Nova Jazza, 21 Oct 2008
It's nice to receive a plesant surprise from time to time. I pre-ordered Jazzanova - Of All The Things Audio CD on Amazon.co.uk about a week ago. It came today, with an FBI warning at the back, guaranteed to be sent from the UK. The long established group from Berlin will officially release their new piece on October 27th. Nice! Half price, btw.
Crystal clear sound, original compositions for each song, exceptional vocals (my favourite is Phonte): all this makes Jazzanova one of the trademarks of German electronic scene and puts them right next to the godfathers OF ALL THE THINGS, Kraftwerk.
The new album is magnificent. If you like Jazzanova, you'll love it. If you don't know them and you like fresh brew of jazz and downtempo music, you'll love it, too.

Product Description
Washington's finest purveyors of hazy downbeat soundscapes have already produced two stoned classics with Sounds from The Thievery H-Fi (4AD) and their DJ Kicks mix on K7! Records. Their latest longplayer walks to the same tempo but with an overall more purposeful musical strut. It's organic for a start, with live vocals and sounds, trading in the slightly sullen slow-mo digi-dub for a more refined and soulful brand of chic. Check the breathless beauty of Marla's voice on "La Monde" and "So Com Voce" as she floats into the spaces left empty on previous Thievery encounters. They manage to wring every half-drop of their main musical influences (dub, soundtracks and bossa) into this beautiful record as it sinks into deep waters, oozing sophistication all the way down. Perfect accompaniment when too spannered to dance, this contains the added bonus of jazzual jungle finale, "Tomorrow" to liven you up from contented slumber just before the CD ends. Sweet like syrup, not chocolate. --Dan Stacey

It is wonderful to have a WHOLE listenable album of amazingly well crafted, chilled, sophisticated music by one group.
I just love this album, Lebanese Blonde is one of the best chill out tunes of all time but there are some other truly great tracks on there. Languidly warm and cool..., 27 Oct 2005
Thievery Corporation lay down the perfect late night CD. Full of warm, atmospheric sounds and super cool vocals it effortlessly switches between electronica, chill out, latin, bossa-nova, eastern raga and even dub without losing the languid vibe that underpins it all and which drives the whole album along. Nothing too challenging and nothing to break the spell, just excellently produced and cleverly designed melodies that provide the perfect backdrop to pure relaxation. They do the harder stuff equally well - check out "DJ Kicks" and "The Cosmic Game" for two of their best examples - but, like all great artists, they know where they're going & what they want here, and they then do it... superbly.

Chuck in a few reggae bass lines, a few snatches of foreign lingo, some lazy keyboards and samples and Rab's yer mother's brother. I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. Boundry busting Gilles girates his Technic for smiley faces...
CD1 foreward thinking house mix, starting out all soulful and vocal, then moving into his more trademark afro sound (with 4/4 this time though), then into jazzy house and deep techno. He gives the middle finger to his dissers that say he can't mix. Ok he's no Louie Vega or Sasha but he does a solid mix here.
CD2 his usual kinda black music gear. Very uplifting though 'think Jackie Brown' soul, jazz, b-boy.
CD3 unmixed exclusive gems, a good variety of house grooves for all you budding jocks out there. Very different and very fresh.
Highly recommended.
Contemporary house meets jazz funk and disco., 07 Apr 2008
With his Back in Brazil and Gilles Peterson in Africa mixes, it seemed like a while since he's really done anything closer to home, and closer to normal dance music trends. There was a lukewarm 2005 house mix for Mixmag magazine, but it's about time Gilles checks in with a superb outing of current house music. Disc 1 is full of funky vocal house and jazzed up selections, which Gilles seems to be an expert at selecting. The mixing runs smoothly, but the one down spot I found on this disc was the Sandy Rivera & Jose Burgos track This Will Change It, which features an incredibly long run of non-stop vocal repetition. At nearly 7 minutes of constant chorus, it really tempts you to hit the skip button. Other than that, this is a very solid house mix, and one of the best I've heard this year.
Disc 2 goes back to the past, with a mix consisting of nearly all 70's tracks. It's a lively jazz funk, soul, and disco mix, with some very interesting choices such as Space Bass by Slick, with it's futuristic lyrics, and the opener, We Gettin' Down, which quite possibly was the inspiration for A Tribe Called Quest's song Award Tour. There's also the well known Disco hit, Boogie Oogie Oogie by A Taste Of Honey.
Disc 3 is a collection of new, exclusive tracks commissioned by Gilles, which feature new house tracks with soulful male and female vocals. There really isn't a dull song on here. It features an interesting Carl Craig remix and a jazzed up Peterson edit of a Louie Vega track.
This 3 disc set well worth the asking price, as you're getting two superb mixes, one of new material, one of old, and one bonus collection of dozen new tracks. With 52 tracks and virtually no duds, this is a near perfect entry in the Defected In the House mix series.
Fantastic!, 21 Mar 2008
The track selection is great on all CD's. First is a funky, soulful journey like house CD's used to be. Choice beats and rhythms. Second jazzy and laid back. Third unmixed but a pleasure to hear. Some Peterson fans may not like it as it's not his usual fare but most will love it.
Amazing, 15 Mar 2008
Gilles is the best selector in the world and this collection is a pure joy to listen to. CD02 is the best of the bunch here.
Buy it quick!
Ignore the doubters, this is class!, 09 Feb 2008
I'll keep this short.
GP knows his stuff whatever the genre and he also has the influence to get some exclusive tracks from those who matter. If you love House Music buy it for CD3 as there's some real quality unmixed tracks. If you love Black Music just buy it.

Product Description
Adding pop savvy to their soul-disco mix, Jamiroquai grabbed the attention of MTV and Top 40 radio and won a Grammy with this platinum-selling album, Travelling Without Moving. It's a fine record, with warm keyboards, sweet strings, and irrepressible grooves grounding Jay Kay's sublime vocals and fuelling the hits "Virtual Insanity", "Cosmic Girl" and the title track. That voice--elastic, jazzy--is the fire of the band, but immaculate guitar sounds, snappy backup vocals and clever old-school soul samples (Eddie Harris on "Alright", Esther Phillips on "High Times") are the details that create perfection. Balancing the dance-ready, radio-friendly tracks are the ballads "Everyday" and "Spend a Lifetime", the reggae-styled "Drifting Along", and a couple of didjeridoo instrumentals.--Suzanne McElfresh

if you grew up in the nineties like me you should definatly remember the cat in the hat jay kay with his funky band jamiroquai.
this was the first jamiroquai album i got and is probably there most recognised for there singles virtual insanity, cosmic girl and alright which i seem to remember getting loads of airplay in the nineties, this album is also the best selling funk album ever and if you dont believe me look it up on wikipedia!
personally i found emergancy on planet earth and the return of the space cowboy alot more funky and acid-jazz related than this album which came after but its still a fantastic album and one of my favourate albums from the band.
This slick album brings a mature string of arrangements, 05 Jul 2007
I remember years ago when I saw the music video for "Virtual Insanity" with its unique special effects and Jay Kay's signature vocal "sound," I had an inkling that it was going to be a good album to listen to. It's definitely a quick pick-me-up! You've got all different kinds of music on it. Reggae, rock, pop, jazz... etc. Whatever kind of music that floats your boat, you'll probably find on this album.
My favorite tracks are "Virtual Insanity" (of COURSE...) "Alright" (just makes you want to dance), "Cosmic Girl," "Traveling Without Moving," "Everyday," and "Drifting Along." I have to admit I'm rarely able to "sit" through the disc in its entirety. It seems to be a work that is three fourths complete with eight of the thirteen cuts exceptional and five being substandard.
Jay Kay really brings a unique style of Jazz mixed with Dance that sends you into a world of groovy romantic fantasy, with mind-fuzzing bass and dreamful lyrics. The flourish of various instruments harmonizing into one beautiful sound is enough to keep you excited once you place this album into your player, other than that 'Travelling without Moving' is good album to have due to it's collaboration.
At the pinnacle of their success and creativity., 06 Dec 2005
Jamroquai have done some great versions of the same album and some not so great. However, this looks set to become their finest hour. Their most well crafted and their most varied album as far as style, grooves, instrumentally and lyrically, but most of all every song has a killer hook and melody. This album sums up what a good song-writing is all about, solid, memorable tunes that never age in their appeal and sheers listenability. Jamiroquai have never quite matched it, well actually few albums have. It is pure pop perfection, up there with Michael and Madonna at their best.
Superfunky..., 26 Feb 2005
I have all of Jamiroquai's albums, but in my opinion, Travelling Without Moving is their best. Practically all of the songs on it are classics, Cosmic Girl being my favourite, partly because of the wicked tune and beat, and partly because every time you listen to it, you're struck by just how much goes into their music- something that I think is true of all Jamiroquai songs. Virtual Insanity, Alright and Everyday also deserve a mention for being similarly catchy and impressive tunes. Use the force and High times call on tribal and reggae influences, while 'Spend a lifetime', one of my favourites, comes as a surprise being the only slow song on the album and distinctly jazzy. Jamiroquai are masters at what they do. I think part of the album's success is that Jamiroquai draw on so many musical influences, that their style is almost impossible to pin down. The tracks on this album lean towards a mixture of jazz, funk and soul remeniscent of the late 70s/ early 80s, they take on Latino and even tribal influences, and add their own unmistakeably funky musical inventions to create their style. Jamiroquai have been criticised for being to 'samey', and admittedly, their style isn't for everyone. But Jamiroquai, if you like funk, have it all, and their music is not just classically funky, it's clever too. Here are proper musicians, making this generation's music famous for being new and different, instead of so many bands' hopeless imitations of former greatness from the 60s, 70s and 80s. A must have for all funk-lovers.
So cool, fantastic & spacy!, 21 Jan 2005
I love Jamiroquai's sound so much, 'cause it made me feel so good & feel like dance at any time. JK's lyrics are truly heartful and wonderful!!! I absolutely agree with the idea of "Virtual Insanity", and I'm kinda wanna be someone's "Cosmic Girl" when I'm listening to it. Needless to say, their whole tunes are so unique and borderless. Here in Japan, they're so popular and people love their songs very much. But I wanna let them know the real meanings of their music, not only its catchy beat but also its strong messages to the audience!

Product Description
In the liner notes to Jamiroquai's debut album, lead singer and mastermind Jason Kay delivers a sincere, if oversimplified, screed about distributing the wealth and saving the rainforests. The lyrics follow suit: except for a single love tune ("Blow Your Mind"), Kay bemoans war, greed, racism, and conformity, or extols the power of music as a drug ("Hooked Up") or as a catalyst for social revolution. This is not Jamiroquai's most eloquent album, nor their strongest musically, what with most songs structured as long-form, open-ended jams weighing in at six minutes or more. Though interesting as a chronicle of Kay's musical vision taking shape, overall it's a document that will appeal most to Deadheads and jam-band fans. --Suzanne McElfresh

I have to admit I'm rarely able to "sit" through the disc in its entirety.
Life force, 26 Feb 2007
A defining album, an album that becomes a part of you and that will stay with you. This album inspired me to learn the bass guitar and I still have a lot of fun playing along.
**THE BEST**, 07 Jan 2006
This is the best album i have ever bought! Every track is fantastic, my favourites being 'Too young to die', 'when you gonna learn', 'if i like it, i do it'. This album has some a super feel good grooves - 'music of the mind' is a excellent making you feel relaxed and calm. A must have! The best jamiroquai album yet/ever in my opinion.
The best funk album ever., 18 May 2005
Its really very simple, this is not only jamiroquais best album and defining piece of work, it is perhaps the best album i have ever heard. It is pure funk and jazz of a genuine nature, none of that electric rubbish from funk oddyseyy, this is real music. This is for the real fans only, if you liked space cowboy (which is also great) then get this as its near perfection.
skater kid makes good, 31 Oct 2004
This album blends great jazz-funk-dance beats with strong lyrics. "White gets 2 and black get 5 years" or "a little boy in hungry and is just a picture in the news". Jamiroquai may have cornered the summer sound CD market but this first album is a little different from anything else they offered after 1993- fresh sounding and original. Im a fan of most of the other music JK has put out but this can be played over and over. Check out rack 6- Emergency on Planet Earth and Revolution 1993.
Jamiroquai first funk odyssey, 04 Feb 2003
One of my favourite albums in my music collection. This is a fusion of funk, soul and acid jazz. Jamiroquai have been around a while, but this is where it all started, in 1993 with the album Emergency On Planet Earth. The theme of the album is basically based on how there is an emergency on the earth, with people starving and the fact that innocent people are dying due to war. The first track "When You Gonna Learn" starts the album off with the clear message -we've got to stop this going on. Its a great track which just oozes funk. The second track is a bit more mellow and its the uk top 10 hit "Too Young To Die". Its just a fantastic track , with a chours i'm sure you all can sing along too "Hooked up" is the thrid track, not as good lyrically as many of the other songs on this album but still a good funky number which will have your feet tapping away. The fourth track "If I Like It I Do It" sound very much like a Brand New Heavies sounding track (a group which Jay Kay went for an audition but was turned down)and the words relate very much to Jay Kays train of thought nowdays - If he likes it - he does it. Track five swaps lyrics about war and worlds hunger for a sublime instrumental - "Music Of The Mind" This track really emphasises that there is more more to Jamiroquai than Jay Kay. The musical arangement is out of this world and you would be hard pressed to find a better instrumental track. Track 6 sees the lyrics about the state of the world return, with the title track "Emergency On Planet Earth". This is very good lyrically with lines such as "I think were standing for injustice - white gets two and black gets five years?" Controversial - and something Jay Kay doesn't seem to shy away from. The 7th track is the weakest on this set. "Whatever it is I just can't stop". Not the worst song in the world but in comparison to the rest of the album it does lack a certain something. Track eight is my personal Favourite on this album - "Blow Your Mind". All 8 minutes of it I love, and it really is a fantastic chill out tune. If you think 8 minutes is a long time on Blow Your Mind then wait till you get to Track 9..... "Revolution 1993" - If your feeling you need a funky lift - this is the song to put on! Fast paced, fast lyrics, and a tune to be embraced... oh yeh and its 10 minutes 17 seconds! Jamiroquai's Digeridoo player Wallis Buchannan makes his debut on track 10 with the short but interesting Didgin' Out. The soulful voice of Jay Kay put together with his and Toby Smiths lyrical genius makes this album something that is lacking during the 90's - Funk. Vinny

Product Description
Jamiroquai have soundly established themselves as a name synonymous with the summer breeze sound they've claimed as their own. Space Cowboy is no exception, as the salsa jazz-fusion buzzes wistfully and harmoniously through every track on the album. Following the path laid out in Emergency On Planet Earth, this second album catapulted the band into stardom and left front man Jay Kay dancing to songs of admiration as the first self-appointed Space Cowboy. The title track epitomises the essence of big band dance music with a funky fresh vibe of feel good energy and toe-tapping excitement. Although the album lacks any big surprises, the definitive Jamiroquai sound captures mind, body and soul, making it difficult for any music lover to ignore. --David Trueman

If you don't know them and you like fresh brew of jazz and downtempo music, you'll love it, too. sublime, 26 Jun 2007
They do the harder stuff equally well - check out "DJ Kicks" and "The Cosmic Game" for two of their best examples - but, like all great artists, they know where they're going & what they want here, and they then do it... superbly.
Unbelievable Mundania, 12 Jul 2004
Welcome to the world of kitsch; a world where as long as you label it 'chill-out' you can get away with any old load of pony. Chuck in a few reggae bass lines, a few snatches of foreign lingo, some lazy keyboards and samples and Rab's yer mother's brother. I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. It is laziness personified. Errrr....you didn't like it then? Nope - a complete waste of money that went straight back on the Used market.
Buy this now!!!!!!!, 01 Jun 2004
Ive got this album and I love it so much. I do like every song. I don't know what song is my favourite because there all good. All I can say is buy this now!
Five Finger discount, 30 Mar 2004
This is a beautifully crafted album from the sublime horns of "Treasures" past the smoking delights of "Lebanese blonde" through to "Tomorrow" and beyond if you want. Sit back, roll up and chill out...it doesn't get much better.
Refreshing aaah !, 07 May 2008
Boundry busting Gilles girates his Technic for smiley faces...
If you love Black Music just buy it.
a very "cosmic" album, 21 Oct 2008
if you grew up in the nineties like me you should definatly remember the cat in the hat jay kay with his funky band jamiroquai.
this was the first jamiroquai album i got and is probably there most recognised for there singles virtual insanity, cosmic girl and alright which i seem to remember getting loads of airplay in the nineties, this album is also the best selling funk album ever and if you dont believe me look it up on wikipedia!
personally i found emergancy on planet earth and the return of the space cowboy alot more funky and acid-jazz related than this album which came after but its still a fantastic album and one of my favourate albums from the band.

The best Jamiroquai album so far, 01 Jul 2006
This is by far the best album Jamiroquai have written. It came at a time when Jamiroquai had it's finest line-up of band members inc Jay, Toby, Wallis & Stuart. This album builds on Emergency On Planet Earth's Acid Jazz vibes and takes it to another level. Many of the tracks are very mellow, but in Scam and Just Another Story we hear some real serious, almost angry, funk. This album also includes perhaps the most classic Jamiroquai track: Space Cowboy, available here in it's full album version glory -far more musically interesting than the somewhat more radio friendly version that was released as a single. This album also includes one of the finest performances of the genre on bass guitar by Stuart Zender. If you are a music lover and like good grooves, funk, or any form of jazz, you owe it to yourself to buy this album.
Jamiroquai at the very best, 04 Jun 2004
Its 2004, and for some reason I have never reviewed this Jamiroquai album. I don't know why as is it perhaps the best out of all five. A musical masterpiece is all I can describe it as. So many different sounds, mixed with some clever and poinent lyrics. The album starts off with "Just Another Story" which is all about lead singer Jay Kay, and his life so far. The line " He was just 17 trying to get on like his dead brother" is one that strikes you straight away. Its musically top notch, with the trumpets blasting, the flute swaying and Kay's voice flowing. Track 2 is "Stillness in Time" which is beautiful track. This was a single back in 94' and the video (although rarly seen on tv) looks as fresh as anything you would see today. "Half The Man" is track 3 and one of the best Jamiroquai tracks of all time in my opinion, defaintly the most overlooked. Lyricall, this song is up there with any 'classic' love song yet radio will not play it. Soulful sound. "Light Years" changes the sound yet again on the 4th track. A great feel good track, which shows yet again to the listener that this album isn't just about one sound as many ingnorant Jamiroquai listeners may think. Track 5, is "Manifest Destiny". A very cool track, and perhaps the most laid back track on the album. "The Kids" is number 6. And the album goes up a notch in the funk stakes. This is just musically fantastic, which fast flowing lyrics. The most upbeat track on here. This track makes buying this album worth it for this one alone!! "Mr Moon" is track 7, and my favourite on this album. Perhaps my favourite Jamiroquai track of all time, along with "Blow Your Mind" from the first album. Not released as a single, which is suprising to me as this has a very catchy chourus and a very funky tune. I urge you when buying this album, to go straight to this track, and listen for a few times. It will not dissapoint. "Scam" (track 8) is one which is a favourite for the old skool Jamiroquai fans. Its actually got most things which are so great about this funk outfit. The old skool disco feel, the lyrics that make you think, the amazing use of different instruments. 'Scam' completes in my opinion the bulk of 3 great tracks on this set - 6,7 and 8. Not a skippable tune among them. Track 10 is an instrumental tune - "Journey to Arnhemland" Every album has a track where your finger cannot stop it self from pressing the skip button. This is this track. Track 10 cannot be called complete instrumental as there are some lyrics, but not many. "Morning Glory" is far superior to "Journey to Arnhemland", but It wouldn't suprise me if some of you were again reaching for the skip button. Very chilled track though and I love it. The final track on the album, you will all be saying "they have saved the best till last". Yes, its "Space Cowboy". This is the original and the best version. There is a decent remix which is the one radio still plays today, but this is the original, emotional, superior version. A song which has a simple theme - Cannibis. Most people know this song and sing the first line of the chorus loudly "This is the return of the space cowboy" and then murmer to themselves as they have never actuallyt listened to what Jay is saying! Basically, as most of you Jamiroquai fans will know, its about the feel good factor of this drug. "Maybe i'm gonna have to get high just to get by" - are the words from My Kay. I wouldn't go along with them myself!! Superb track though, and one for the greatest hits package in a few years time. Overall Return of the Space cowboy is possibly the best Jamiroquai album. The first two sets are always talked about as being "Real Jamiroquai". And with a new album to come out within 5 months, it would be great to see them go back to this style.
A Classic, 18 Oct 2002
I've only just started listening to Jamiroquai again recently, but as soon as I stuck this CD on, all of the good times came flooding back. This is probably the best album Jamiroquai have produced, as there isn't a single track that I skip when I listen to it, unlike tracks such as "Supersonic" etc, which features on "Synkronized". Every track has been masterfully produced by Jay Kay and Co, featuring some of the funkiest basslines ever laid down as well as some ultra-smooth vocals from the main man. The entire album is also complimented by some excellent synth work, which rather than stand out from the other instruments, blend in nicely. Even though I like every track, my particular favourites are: "Just Another Story", the first track and a masterpiece of varied styles, "Mr Moon", a chilled kick-back tune, "Scam", an ultra-energetic dancefloor track and "Space Cowboy", perhaps one of the greatest songs of all time, with amazing singing and instrument/synthesizer music, pure class. So overall, this is one of my favourite albums of all time and if you have only recently started listening to Jamiroquai then get this in!
Classic Jamiroquai, 06 May 2002
I bought this CD from Singapore about 4 years ago, and at first I didnt give it much listening. But as I dusted off the CD about 6 months back as I was talking to a friend about classic songs, I realised how good the album was, and how much I actually knew it. It is probably Jamiroquai's most diverse CD( dont quote me on that, I havent got Emergency on Planet Earth (yet)), including the slow, mellow beats and chilledness of 'Half The Man', 'Morning Glory', 'Manifest Destiny' and 'Space Cowboy' along with the dirty bass of the instrumental 'Journey to Arnhelmland' and then the mid-tempo elevator style music of 'Stillness In Time' which all combines well with the dirty funk of 'Just Another Story' and 'The Kids' and the stand-out, trademark Jamiroquai funky disco tracks 'Light Years','Mr Moon' and 'Scam'. All together this makes for a great CD to listen to. I dont usually like pop-style music, I prefer dance and breakbeat, so im not sure why I like Jamiroquai. Maybe its because I used to love Jamiroquai and never forgot my roots, or maybe its just the fact that their music is great.
THE GROOVIEST AND MOST SATISFYING JAMIROQUAI DISC, 26 Aug 2001
I disagree with the detractors that claim that each Jamiroquai disc is the same as the previous one, they are undoubtedly one of the more consistant acts of recent years, and their body of work stands head and shoulders above most. This, their second album, is my personal favourite. The sound is mellow and languid, certainly Jay's least upbeat offering, yet one that repays with repeated listening. While lacking the big radio hits of his other discs, it includes the classic "Half The Man", the timeless (near)title track, the funked-up "Light Years" and, in my eyes, their best single in the 1995 UK top 10-er "Stillness in Time". If you appreciate the less-poppy side of Jamiroquai, buy this cd!

If you don't know them and you like fresh brew of jazz and downtempo music, you'll love it, too. sublime, 26 Jun 2007
They do the harder stuff equally well - check out "DJ Kicks" and "The Cosmic Game" for two of their best examples - but, like all great artists, they know where they're going & what they want here, and they then do it...
If you love Black Music just buy it.
a very "cosmic" album, 21 Oct 2008
if you grew up in the nineties like me you should definatly remember the cat in the hat jay kay with his funky band jamiroquai.
this was the first jamiroquai album i got and is probably there most recognised for there singles virtual insanity, cosmic girl and alright which i seem to remember getting loads of airplay in the nineties, this album is also the best selling funk album ever and if you dont believe me look it up on wikipedia!
personally i found emergancy on planet earth and the return of the space cowboy alot more funky and acid-jazz related than this album which came after but its still a fantastic album and one of my favourate albums from the band.
Vinny
Classic, 18 Oct 2006
This was always one of my favourite mid-90s albums, but it was more or less overlooked at the time, and even now I don't think Red Snapper have ever been particularly well-known. This is a pity, because Prince Blimey is a superb album. Its organic blend of jazz, funk, ambient and mid-90s break-beats has aged extremely well indeed, and, despite being a predominantly instrumental album, it deserves to be ranked alongside sample-heavy classics of the era such as Exit Planet Dust, Maxinquaye and Endtroducing DJ Shadow.
Despite the fact that the tracks are quite sparse- structured around Ali Friend's throbbing double bass and Richard Thair's stridently funky drumming- the smoky, atmospheric sound is both varied and textured, through the judicious use of samples, as well as touches of sax and slide guitar. In fact, the musical arrangements are extremely subtle, which prevents the music from ever succumbing to the mind-numbing repetitiveness which damns a lot of mid 90s dance music. Furthermore, there is a great deal of stylistic variety. The opener Crusoe Takes a Trip, with its backwards-sounding bassline and frenetic break-beat, tips a nod to the drum'n'bass prevalent at the time, but still sounds distinctively Red Snapper nonetheless through the eerie keyboards and shrill sax breaks. Get Some Sleep Tiger is fast-paced, straight-ahead 50s jazz, whereas Thomas the Fib and Fatboy's Dust slink along like some kind of mutant jazz/hip-hop crossover, propelled by Friend's pizzicato bass playing. Space Sickness is little more than a (superb) drum solo with minimal arrangement, yet it works perfectly. Even the sole vocal track, The Paranoid, avoids sounding like filler. In fact, its one of the album's highlights, through its superb marriage of Anna Haigh's vocal with the strident, darkly funky rhythm laid down once again by Friend and Thair, which is perfectly complemented by touches of keyboard and latin-sounding guitar.
The album finishes strongly too. The Last One is a slightly barmy, odd-ball track which grows on you, but the album's centre-piece is undoubtedly Digging Doctor What What- a subtle, expansive, yet riotously funky number, it sounds like Can updated via the Chemical Brothers- here Ali Friend and Richard Thair seem to vie with one another in order to pump out the funkiest, most frenetic groove possible. Its the kind of track that would fill any dancefloor in seconds. The listener needs a rest after all that, and its provided by the beautiful, ambient Gridlock, which acts as perfect balm to soothe you after the funky excesses of the preceding track. Then, to round off, the stately closer Lo-Beam brings things to a satisfying conclusion.
After this album, Red Snapper would move to a cleaner (and blander) more dance-oriented sound, but its this dark, smoky brand of mutant jazz which they ought to be remembered for.
Warp Records Have Done It Again, 05 Dec 2000
Yet another excellent record produced by warp records ... After havin been amazed with all three Nightmares on Wax albums I searched the dance collections thoroughly to find another group that tickled my ears ... and here they are. Despite not being quite as abstract and chilled as the Nightmares on Wax stuff this cd proved to be a very hard driving relaxing mixture of rythms from start to finish, leaving me looking fowards to settling down with a copy of Making Bones and Our Aim is to Satisfy. Tunes to look out for on the disc are definitely: Lo-Beam & Fatboy's Dust
