voice is truly moving. I've always been skeptical about Michael Crawford, although his signing is excellent, I don't think brings the true gravitas of the character of the Phantom all that well.
I do like his interpretation of 'Music of the Night' though.
I've always preferred a Phantom that doesn't have too much of a 'Choir-Boy' type voice; Crawford gets close to this for me but never quite crosses the line. I saw performance once in London and it was a Stand-in Phantom and his voice was too high, I'm afraid!
Speaking of which, go and see Earl Carpenter, currently starring in the West End in London as the Phantom. He is the master. The last time I went with my wife-to-be and he was perfect; his portrayal of 'Music of the Night' that night was the best I've ever seen or heard, anywhere including New York (the Broadway cast were no slackers either, they were excellent).
So, which is best, the film or this soundtrack? My answer is they are both excellent, but are both very different portrayals of the songs. Get them both because it's worth it.
Fabulous!!!, 12 Jul 2007
I saw a recent production of the Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre in London....this album takes me right back...the overture gives me goosebumps!!! I would recomend this album to anyone who is a an of the Phantom of the Opera!!
Phantom of the Opera review, 07 Jun 2007
This album is an original cast recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical production of the phantom of the opera based on the book by Gaston Leroux.
It tells the story of a once great composer, who after an accident, was left with a deformed face. He wears a mask and hides in the depths of the Paris Opera House. He is known as the "Phantom of the Opera" as he scares the performers and demands wages and a seat at every performance.
However the supposedly heartless Phantom falls in love with his pupil Christine Daaé. She begins to like him but when his face is revealed to her she is struck with horror.
She is then reunited with her childhood friend Raoul de Chagny. She falls in love with him and, as expected the Phantom is furious.
He resorts to anything even murder, to get Christine back. However it just makes her more frightened of him. Despite his evil ways, you feel sorry for the Phantom at the end.
The music written to explain the story is amazing. When listening to the album you're transported to Her Majesty's theatre, as it feels as if you are in the audience. I think this is the main aim with recordings of musicals, and this one certainly achieved it.
This album includes many famous songs that are familiar to people worldwide. When first released the Phantom of the Opera made many music hits with its songs. Some songs are "phantom of the opera", "wishing you were some how here again", "music of the night" and "masquerade" to name a few.
Although it is a long album it is worth buying because the story is very easy to follow. The music immediately draws you in and leaves you feeling entertained. If you have watched the performance, this album is a great opportunity to remind you of the songs.
My favourite CD of all time., 13 Apr 2007
This really is my favourite collection of songs of all time. Need I explain? The music speaks for itself. I grew up with the CD in the car as a baby, in the time of recorded tapes, and saw the production on my thirteenth birthday. I still listen to it now (although on CD!), and am planning a return to the theatre.
Andrew Lloyd Webbers works are all fantastic, but in my opinion this one shows his true talent and merits. The complexity of the melodies, and various singers in every song amaze me every time I listen - in particular to "Prima Donna".
A true classic in the history of music. I recommend this CD to everyone who has an interest in truly wonderful music, obviously with a focus on musicals and west-end productions. Certainly growing up with this music has made me far more appreciative of fabulous music and the arts than many of my friends!
I imagine this CD will be with me forever. A bargain if ever I saw one.
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!, 23 Feb 2007
Cannot honestly say how much I LOVE the CD! Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman are perfect in the roles of Phantom and Christine, and make it so believable.
I have been to see the stage show recently, and a few of the lyrics have been changed since (quite a lot in 'Think of Me' and a few in 'Down Once More' at the end)
If you loved the show, the CD is a must!!

The best songs are probably "Now or Never", "I Want It All" and "The Boys Are Back" Absolutely Fantastic!, 22 Oct 2008
Definitely has to be added to the High School collection! mixed feelings, 31 Jul 2008
HYPE OVER SUBSTANCE, 09 Jun 2008
the album is definitely better than the show, which in my opinion is just a big panto, idina menzel thankfully sounds better on the album than she ever did on stage in london, kerry ellis showed how it should be done, and i think they should release the london cast version, if you want camp cheesy songs that are badly edited then buy the album, but after youve seen the show you will realise that the album misses some very important plotlines, and songs dont make as much sense as they do when you see the show, TRULY WICKED, 31 Mar 2008
I have not got thw CD yet, but, I have seen the show with Kerry Ellis, amazing! I hope the CD lives up to the west end performance!
If you loved the show, the CD is a must!! mamma mia help !!, 08 Aug 2008
never ever liked abba 30 years on i still can't stand them now this ******* film has regurgatated their dire music once again ..mamma mia!!!!! i would nt give it any star ratings but it was the only way to move on mamma mia!!!! Mamma Mia Rocks¬¬, 06 Mar 2007
I love this CD. I bought it after seeing the musical because I enjoyed the musical so much and wanted something from the show that I could play time and time again.
This is amazing, just as amazing as the show. I can play it from start to finish without wanting to skip any of the tracks.
The vocals/singers on this CD aren't as good as the singer who I saw but it is still a good CD to listen to especially if you have been to see the show and have enjoyed it.
This will certainly be played time and time again because it is a great CD.
What A Show!, 18 Jan 2006
I saw Mamma Mia two summers ago, when I was around eighteen years old, while I was visiting my brother in Toronto Canada. We were actually meant to see another musical that was on at the time but it had actually stopped running the day we arrived! I was annoyed that the musical we were meant to see wasn't on but my mother really wanted to see Mamma Mia so I decided to tag along anyway. It was truely a show to remember... I initially thought the musical was just a tribute to Mamma Mia but was so shocked to find how closely each song could actually be linked to the story of the show. In a nutshell, the show is about a young woman about to be married and her search to find who her real father is. From reading into her mothers things, she soon finds theres a possibility that any three men could be her father so she invites them all to the Island where she will be wed. It also follows the story of her mother and her mother's two best friends and their nostalgic look down memory lane! I found the show so emotionally moving, especially when the song "Slipping Through My Fingers" is played. I actually bought the soundtrack straight after the show in Toronto but i've been playing it so much for the past year and a half that it has stopped working! So I came on to buy it again and just thought i'd share my views with the rest of the "Mamma Mia" fans. If you havent bought this album yet, i really advice you to do so, and if you havent seen the show, you havent lived! Abba truely are an inspiration! I'm actually going to see the show again now in March when it comes to Belfast. Its a completely different cast so atleast It won't be exactly the same as the show in Toronto! I can't wait...
speechless, 03 Mar 2005
As a female in my late teens, i cant ever say that i was a huge fan of Abba, but being a person thats willing to try anything once i decided to take a trip to Mamma Mia in the Point Depot in Dublin.I was truely speechless after walking out of the show. The very next day, the only agenda i had was to hit the record shops to purchase the soundtrack. It has been nearly a year and everytime it brings a smile to my face.A FANTASTIC album worth buying.
Hear CD then Show OR See Show then CD. There's no difference, 08 Jan 2005
This is a stunning show that makes you smile long after the event. This CD has the energy of the fantastic music and also leads you through an outline of the story. If you see the show you WILL buy the CD. I have to declare an interest at this point as I have now seen the show 6 times in London and twice in America. It is possible that I have lost my objectivity!!

Product Description
Lionel Bart's wonderful musical adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic was the first London stage musical to be transplanted to Broadway with the same kind of sensation it received in Britain-- something that is now common in these post-Cats/Les Miserables times. Although no one from this British cast ever became enormously famous (future Monkee Davy Jones was in the second Broadway cast)--and Sir Carol Reed's film version receives all the critical accolades--this remains the better recording, featuring all the songs cut from the film, while excluding the film's musical interludes that simply seem annoying without the visuals. Just compare Bruce Brochnik to the film's Mark Lester in the title role. Or Clive Revill to Ron Moody's Fagin. Or any of the principals, for that matter--and the differences are remarkable. --Bill Holdship
