The ultimate lights out, chill out album!, 13 Nov 2008
Lullaby: a Beautiful and Soothing Collection of Night Time Songs for Children and Grown Ups
This album calms & promotes sleep for our little girl, who is very, very resistant to sleeping! We play it every night at bedtime & then constantly through the evening to keep her asleep, so the repeat button gets a lot of use! The music compilations have been beautifully created & the music is very relaxing for us too! Even my 7 year old likes the CD. The songs literally get in your head & I find myself humming or singing them during the day! Wish we had found the CD earlier, and would recommend to anyone with young children. Can't wait for the rest of the collection to be available.
My baby loves this and so do I!, 14 Oct 2008
Since I've started playing this music to my 5 month old girl at bedtime, she's been so much easier to settle. As soon as I put it on she quietens down and listens to it, usually getting herself off to sleep without any help from me. I find it quite soothing myself and have fallen asleep listening to it. Most of the songs are fairly easy to sing along to if that's what your baby likes. I don't find the spoken bits annoying, but I don't know why they're included. I would definitely recommend this to other sleep deprived parents.
FAB, 20 Sep 2008
All I can say is WOW! Not only did the music create a lovely bed time routine with some of the songs that I already knew and could sing to, but it totally chilled out my daughter and sent her off to sleep, and I felt relaxed too! This is a must have.
Lovely CD, 13 Sep 2008
Really lovely CD, the singing voice is lovely and my 3 month old son loves it.
Best buy for my baby!, 08 Sep 2008

Product Description
The John Rutter Christmas Album brings together most of the composer's Christmas songs and carols as well as several of his festive choral arrangements, including a rousing "Joy to the World" and the energetic "I saw three ships". Most of the 23 tracks have been taken from extant discs on Rutter's Collegium label although two, "Dormi, Jesu" and "Sans Day carol", were recorded especially for this release. Rutter's first two published compositions, written while he was still a teenager, were Christmas pieces for choir, namely the glorious "Nativity Carol" and the infectious "Shepherd's Pipe Carol". Although very different in character, these two carols (for which Rutter also wrote the test) display the composer's sense of joy and wonder at the Christmas story. More than 30 years later, those sentiments are still there in pieces such as the melting "Dormi, Jesu", commissioned by King's College, Cambridge for the 1999 Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. Under the direction of the composer, the youthful voices of the Cambridge Singers are on sparkling form, as are the City of London Sinfonia and vocal soloists Gerald Finley and Stephen Varcoe. This album deserves to be played over and over--and not just at Christmas. --Rebecca Agnew

Christmas Joy, 07 Mar 2008
I thought this CD had got lost in our recent house move and was delighted when it turned up in one the last boxes to be opened. I immediately rushed to listen again even though it is early March and am once again entranced by the warmth and beauty of the music and the singing. You really can play this CD anytime in the year and that is what I am doing now! If you buy it you will not be disappointed!
WOW - A 'must have' for Christmas, 22 Dec 2007
This CD is just fantastic - be blown away by The Cambridge Singers renditions of John Rutter's Christmas album - the definative version of some of the prettiest and most lyrical Christmas choral music you will ever hear. I just keep playing it over and over again.
Choir members will be inspired to get out their music to re-visit any of these beautiful carols they have sung in the past.
This would make the perfect stocking filler for anyone who appreciates choral singing from a choirboy to your grandmother - or just indulge yourself.
Beautiful CD., 20 Nov 2007
The more technical merits have already been pointed out. I have this on in the background now as its very relaxing. I recommend this as a Christmas treat to yourself, it is like being at an upmarket Carol concert (in a good way!) and when the music stops you find yourself putting it on again and again.
John Rutter's Box of Delights, 26 Dec 2002
This compilation of some of John Rutter's work should be in everyone's Christmas stocking. With sixteen of his own original creations he has added seven arrangements he has made of traditional Christmas music and that written by other composers. What is useful is the grouping of the music into parts - Prologue, The Christmas Story, Christmas Night, Christmas Reflections, Christmas Joy and Epilogue - which allows the listener to select a long or short programme if required. The performances, drawn from sources spanning the years 1985 to 2002, are sheer delight from beginning to end. The Cambridge Singers, with soloists Ruth Holton, Gerald Finlay and Stephen Varcoe, excel with the various moods and rhythms throughout, and the City of London Sinfonia adds stylish and colourful support. The direction of this wonderful festival of music for Christmas is in the capable hands of John Rutter himself who inspires his singers and players. If I were to single out any items from the programme, who could possibly resist the lilting rhythms of `Jesus child' and the `Donkey Carol', and the jaunty bounce of `We wish you a merry Christmas'? On the reflective side, the various lullabies all receive sensitive performances. If you are looking for the perfect combination of joy and reverence, not only at Christmas but at any time of year, you could not possibly rival this CD.

Beautiful, 27 Aug 2008
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! What a great collection for children and amazingly grown ups will love listening too. Beautiful arrangements and the chill out style make it unlike any other nursery rhyme CD I've heard before and a lot easier on the ear for us adults who have to listen along. You might even find yourself listening when the kids are already asleep! I will probably be buying this for anyone I know who has a baby now! Very highly recommended.
Arguably the best CD I own, 21 Jul 2008
We were bought this when our baby was born as a present and it has been indispensable. I have heard it every night for seven months and am still not bored. It is calming and gentle and I now cannot imagine life without it!
Better than the others, 07 Jun 2008
A cd of lullabies that your child is going to enjoy & relax to each night but isn't going to make you jump out the window is a tough challenge. Sophie Barker has done a really good job with this collection. I had to throw away the cd I used with my son but I'm now 18 months into listening to this every day & still smiling.
I would recommend it

Sleepytime Lullabies, 18 Nov 2008
I bought Sleepytime Lullabies for my daughter who has recently had a baby, thinking it would help get him into a good sleep routine. Not only has it worked but his two year old sister responds as well!
The little girl enters into the routine as if it is a game, only to be lulled as the tempo of the music changes into more tranquil songs which induce sleep.Baby, perhaps responding to sound of the heart and womb sounds which he heard so recently, seems to love the gentle, soothing singing.
My daughter says that she and her husbsnd enjoy the evenings to themselves.
Excellent, 29 Oct 2008
Excellent CD really worth the money - it may only be a few songs but thats all that is needed and my daughter is fast asleep well before the CD finishes - it wasnt like that prior to purchasing this! Would highly recommend to any parent.
Deserves a broader audience, 27 Oct 2008
This is obviously a specialised product with a specific purpose, but from the moment you hear Nicola Kerr's extraordinary singing voice you realise these are tracks for everyone, not just children. It's long overdue for this artiste to produce her own solo album and get to the top of the charts where she deserves.
Number one on any grans list, 01 Sep 2008
This delightfull, cd is an absolute must for any carers of small children. I have soothed my grand daughter on her over night stays, and am now buying another copy for my son's newly expected arival.
peace at long last!!!, 27 May 2008
not a typical cd to get a reply from a bloke but we need sleep like the rest!!! my wife had a recommendation that this was a 'wee gem' and got me to order it. We seem to have just got over the baby sleeping stage before our toddler grew out of her nursery and had to be moved to a bigger room with the obvious disturbances. After a few weeks, i'd agree to anything! I can honestly say that after a few songs our daughter is fast asleep for the whole night and even on stressful days when she needs a nap, i just play it in the car for her and it soothes her straight away. Well done and thank you for a happy wife and my footie back!!

This CD is hideous! It is like listening to the worst of Classic FM. Original music turned into 'soft focus slush'. They haven't even kept the original rhythm of the music. Had I had any inkling that it would be like this I wouldn't have bought it. Not recommended, 22 Jun 2006
Not exactly soothing! The music is too forceful and the singers sound like they're competing in X Factor! I'd stick to more traditional albums if I were you Lullaby cd, 09 Mar 2006
Not the greatest cd from an adults point of veiw, but my son absolutely loves this cd. Unfortunately it got scratched but he still wants to listen to it so I am going to buy it again!! A disappointing lullaby collection, 09 Jun 2004
Whilst this collection of lullabies provides a reasonable mix of well-known and lesser-known lullabies, it can be rather monotonous. The accompaniments are all provided by keyboard without any 'real' instruments and so sounds quite synthetic. The singers are often 'over the top', singing as though they are performing a ballad on Pop Idol rather than trying to lull a baby to sleep! A disappointing purchase. A wonderful little bargain, 29 Apr 2003
This CD has almost worn out our CD player - it's been played that many times. My children absolutely love it, and we have it on when they are reading stories before bedtime. There's some beautiful little tunes on there - one or two I didn't know before and now I can't stop singing them! A wonderful little bargain - we've also bought others in the Kootie Bear collection and they're all really good!

I was looking for a cd for my little baby girl-she is 2 months old now when came across this amazing songs. Its such a calming combination that I also enjoy listening to her voice. Recommended for every mum and baby!
I would recommend it Sleepytime Lullabies, 18 Nov 2008
Childrens Bedtime Lullabies, 13 Jan 2007
Good collection., 07 Jun 2008
A nice collection of songs and her voice doesn't grate as some female singers' voices do. I prefer the voice on this collection to albums featuring the voice of Susie Tallman whose voice I find altogether too high to be condsidered really relaxing. I note this says various artists and yet the album features one female voice throughout. Maybe it really is different singers but it doesn't sound like it when listening. I don't know why albums like this don't make it known the singer's name, it seem a little unfair that they have to remain anonymous, especially when the renditions are as nice as this.

I've been playing this cd every day since I was six months pregnant and my son is now six months old, and both of us are still enjoying it, so that's a testament to how good it is. As a musician myself, I'm fussy about what I listen to, but unlike the usual mozart cds, they've gone to an effort to find an interesting choice of (mostly) less well known pieces, which are well-arranged so that there aren't any jarring changes of key from one piece to the next, and most of the performances are really fine, so that the whole effect is, indeed, very, very soothing and soporific. I play this at night and find it very helpful for getting my son off to sleep, but you could also use it as general relaxation music to de-stress to in pregnancy.

Product Description
It's been six years since these same performers got together to create one of the decade's more unusual experiments in musical alchemy. Beginning with the raw materials of early music and modern jazz, the four male voices of the Hilliard Ensemble joined with jazz saxophonist Jan Garbarek to see what would happen when the proper measure of old music and new style were combined, shaped by the performers' considerable experience and collective aesthetic vision. The success of that recording, titled Officium, together with subsequent concert performances, paved the way for this second effort, continuing the performers' search for artistically meaningful, musically satisfying combinations of written music and improvisatory elements. The odd title of the new recording comes from a mystical poem by Friedrich Hölderlin, quoted in the liner notes and accompanied by pictures from Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal. Officium aficionados will notice that Mnemosyne is even more adventurous in its explorations, which range farther and farther from the printed page. Musical fragments and a general outline are the starting points for several pieces. Improvisation is more frequently and freely employed, but always adheres to an agreed stylistic framework. Alongside a Tallis hymn or a chant by Hildegard, we hear Iroquois and Peruvian song fragments, an ancient Greek tune, and a beautiful lullaby by Veljo Tormis. Garbarek's tasteful improvisations are appropriate additions and inspired commentaries. The Hilliards are even better than on Officium; their awareness and sensitivity brings everything together into a truly unified expression that shows the timelessness of music and reminds us that where rhythm, melody, and musical imagination join, different styles, centuries and genres are not necessarily obstacles to compatibility. --David Vernier

Indescribably beautiful!, 23 Jun 2008
I bought this CD and "Officium" some time ago and still marvel at the way the music transports me to another level! My particular favourite is the Tallis track, "O Lord in Thee is all my trust" - it is incredibly haunting and evocative, with the plaintive saxophone melody soaring away, tearing at your soul, and yet so uplifting. Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble really work well together, one complementing the other. I think you either love their musical expressions in these CDs or hate them - there is no in between!

It's always instructive to see a set of ratings for a book/film/piece of music which gains five stars or one, but nothing in between. This CD is one such.
I was appalled to find that three reviewers described this music as "beautiful", and one of these said it was "the most beautiful music I have ever heard".
By contrast, Matt Gear gives it one star, with the comment "utter dross" (well done Matt). Another apt description is "How to Destroy a Magic Moment with a Sax", which was used to post a recital excerpt on a certain well-known music and video site.
In case you are thinking of buying this CD (or any other Hilliard/Garbarek offering), let me warn you how each piece of "music" works:
1 It starts with a few seconds of impeccable singing of some choral classic by the Hilliard Ensemble
2 The sax intrudes with a dreadful impression of how this piece would have sounded if, for example, Tallis had been writing 21st century fusion music, rather than immortal 15th century plainsong
3 Repeat (1) and (2) several times until the end of the piece.
I have nothing against a creative fusion of classical and other music. Several including the Nice, Moody Blues, Procol Harum and Metallica succeeded with rock. Others, e.g. Brubeck and Miles Davis, did the same with jazz.
But the Hilliard/Garbarek collaboration is just rubbish. Thankfully, Classic FM seems to be ending its homage to them.
Do yourself a favour. Leave this well alone, and instead buy some proper Tallis - e.g. one of the many recordings of the wonderful Spem in Alium.
Alternative chillout music for the masses, 21 May 2005
I first heard this CD while listening to Classic FM, and was transfixed whilist listening to the radio in my office. If you are after a relaxing CD, that is different from all the main stream chillout albums that are produced en mass these days then this could be the CD for you. The powerful sound of the saxaphone and the haunting gregorian chants offer the listener a soundscape that is truely out of this world!! Even my Girlfriend who is a keen clubber wanted to listen to this CD after a night of partying...
Utter Dross, 03 Dec 2004
I can't really find the words to describe how truly dire this music is. I'm a huge fan of sacred choral music and the gall of Jan Garbarek leaves me almost speechless. The arrogance of anyone thinking that they can "improve" or "enhance" the music of people such as Thomas Tallis leaves me slack-jawed in disbelief. I'm sure the great Tallis would be spinning in his grave if he heard this. I'm not sure who is worse though. The Hilliard Ensemble strike me as a very good choir, and I would certainly buy any of their other (saxophone-less) CDs, but for them to allow the production of a CD such as this really does seem something of a commercial sell-out, and certainly nothing to do with artistic endeavour. If you want beautiful sacred choral music, buy something buy The Sixteen or the Tallis Scholars. If you want some Jazz Lite there's plenty of groups out there. But this? It's just a marketing ploy. Leave it on the shelf where it belongs.
Incoherent with pleasure, babbling ecstatic praise, 31 Oct 2002
Words fail me to describe this music. I had already heard and loved the first collaboration of the Hilliards and Jan Garbarek, "Officium", and it completely changed my feelings toward sacred music: before listening - no interest whatsoever. After listening - completely hooked, and embarked on a trail that led through the Baltic mystics Part, Tormis and Vasks to early music, requiems, Soeur Marie Kaerouz... Mnemosyne has the same affective power, but it also introduces other, more modern pieces, and the interweaving of the saxes and voices is utterly intoxicating. We're lucky pleasure like this is legal.

I was looking for a cd for my little baby girl-she is 2 months old now when came across this amazing songs. Its such a calming combination that I also enjoy listening to her voice. Recommended for every mum and baby!
I would recommend it Sleepytime Lullabies, 18 Nov 2008
Childrens Bedtime Lullabies, 13 Jan 2007
Still enjoying this cd after nine months of playing, 08 May 2008
I've been playing this cd every day since I was six months pregnant and my son is now six months old, and both of us are still enjoying it, so that's a testament to how good it is.
