The deluxe edition, 17 Nov 2008
This 2-disc edition, as well as including a DVD, also has one exclusive bonus track that is not on the standard 1-disc edition. This is a new version of Miss You from the Insomniac album and when I say it's a new version, I mean that very literally. It's a duet with French singer Nadiya and the song has been completely re-worked both lyrically and musically. It's a brilliant new interpretation and if you like this then I would recommend tracking down the French release of Tired of Being Sorry (Laisse Le Destin L'Emporter) either as a single or on the French version of Insomniac where Enrique and Nadiya also worked together.
The DVD includes the videos for hits such as Bailamos, Hero, Escape and Do You Know? (The Ping Pong Song) as well as Can You Hear Me which UK fans probably won't have seen as the song was not released over here. There are also live versions of Tired of Being Sorry and Be With You which were recorded on the Belfast leg of the Insomniac tour last year.
I appreciate some people may find it annoying that a second version is released only 2 weeks after the standard album, but personally I think this 2-disc set is well worth having.

Product Description
Rodrigo and Gabriela are two fast-fingered, Dublin-based Mexicans with a unique sound created on acoustic guitars. Their music is difficult to define, straddling both world and rock, and often imbued with the timeless Hispano classical influences. The fire in it comes from their life-long passion for metal music. Rodrigo is a deft finger-picker who can move from raging speed to sensual soul in the space of a fret, while Gabriela employs fast, rhythmic techniques. Her percussionist's thrashing of strings and drumming of the instrument's body inevitably raises comparisons with flamenco which they acknowledge as an influence but swerve as a pigeonhole. The duo's repertoire flies beyond familiar Latin folk guitar styles because of the metal connection: their reworkings of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven and Metallica's Orion are musts, and the presence on "Ixtapa" of the fiery Hungarian gypsy violinist, Roby Lakatos, is inspirational.

amazing, 21 Mar 2008
This is the most thrilling, exciting sound I have heard in ages. What amazing talent and energy! I cannot stop playing it night or day, it is so uplifting.
Even when I am not playing it, the rhythms and melodies keep coming into my head and I find myself nodding, tapping my feet or drumming with my fingers in tempo. The sound quality in general is absolutely superb, however, can anyone explain the small blip of interference between track 2 and 3 ? It only lasts a few seconds but I think this couple deserve perfection in the recording of their performance. I was also a little disappointed in the quality of the DVD production.
In spite of these criticisms I heartily recommend this album and still give it five stars!
This is definitely not Flamenco!, 17 Jan 2008
Rodrigo and Gabriela's self-titled album is lightening, sparky, edge-of-your- seat stuff from the first track to the very last.
Tamacum sets the tone of the album: building tracks from simple chords into multi-layered sprawling showpieces. No expense is spared in this tour de force of acoustic dexterity. Just read the inlay card - every song has a reason, a story.
Rodrigo and Gabriela, spited by rejection from Mexico's top music schools, are deeply influenced by heavy metal bands like Metallica - and it shows, but my favourite tracks on the album are the languid, poignant Saturi and Ixtapa (love the fiddles.)
There is indeed so much panache and spirit going through this - unlike so many acoustic albums there is never a dull moment - the winding intros are just a breath of fresh air but these two have some bite. As we are reminded on the back - We don't play Flamenco.
Blown Away, 11 Dec 2007
I have never reviewed anything on Amazon before but felt compelled to write about these guys. 2 months ago I had never heard of them, but in the space of 2 hours one evening I discovered their version of Stairway to Heaven, bought AND downloaded the album and purchased concert tickets for them. On Sunday night I saw them at the Hammersmith Apollo and was blown away.
As good as the album is it cannot convey the sheer intensity and energy of their music. They had a packed audience eating out of their hands from the first track. A minimalist version of Floyds 'Wish You Were Here' (not on the album) with the crowd roaring the lyrics was thrilling. Some tracks literally built the tension inside me until the glorious final release of energy. Positively orgasmic.
I went with a sceptical friend, who is a music producer and couldn't stop raving about them afterwards. But then I can't imagine anyone not being excited about the talent, muscianship, exuberance and energy of RodGab.
Nice album for the summer!, 29 Oct 2007
In this era of samples and electronic sounds it's nice to hear some decent acoustic sounds! These two can play! It's very song-based; so the solo's are to-the-point.
I don't think this has much to do with flamenco (I hear quite a few camparisons with that music), more with Santana and Al di Meola.
(If you like this album, try some stuff by Paco de Lucia or the Guitar Trio)
Rodrigo Y Gabriela, 20 Oct 2007
This is an outstanding album. I first heard this whilst driving in my uncles car and fell in love straight away. The interplay of the two guitars and the percussive playing are simply incredible. This album is worth it for the first two tracks alone, they are so upbeat and uplifting that you can't help but tap your feet and hands and smile stupidly every time you put the CD on. Considering you get the additional tracks you really feel as if you're being spoiled. Their version of Metallica's 'Orion' is simply brilliant. The only problem with their music is once you hear it you won't be able to get it off of your music system. I feel this is slightly better than their other album 'Re-Foc' which feels more jazzy, and this album comes highly recommended indeed. One word of warning, check out the UK version, it's exactly the same but cheaper!

It is a must buy album. Even if you can't understand Spanish, she has a wonderful voice. It has a contemporary-jazzy sound without losing the traditional Espanic feeling. thanks for readind DaveyT.

Some real gems here. Granted some of the tracks have been released on other compilation records (namely Gilles Peterson's; indeed Forge used to DJ with Gilles back in the eighties; check out their excellent Dingwalls record) but that's because the songs are excellent. There's a nice mix of funk, jazz, folk and soul here that is sure to make your average party goer stand up, take notice, and applaud your unique and well flavoured musical taste.

Please, Please buy this. This is a masterwork of genius. Never have I heard someone with such a deep understanding of what music should be. Jorge is a adpetly at home in so many styles. "America do Norte" and "Trabalhador" are both nods to the influence of North American percussion, both styles fitted effortless into the Jorge plan - sprightly, melodic - this man can make a violin sound funky. "Burguesinha" is a beautiful pop-samba - Jorge's understanding of the transecendent chanted chorus in evidence. This track will have you humming along, tapping your toes. My favourite track is the show-stoppingly brilliant "Mina do Condominio" - the way the lyrics just patter around the passionate chorus with that beautiful mandolin - one of the great tracks you're likely to hear. The change in styles are effortless but so effective. "So no chat," is a brilliant slice of Brazilian rock. "Seu Olhar," stands out - a beautifully atmospheric melody.
Jorge has confirmed his status as perhaps Brazil's premier artist of the moment with this tour de force of music. Buy it

It is a must buy album. Even if you can't understand Spanish, she has a wonderful voice. It has a contemporary-jazzy sound without losing the traditional Espanic feeling. thanks for readind DaveyT.
At this price what's stopping you?, 11 Apr 2007
Some real gems here. Granted some of the tracks have been released on other compilation records (namely Gilles Peterson's; indeed Forge used to DJ with Gilles back in the eighties; check out their excellent Dingwalls record) but that's because the songs are excellent. There's a nice mix of funk, jazz, folk and soul here that is sure to make your average party goer stand up, take notice, and applaud your unique and well flavoured musical taste.
Stunning!, 22 Aug 2008
Buy it
flamenco passion, 29 Jul 2008
i have just recieved this cd and it is wonderful. for the price it is a bargain not to be missed. it is full of life and passion and everything you would expect of true flamenco music. it doesnt matter if this is your first introduction to flamenco or you are a seasoned fan, you will enjoy this album.
"Old School" but a joy to listen to, 17 May 2008
Combining many of flamenco maestro Paco Pena's DECCA LPs to form this greatest hits CD, one can hear clearly hear the style of playing so prominent in the 50s-70s. All the styles represented on the CD are a joy to listen to, especially the less commonly heared ones of today such as Rondena, Milonga and Tiento; and the three Buleria are stunning. As an introduction to "proper" flamenco not the poor quality of Costa Del Sol tablao playing or "flamenco-inspired" guitar playing; Paco's Fabulous Flamenco touches all the buttons and does its job superbly. Highly recommended for all newbies.
Flamenco of a rare quality, 21 Jan 2008
Once, as a teenager, I owned an lp with the first ten tracks of this cd. A guitar novice myself I knew this was the music I desperately wanted to play. Unashamedly festive, these songs, with lots of handclapping, are of a rare quality.
It is quite unusual to find one of flamenco's great masters play pretty folksy tunes like these. Still, ultimately I love this down to earth approach to flamenco more than the more subtle one, like Paco Pena in his later works.
Twenty years on, I can still listen to these tracks every day. Needless to say, I never ever became anything of a virtuoso guitar player myself, not even mastering a decent sevillanas, as performed brilliantly in the second track of this cd.
Atmosphere, melody, drama, mood..........., 17 Dec 2006
Fabulous Flamenco indeed, great value for money and fully worthy of 5 stars.
I brought this CD trying to find my own 'Duende' after reading a book of the same title.
Forget package holiday restaurants and show bars - Uncle Paco is the real deal.
You can almost smell the Paella, taste the Rioja and feel the drama and tension of the moods being displayed. It's somewhat tonally erotic in part with many a Blanco being put through its paces to the beat of the dancer's heart. ( ...and you just know that the dancer in question is a dark haired gypsy girl wearing a red dress, and she's smiling at you - you'll know what I mean when you listen to this.... )
The agility, speed and sheer brilliance of the playing is imposible to describe and difficult to comprehend.
Once you've heard this you'll want to go and see it live. Make sure you do.
Hear it, taste it, feel it ! Comfortably recommended.
the best flamenco cd you can buy , 23 May 2006
I'm someone who plays flamenco and this is a superb collection of flamenco music.Flamenco is poetry and even the names of the various flamenco styles featured here:solea, bulereas, millonga, sevillanas -to name a few - sound poetic. The inlay card gives the history of each piece that is played and a summary of Paco Penas career. You get your money's worth.
Probably the best flamenco cd on the market in terms of broad appeal to lots of different kinds of people - there are more profound recordings by artists such as Juan Martin and John Williams but they are not as light, breezy and full of joy.

I appreciate some people may find it annoying that a second version is released only 2 weeks after the standard album, but personally I think this 2-disc set is well worth having.
amazing, 21 Mar 2008

To save space and time I'll say that Juan Mobili's review of this album is spot on, but I have few things to add. Firstly Lila's live show is excellent. The next time she and her fine band la Misteriosa are on tour do whatever you can to go to see them. The band arrangements are very strong too, beautifully mixing elements of many styles and traditions in a way that perfectly complements Lila's singing. My personal favourite on this disc is Ojo de Culebra, her duet with La Mari of the Spanish nuevo flamenco band Chambao.
Lila Nails It, 28 Sep 2008
I don't know what brought you to check Lila Downs but welcome and thank your lucky stars if this is the first time you get interested in her. If you are interested in great women voices ... better yet in great female artists, this album is proof that you found one the best of her generation. So, If Jenny Lewis blew you away with Rabbit Fur Coat or you love Cat Power in general, this year Lila is the one showing them the way, even if more thyan half of these songs are in Spanish and some of the rhythms may be foreign to you.
Shake Away is probably Downs' best album yet, the sum of everything she's done right all along and more. OF course, Lila is not new to putting out great stuff and singing straight to your heart, it's just that here she does it all.
She rocks the house with her take on Black Magic Woman--along with Raul Midon--and she might just bring to the edge of tears with Lucinda Williams' I Envy The Wind, both in English and Spanish. Also, right up there with these two tracks mentioned, Tierra de Luz with the great Mercedes Sosa and Justicia accompanied by Enrique Bunbury, are standouts. And this is just the brightest diamonds, so to speak.
How refreshing to hear a voice and mind and soul, at the peak of their powers, more interested in material that will challenge her as she redefines it, rather than playing it safe or rely on duets chosen by marketing executives. Definitely, among my short list of great albums of this year.

I heard this album, whilst on holiday in Girona (Spain).
Buy it
flamenco passion, 29 Jul 2008
i have just recieved this cd and it is wonderful. for the price it is a bargain not to be missed. it is full of life and passion and everything you would expect of true flamenco music. it doesnt matter if this is your first introduction to flamenco or you are a seasoned fan, you will enjoy this album.
Best yet !, 09 Nov 2008
Smoky, sensual, wonderful, 04 Sep 2008
I bought this CD on the back of a review in "the Week."
It is a fusion of latin and jazz, and she has the most wonderful husky voice. A joy to listen to!
Salsa for beginners, 29 Sep 2002
Although I really enjoyed the music,I did find a lot of the tracks very fast to keep up with being a complete beginner. You either have to go ultra slow or extremely fast.I found there were only a few tracks that went at the right speed to comfortably practice as a novice. Will keep it for when I'm an expert! If anyone out ther knows of a CD with a more suitable for beginners, please let me know.
Hola Salseros!, 01 Aug 2002
This is a wonderful, upbeat CD for you to practice those moves to and deserves to be in every salsa dancer's collection. There is a good mix of merengue and salsa tracks at different tempos to suit everyone from beginners to advanced dancers and even if you just want to lie back in the summer sun and lef the Cuban vibes wash over you this is perfect background music . For me the highlight of the CD is the wonderful Procura (Knicknamed "Happy Clappy Song' by my salsa teacher). This is a fantastic feel good song that is everything that salsa should be.
value for money, 20 Mar 2001
This CD is great value for money, whilst providing a variety of syles within the music. The tunes can be a little heavy however, myself prefering something a little "happier"! Overall, a must purchase for practicing those moves.
Brilliant Salsa Compilation, 19 Sep 2000
This is one of the best Salsa complilations you can buy. Best record for Salsa is "La Receta" and best for Merengue is "El Tiburon" which always gets me out of my seat to dance. This is real up-to-date Latin music with a regular beat. Excellent, if you're teaching or learning Salsa dance and are bored with old classics or newer commercial records. So if you're not a Salsa music expert and want good music to practice your Latin moves to, you won't take any risks with this CD.
Perfect for Learning, 09 Jun 2000
Hi all amigos,, I listened to this CD and I really recommend it to all salsa teachers/advanced and beginners. It is really fundamental for learning the step in a gently and smooth way. It also penetrated the rythm of salsa in your blood to find your self dancing alone !

I appreciate some people may find it annoying that a second version is released only 2 weeks after the standard album, but personally I think this 2-disc set is well worth having.
amazing, 21 Mar 2008
