So glad to have Enya back and as good as EVER!, 18 Nov 2008
I have been a Enya fan since Watermark, and always buy her albums straight away, i had forgot to sign up to her newsletter, so didn't know about this album till a few days before the release, quicky ordered it and WOW how good is this album!!
Yes it has a winter theme, but I know I will be playing this anytime of the year (I like to put 5 Enya CDs on my hifi and play them on random, bliss!) The first track And winter came... is pure Enya, the perfect way to get back into the Enya Magic, the single Trains and Winter Rains is in the vain of Anywhere is, again so beautiful, but the highlight for me is track 11 My! My! Time Flies! a bit of a new direction for Enya with electric guitar and a lot more folk than celtic, but it is fantastic, just makes you want to sing along.
So another wait well worth the wait!, will be played Xmas eve, Xmas Day, Boxing day and on and on!!!
If you are new to Enya, i recommend the best put together greatest hits album Only Time: the Collection a beautiful package and well worth every penny!
Looking forward to more from the Queen of Irish music!
Enya at her best, 15 Nov 2008
I'll start by saying I haven't heard the album yet, but I did hear the single. As with all her material this is Enya at what she does best: create a mood that conjures up images of winter and evenings by the fire.
If you need to wind down from the busy schedule of daily life, be it summer or winter, this is where you go and immerse yourself in her music.
It was only time before she released a winter-themed album, and now she has. I will love every minute of it.
A welcome return, 15 Nov 2008
I have every album Enya has released and this latest effort is a welcome addition to her portfolio.'And Winter Came' is very much based around Christmas time which could limit it's year round appeal. But although what Enya does is predictable she does do it in a very professional way and continually shows herself to be an excellent artist.
The standout tracks on this album are the more up tempo numbers 'White Is In The Winter Night','Trains And Winter Rains'and perhaps my favourite 'My!My!Time Flies'.The latter actually includes a guitar solo and Enya singing in a slightly different way and I think that it works well. Some of the slower tracks 'O Come,O Come ,Emmanuel','The Spirit Of Christmas Past' and 'Oiche Chiuin' have the feel of being performed in a cathedral with their haunting melodies and again they are effective.
You do know what you will get with this album but I still recommend it without any doubts. When you have a load of Christmas presents to wrap up just stick on this CD and lose yourself to the lovely sounds of a special talent. She looks great on the cover too!I give this five stars simply because it is so relaxing and perhaps her best release for quite a while
SUPERB AS EVER., 14 Nov 2008
WHEN I FIRST PLAYED THIS AFTER WEEKS OF EXITEMENT OF A NEW ENYA CD IN THE PIPELINE I WAS SO DISSAPOINTED I WAS QUITE DOWN I CAN TELL YOU, AFTER YEARS OF WAITING YOU BUILD UP SO MUCH IN YOUR MIND OF WHAT IS TO COME?I MEAN I HAVE LOVED ENYA FOR 20 YEARS SINCE WATERMARK.BUT DONT WORRY ALL YOU ENYA FANS I NOW THINK IT IS ONE OF HER BEST WORKS (HER BEST FOR ME WILL ALWAYS BE "A DAY WITHOUT RAIN")YES IT IS A CHRISTMAS TYPE OF AN ALBUM, AND I CAN SEE ME PLAYING THIS AROUND THIS TIME OF YEAR AND NO NOT THROUGH THE SPRING AND SUMMER BUT WHAT A GREAT FEELING I WILL HAVE SAY AROUND AUGUST THAT SOON I WILL BE PLAYING ENYA " AND WINTER CAME" I MUST JUST SAY THAT FRIENDS WHO HAVE BEEN ROUND TO ME AND THE CD HAS BEEN PLAYING HAVE SAID(WHAT EVERY ONE SAYS) WHAT IS THIS MUSIC ITS SO CALMING, AND BLESS ME I GO OFF ON ONE AND SAY "OH ITS ENYA"AND WELL THERE YOU HAVE IT, A SUPERB ALBUM WORTHY OF ANY COLLECTION IN MY BOOK... ENYA BLESS HER HEART AND LOOKING GREAT ON THE COVER I MUST SAY.
Wonderful calming Christmas music, 14 Nov 2008
I must state that I love Enya. I am a forty year old stressed mother of three boys and find her music wonderfully soothing. I love Christmas, too. I bought this on the first day it came out and now feel ready for Christmas. I can see myself baking my mince pies with this on in the background and I can't wait! I am a Christian and find some of the lyrics magical. In the mad rush of Christmas, this is the music to play for a break. If you don't like Enya or don't like Christmas, don't buy it!!

Boyz are back!, 09 Nov 2008
Since they parted 8 years ago there have been many releases of their greatest hits in one form or another. Being a die hard fan I had purchased them all but they all had tracks which had preiously been available. The boyz are breaking new ground wih this album. Not only has it got all of their hits (which you had with 90% of the other greatest hits released) you have new tracks. With the new single and two other new tracks. This delux edition also offers some fantastic extras which are well worth a viewing! If you are not too keen on their new style then I wouldn't bother buying this as it is no different to all the others but for all true fans, yet again this is another must have!! After listening to this I feel 14 again!!
DVD does play on North American players, 07 Nov 2008
Great band but this review is just to inform potential buyers from the US that the DVD suprisingly plays on my US dvd player. I have a region free player when needed but this one is NTSC for some reason. I wonder how the Eupropeans watch it?
Michelle, 22 Oct 2008
I already own the Boyzone Greatest Hits album but had no problem purchasing Back Again... No Matter What for their new material.
The album presents a good selection of their previous hits including No Matter What and A Different Beat but, unfortunately, does not contain hits such as Key to My Life and So Good. That's the only negative I can find in the whole album! The songs are all really varied in style and presented well; you can never doubt their strength as a band and their harmonies are always pitch perfect. This is continually proven during all of their live performances!
Their new material is very interesting and varied in style from the 60's sounding Love You Anyway to the beautiful ballad that is Better. I think Ronan and Stephen's voices have improved dramatically over the years which, since they were pretty strong vocally from the beginning, is really good!
On the whole I'd definitely recommend this album to anybody who enjoys music that makes you happy and puts a smile on your face. You can't fail to want to sing along or hum along to most of the tracks :-). Obviously if you're not a fan of boybands or want to remain loyal to a single group then, perhaps, you won't enjoy this album (stranger things have happened!). If this is the case then the most simple piece of advice I can offer is just don't listen to it - simple as that :-). To those of you that remain undecided it's definitely worth keeping an open mind and having a listen because I really and truly believe that Boyzone are one of the strongest bands we've ever had and, perhaps, will ever have the pleasure of listening to/seeing perform.
welcome back boyz, 19 Oct 2008
id just like to say i think its great to have the boyz back where they belong and i think with this album (especially the new stuff) they will prove that they deserve all the success theyve had and will have in the future.
The Boyz are back...No Matter What!, , 17 Oct 2008
When Boyzone first appeared on the music scene in the early 1990s no-one gave them much hope of a long and prosperous career. How wrong they all were! Now, after an 8 year break, the lads are back bigger and better than before. If you took the opportunity of seeing the boyz in concert last Spring/Summer you will know exactly what I'm talking about. The songs may have been the same but as Boyzone sung many of their 16 consecutive top 5 hits they captivated their audience once more.
This album may be the bands second Greatest Hits album but it is well worth buying. A trip down memory lane for some and a path to future for many, this album has it all. If you love Boyzone, you'll love this album. If you're not a fan, well you might surprise yourself at just how many songs you're happily singing along to.

Product Description
Over the years this Irish folk band has recorded with James Galway, Roger Daltrey, Nanci Griffith, Elvis Costello, Willie Nelson, and many more. For The Long Black Veil, they made their biggest haul yet: the Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Marianne Faithfull, Mark Knopfler, Sinead O'Connor, Tom Jones, Sting, and Ry Cooder. Knopfler, Faithfull, and O'Connor wander off-key in their vocals. Sting, Jones, and Mick Jagger stay on key in theirs, but never quite connect with their chosen songs nor with the ancient folk tradition the Chieftains tap into each time they play. A powerful musical connection is forged three times on the album, however. Morrison patiently builds his own "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?" to a grand climax over flute and pipes; Ry Cooder adds a mysterious Mideastern guitar part to an instrumental version of "Dunmore Lasses;" and on "The Rocky Road to Dublin," Charlie Watts's ceili-swing drumming holds together a loose adventurous jam session which features Kevin Coneff's lead vocal and wild exchanges of the Chieftains' twin fiddles and the Rolling Stones' guitars. Three epiphanies may not be enough to justify the Long Black Veil project, but you can find a whole album of such moments on Van Morrison & the Chieftains' 1988 Irish Heartbeat, one of the greatest Irish recordings ever made. --Geoffrey Himes

WOW...SIMPLY AMAZING!, 10 Nov 2002
This is a terrific CD, with its wild meld of celtic, pop, folk, and country strains. The Chieftains, accompanied by such music greats as Sting, Mick Jagger, Sinead O'Connor, The Rolling Stones, Marianne Faithfull, Tom Jones, Van Morrison, among others...who would have thought such an assemblage would result in such a cohesive recording of such wildly divergent music? Of particular note are Sting's mournful rendition of "Mo Ghile Mear" and Sinead O'Connor's stylization of "The Foggy Dew" and "He Moved Through The Fair". Mick Jagger also does justice to "A Long Black Veil". This CD is simply a great recording overall!
Fiddles, whistles and rock stars!, 27 Apr 2001
This CD certainly proves that The Chieftains have friends in high places! This album is packed full of rock stars (Mick Jagger, Sting, Sinead O' Connor, Van Morrison, Mark Knopfler, Tom Jones and Marianne Faithfull) singing traditional Irish songs. This is an interesting album and the songs do work better than I expected them too. This is a lively collection of songs and none of the artists sound out of place, but I think I would still prefer hearing these songs sung by folk singers. Nonetheless this is a good introduction to The Chieftain's style of music and an essential buy if you are a fan of the artists involved.

Product Description
One of the elements that's made the Chieftains the stellar Celtic band in the world is their love of innovative collaborations with mainstream pop stars. The Wide World Over: A 40-Year Celebration gathers into a single collection some of the Irish ensemble's most memorable moments, including predictable alliances with artists such as Van Morrison, who sings "Shenandoah", to additional backing by the Irish Film Orchestra and unlikely pairings like the Rolling Stones, who add a rock kick and the "Satisfaction" riff to "The Rocky Road To Dublin". Cross-cultural experts Linda Ronstadt and Los Lobos demonstrate their versatility on the Mexican ditties "Txalaparta" and "Guadalupe", on which pipes and pennywhistle don't seem a whisker out of place, while Ricky Skaggs points to the Irish and British roots of American country music on the rousing "Cotton-Eyed Joe". Art Garfunkel, Sting, Sinead O'Connor, Joni Mitchell and Elvis Costello are also featured in classic performances with the band, while a brand-new collaboration with Ziggy Marley yields a gorgeous Don-Was-produced rendition of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song". The cliché that there's a bit of the Irish in all of us proves true in this wide-ranging, constantly rewarding and frequently surprising collection. And the tracks on which the Chieftains go it alone are also a gas. --Bob Tarte

If you've ever thought of getting an Irish CD buy this, 22 Feb 2003
Not only does this give you a journey to Irish Isles through 40 years of one of the countries greatest bands but it features a wealth of International Artist with a love of music. You'll get a real Irish flavour from the first track 'March of the King of Ladis', the pipes support Sinead O'Connor on the 2nd track and are followed by a very energetic version of 'I know my love' with the Corrs. The thing about Irish music is that whenever it's played everybody joins in and has a great time and you will do the same listening to this. You'll be beating out the rythym especially to track 4 a right good Cotton Pickin Traditional tune. Joini Mitchell allows you time to recover and contemplate about the Magdalene Sisters in 'The Magdalene Laundries' watch out soon for the film that features the Sisterhood. This version is typical Joini with lovely instumental backing by the boys. One of my favorites features Art Garfunkle and Diana Krall's haunting version of Morning has Broken. This track was recorded, New Year's Day 2000 on the Ocean Explorer 1 just off Deception Island, can you imagine the scene. The final track with Ziggy Marley just goes to show the variety of artists they have joined forces with over the years. I've never seen them live but as they don't seem to be slowing down there's time yet. In the meantime this CD will do nicely.
Enjoyable foot and finger tapping rompt through four decades, 08 Feb 2003
If you haven't got any Irish music then get this and it'll take you through decades of collaborations. The guest list is impressive and you won't stop finger and foot tapping. There's plenty of variety and the sleeve notes put some tracks in a nice historical context. I mean a track recorded on new year's day 2000 on Explorer 1 setting sail from Deception Island with ship mates like Diana Krall and Art Garfunkel, the imagery and sound superb. Journey with them to a typical Irish Pub in Dublin 'Live from Matt Molloy's Pub' To be sure you'll be carried off to the Emerald Isle and upto date with the Corrs. It's pure Guiness sorry Genius, lovely.
Quite enjoyable mixture of the traditional & the eclectic, 24 Dec 2002
A collection that celebrates the Irish group's versatility Reviewer: Neal Clark Reynolds from E. Taunton, MA United States On the one hand, I sure hope that the Chieftains aren't leaving their traditional roots, and on the other hand, I enjoy their explorations of different musical styles. These are all cuts from previous albums, so he who has all of their albums probably won't want this one. For the rest of us, there are some realy outstanding cuts. I especially enjoyed Sinead O'Connor's singing of the traditional "The Foggy Dew". That one's followed by The Corrs and "I Know My Love", another traditional with a fresh twist. Ricky Skaggs joining the group for "Cotton-Eyed Joe" was a real high point, spotlighting the relation of Irish traditional reels and jigs to bluegrass. Joni Mitchell is one of the greats, and hearing her own "The Magdalene Laundries" backed by the group is a real treat. And Van Morrison bares his soul in "Shenandoah", again highlighting the Irish influence on American music. I was a bit disappointed with Diana Krall & Art Garfunkel's "Morning Has Broken", which certainly doesn't compare with Cat Stevens. So you can't win them all. Sting didn't seem appropriate on "Mo Ghile Mear" either. However, I was pleasantly surprised by "Full Of Joy" with the Chinese Ensemble. That's one where it sounded everyone was having fun. And the closing rendition of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" featuring Ziggy Marley was a winner. All in all, if you don't have most of these on other Chieftain albums, you'll want this one

Product Description
New Age diva Enya first became widely known when her 1988 album Watermark sold 4 million copies and launched the single "Orinoco Flow". Her follow-up, Shepherd Moons, was even more successful, selling over 10 million copies despite its slightly lower grade of ethereal enchantment. In 1997 she released Paint the Sky with Stars, an assortment of her best work from these two early albums plus gems from 1995's The Memory of Trees and the soundtrack to the BBC series The Celts. The most melodic and atmospheric examples of Enya's lovely Celtic-flavoured songwriting shine on this disc. Those unfamiliar with the former Clannad member will find charm in such sweet lullabies as "Marble Halls" and "China Roses" while delighting in the more energetic "Book of Days", "Storms in Africa" and "Caribbean Blue". Overall, an outstanding collection from an artist who gives New Age a good name. --Karen Karleski

She looks great on the cover too!I give this five stars simply because it is so relaxing and perhaps her best release for quite a while SUPERB AS EVER., 14 Nov 2008

I must state that I love Enya. I am a forty year old stressed mother of three boys and find her music wonderfully soothing. I love Christmas, too. I bought this on the first day it came out and now feel ready for Christmas. I can see myself baking my mince pies with this on in the background and I can't wait!

THE BEST OF ENYA, 10 Aug 2007
Paint the Sky With Stars: The Best of Enya is an excellent 16-song overview of Enya's career, containing 14 selections from The Celts, Watermark, Shepherd Moon, and The Memory of Trees -- including "Caribbean Blue," "Anywhere Is," "Marble Halls," "Book of Days," and, of course, "Orinoco Flow" -- as well as two previously unreleased songs ("Only If...," "Paint the Sky With Stars") that fit comfortably with her past work. Although Enya is, in many ways, an album artist that creates a mood and sustains it through the course of one disc, this is a fine sampler for listeners who only want the hits and highlights.
Paint the Sky with Five Stars, 19 Feb 2007
The best of of the best from the very best. How better can you get. This is the
"Manchester United" of albums. Every song is like a star player each etched with different skills as per musical composition, ensemble, and memorable lyrics- one of which is my email signature"Ever and always, Always and Ever,Time gave both darkness and dreams to you. Now you can see Spring becomes autumn, leaves become gold, falling from view.
Even if this album were priced at £100, I'd still get it; also one of the few albums, I'd regard as a future heirloom. What's good about it is that you can select any track;Be it Far and Away, China Roses, Storms in Africa etc etc.Too good;I can readily see the 2nd volume of this "Best of" Collection in the near future.
By Far the Brightest Star, 28 Jan 2007
This 16-track compilation is the perfect way to get acquainted with one of the best-selling female entertainers of all time. Paint the Sky with Stars compiles 14 selections; from her debut album (Watermark) to her 1995 output (The Memory of Trees), plus two completely new cuts that sits perfectly well with her old ones. I've always thought of Enya as an album artist, and she mainly is, but she also happens to put out great singles such as the rhythmic flow of "Caribbean Blue," "Anywhere Is" and of course is perhaps biggest hits "Orinoco Flow." This album manages to gather some of her finest moments; from the chanting ballad of "The Celts" to the lilting new cut "Only If." I'm so glad that they included the lovely "Boadicea" and especially the enchanting standard "Marble Halls." All in all, this compilation is the perfect introduction to one of music's finest visionaries. It thrills, but at the same time, keeps you warm.
A brilliant nostalgia hit for me, 25 Jul 2006
I bought this CD in a abit of a nostalgia run, remembering when I had a self-recorded tape of it, and a lonely little girl used to sit and make up intricate fantasy worlds to the tracks on this album.
It's just as fantastic as I remembered, those fantasy worlds are coming right back, and I feel inspired and alive agin. Amazing what some music can do for a girl, huh?
Enyas music is beautiful, ethereal and haunting, ranging from quit dark sounding tracks to delicate creations.
A must for anyone who loves beauty and beautiful voices.

Product Description
Never mind that Van Morrison is one of the most indelible songwriters of the 20th century--take each album on its own terms. On 1968's seminal Astral Weeks, a twentysomething Van Morrison can be found belting his gospelly, bluesy vocals in just as fine a form as he would be 20 years hence. In the sociopolitical context of the times, the album cried out about such ubiquitous 1960s themes as cultural oppression and social upheaval. But it is Morrison's vocal dexterity and passion that maintains such timeless appeal. Take tracks like "Madame George" or "Cyprus Avenue" and you'll find such beautiful mourning, it'll be clear why Sinéad O'Connor once publicly exclaimed: "Van Morrison should be friggin' canonized". --Nick Heil

A must for anyone who loves beauty and beautiful voices.
...and he's Reviving it?, 07 Nov 2008
No, surely not. But yes, Van Morrison is 'reviving' Astral Weeks on stage. He really shouldn't bother.
This album is full of unlistenable blathering. Morrison tries so hard to be 'Poetic' and to sing with 'abandonment'. The result is a dog's dinner.
I'd read about the album's 'Classic' status, and felt I'd been really duped. I won't be a ripped-off concert-goer. Not for this. Next...
Conquered in a Car Seat, 07 Nov 2008
How do you review an album preceded by its own legend?
You do not, you yield helplessly, and, below its totems, meagrely offer libations, askance interpretation of mythology. Perhaps, I should stop at that, because my words can only obfuscate and sully the incommunicable wonders within the song.
If you've not heard Astral Weeks, my initial reaction is to admonish you, but this sentiment is quickly and irresistibly overridden by the power of the truth, which is: I envy you. I found it too young, fourteen and a fool, but it was probably proper. It broke, then rebuilt, then ruined me again at that age, as my adolescent life and loves developed, always in reference to the sounds. They've continued to do so ever since.
This is the only true Soul record, (no disrespect to Marvin Gaye et al), in that it is a man's soul, and nothing less, on wax. A soul with all its varieties and vanities, desires and despairs, its hearkening and heartbreak. Its glory. Its wretchedness.
If an alien race from beyond the skies, without conception of the supernatural, arrived on earth, and was played this, they would immediately decide that this man must have been in communication with the angels. The same will be true for you, for any of us, who are determined to listen 'with' not 'through' our ears! Van says more in series of grunts and groans, or the possessed repetition of four monosyllabic words, than the rest do in their collective careers. Anyone who does not accept this, I disbelieve, not with my word, but with my blood. If you can make it past the second; "I saw you early this mornin'/With your brand new boy and your Cadillac" without falling apart, we do not stand on the same soil, nor beneath a shared sky.
In short, the greatest example of aural (astral, surely?!) art in the last half-century. Hyperbolic subjectivity of the clearest kind, I make no attempts to deny or disguise this, but this is the stirring within my marrow after years of variegated kinship, constant change, that teaches me I must not only react, but act, even if my action is merely not knowing what to do. "I try to do my very best" he says. Heavens! Is this not all any of us wishes we could say and mean? You see, achieving everything demands effort!
Ignore, if you must, my shambolic words, but do not ignore this...this rarest of things, a work of art as good as it is famous.
From Them onwards, cannot hold a note...., 25 Sep 2008
I know that this is a classic, I know that it has sold a zillion copies and that it estblished Van as a "great and as an innovator." I know that everybody has covered "Moondance", probably even The New Christie Minstrels.
In spite of all that, I cannot stand it. I am not concerned that it is very much of its time. I am not concerned that it was the start of endless records of two/three chord bashes. I am not concerned that it encouraged Van to play sax, which is not good. No, my dislike is very black and white - I can't BEAR his voice. It's a yes or no thing, I guess. I am sure that it is deliberate but he cannot seem to hold a note for more than half a beat, and his tone is so harsh. Listen to the middle section of Moondance - it would give an elephant migraine.
When a flatmate played in incessantly when it first came out, those not in favour braced themselves in aticipation of the hard-edged squawks and clipped endings. It was christened "Astral Squeaks" and I cannot think of it as anything else. Also, I know that he is a very private person for one who tours endlessly, but why does he have to cultivate the on-stage persona of bad temper and aggression? You won't see that from Gary Brooker or any of his near-contemporaries, even on the Oirish scene.
I tried again recently becuase my boy is playing a few numbers in a band. No, sorry, it's still unlistenable.
In theory I should love this, 03 Apr 2008
But I don't. It sounds like this music was made in the back of a van (no pun intended) by a bunch of drunks. It rambles all over the place and never gets anywhere for me.
I love this!!!, 02 Apr 2008
I truly love this record. It is one of the few cd's that truly moved me. The passion, the eloquence it truly is poetry brought to life through music.
I think its one of those things that some people just get where as others don't fully understand it. I appreciate that not everyone may love this albumn as much as me but i really feel sorry for those who don't get it, you really are missing out.

She looks great on the cover too!I give this five stars simply because it is so relaxing and perhaps her best release for quite a while SUPERB AS EVER., 14 Nov 2008
