A Brilliant Film Score, 26 Apr 2008
I recently listened to my copy of the Braveheart soundtrack and I can say that it is easily one of my favourite film scores that James Horner has composed and I will certainly be purchasing the second album with the DVD. There are many film soundtracks that I plan to buy and even re-buy for James Horner but Braveheart is certainly one that I recommend for people who are unfamiliar with his work as his other best scores are also good but for me the Braveheart music stands out on it's own.
One of the Greats, 30 Mar 2007
Great films, are so often are accompanied by Great soundtracks, in no film is this more true than of Braveheart. This is definently James Horner's Masterpiece, better than Titanic for sure.
My favourite track by far is Betrayal and Desolation(track 13), this is truly one of the most emotional, saddening pieces of music i have ever heard, it conjurs such a mental image of the scene, i can just see wallace's look of true sadness, and the anger and determination as the music builds up tempo and reflects his movement, however even without the mental image, this track conveys unbelieveably strong feelings of sadness, betrayal, true emotion.
My other favoutite tracks are Freedom(part of track 17) and Sons of Scotland(track 9), as another reviewer mentioned, there is quite a bit of repetition of the gift of a thistle, but it dosent really take anything away from the soundtrack as its a great theme anyway. Very consistent and hugely pleasing soundtrack.
Simply Beautiful!, 03 Nov 2006
This is just stunning music, beautiful and haunting.
I love music like this, it uplifts the spirit & mkes you want to cry at the same time.
I loved the film, i love the location & i love the history that belongs to it all.
This kind of well made music never goes out of style.
Haunting......., 24 Aug 2004
i don't know about anyone else but i can't listen to this music without coming close to tears, it soothing but haunting at the same time, and somehow it also fills me with hope. nothing else could compliment such an emotionally powerful film such as braveheart in such a fantastic way is this soundtrack has. if you liked braveheart, if you wish for music that is soothing and inspiring, look no further
One for anybody, 19 Feb 2004
This soundtrack never tires, with excellent authentic cultural music from Scotland. This soundtrack always takes me where I want to go, and back to the inspiring story that is Braveheart. The bagpipe tunes are absolutely heart-wrenching, and always give me goosebumps. I hardly ever feel that the music is just a fill-in like so many other soundtracks which are just backing tracks. This soundtrack is more than a backing, and of course it is what takes us to the Highlands in this film. Anybody who is interested in cultural music and enjoys beautiful Scottish traditional sounds must get this. I give it my complete confidence.

I have never been into classical music, however the TV programs Maestro and Last Choir standing (I know trash TV... sorry) made me realise I did like some classical music. So time to test that theory, and of course this CD fitted the bill perfectly, a bit of everything and 99% you will probably know. Good album, maybe I may have discovered culture :-) Open the wine, wind up the volume, 15 Oct 2005
A fantastic selection of all the tunes you've ever said "Oh.. that's the tune from the ....advert, isn't it? What's it called?" about. OK that's a very trite comment, but you get my point. Pure enjoyment, without the intervention of the tracks in a single classical album which you have to pretend to appreciate if you're not to look like a Philistine. An absolute belter..an education, and a gateway to composers you'd never heard of, (neither had I).
Classical for beginers...., 31 Mar 2005
Not a bad way to relax in the bath and listen to some lovely mellow music-But it is not for the advanced classical fan.Everyone else would love it.The film theme tunes are abit cheesy....
Fine selection, but you may get better value elsewhere, 01 Jan 2005
There are many classical music samplers on the market, some better than others. Since Classic FM started running its various charts, the record industry has been able to cherry pick the most popular tunes! There is a lot on offer on these four CD's, but ask yourself what you hope to get. There are, as I say, a lot of samplers on the market, and this is one of the more expensive box sets. You may feel this package may not offer you the best value for money - (see my review of "The Essential Classics Collection" - ASIN: B000038I67). Here, well, you do get a broad, eclectic range of the more popular classics. Of course, what you get is a selection of the highlights from classic works - one of Pachabel's best loved melodies, one of Orff's more dramatic moments, and these CD's seem to contain quite a lot of Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. This sampler is largely restricted to the more melodic tunes. I do like to have some background music playing when I'm reading or writing, and this collection provides an adequate supply. The four CD's, here, will give you a lot of very enjoyable music which you can have playing while you relax or concentrate on some task. But if, like me, you're trying to learn a bit more about classical music, if you're prepared to experiment and listen a bit more widely, the real joy of a selection like this is that it should give you the confidence to delve deeper. There is so much pretension in the music world, if you have little musical knowledge to begin with, it can be a bit daunting trying to explore the mysteries of the classics. My advice is to ignore all the hype and all the flowery language. Allow yourself to sit back and listen to these tracks, then take yourself out and listen to the longer, full versions of your favourites. Let your ear be your guide - maybe have a listen to Radio 3 instead of Classic FM (the BBC plays a much broader range and you're not constantly interrupted by adverts)! This is an entertaining selection ... but there are better value options on the market (i.e., ones which offer more tracks for less money), and you may feel it is worthwhile looking to see which tracks the respective selections offer.
New to classical? Start here..., 13 Dec 2004
Of course, if you really want to hear the best classical music ever you'd need to get a set lasting a couple of weeks, at least. This is a fair effort mind, with four discs lasting over five hours; and it does a decent job of gathering together most classical pieces that have found a way into mainstream culture over the last twenty years, and splitting the sides into categories is helpful for the casual listener (Relaxing/Uplifting/Cinema/Spectacular). This collection is clearly aimed at anyone who knows 'Air on the G String' as 'the Hamlet Cigars tune' or Handel's 'Hallelujah Chorus' as 'the Messiah Theme', but there's nothing wrong with that. Also, including pieces by modern artists like Michael Nyman, Ennio Morricone and Brian Eno proves that this music has a relevant place outside of the museum.

My knowledge of classical music is not so advanced, but it is a breed of music you must learn to appreciate if you get what I mean. I am to keen to expand my knowledge of classical music, so buying this album is a great starting point. Classical music is a breed of music which existed long time ago and is really old fashioned, but a real pleasure to listen to. It is very much instrumental orientated. You can hear the piano, violin or the flute with their distinctive sounds in the background.
The Most Relaxing Classical Music in the World is an excellent album featuring and honouring the talents of all the major acts to embrace their names in classical music combined in four CDs. Remember The Four Seasons, Fantasia, Concerto For Two Mandolins and other famous acts. There are certain feelings conveyed whilst listening to each track. It feels like you are in the countryside, with a peaceful setting escaping from the urban jungle (literally means city jungle, with all the traffic).
If you love classical music, then purchase this album. Classical music is specialist, but something different from normal kind of music, you are most likely to listen in your daily lives. It makes a refreshing change from it.

Product Description
The title, Bryn Sings Popular Classics tells it all. Here is one popular classic after another--some folk or traditional, some operatic, some religious or inspirational, some pop. The result in the throat/mind/sensibility of any other singer might be soupy, sappy or simply uninteresting, but Bryn Terfel--he of the rolling bass-baritone voice who can smoothly deliver notes and phrases at any dynamic level--turns this generous, somewhat sentimental recital into something beautiful and special. After a rousing "Toreador Song" from Carmen, sung with just the right weight (most baritones find it too low, most basses too high) comes a ravishing version of "Shenandoah"; a fine Welsh song is followed by the stunning duet from Bizet's The Pearl Fishers, with Andrea Bocelli singing the tenor part gleamingly and Terfel considerately underplaying his hand. And so it continues through Brahms' Lullaby and Schubert's Ave Maria, the "Love Theme from Titanic" (sung with great restraint), renditions of "Danny Boy" and "Home Sweet Home" that are just beautiful, the spirituals "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and "At the River" (slightly anachronistic but still effective), the gluey "If I Can Help Somebody", and a few more. It's amazing that Terfel can bring such variety to material that is temperamentally so similar. Some of the arrangements are a bit sticky and overdone, but overall, this disc is a beauty for all seasons. It will make a lovely gift to music lovers of all types. --Robert Levine

Best of Bryn (original version), 05 Jun 2008
There are two versions of this album, this single disc release and a `special edition' 2CD set.
It makes a change to hear a collection of familiar music sung by a baritone rather than the more popular tenor and Bryn fans should be pleased with the selection of music, it's a good range of styles, with the emphasis on classical and opera excerpts plus a few traditional folk style songs. Bryn's voice works well on the opera favourites like Bizet's Toreador song (lots of rolling r's here) and sounds good with Andrea Bocelli on The Pearl Fishers duet `Au Fond du temple saint'. The folk songs and traditional like `Swing Low, Sweet Chariot' and `Danny Boy' are well suited to the deep baritone voice, and the `Ave Maria' duet with Sissel is an unusual pairing which I really think works well.
One choice I think doesn't work, simply because the music is more suited to a female voice, is James Horner's `Titanic' film theme and just doesn't come close to the emotional Celine Dion version. `The Lord is my Shepherd' is a version of the popular hymn and `Goin' Home' is a nice transcription of Dvorak's symphony No. 9.
Harpist Catrin Finch plays on `Bugeilio'r Gwenith Gwyn' and the London Symphony Orchestra provide the orchestral backing.
I would probably recommend the 2 disc version of this album for its lovely rendition of the Christmas carol `Oh, Come all ye Faithfull' plus a few other pleasant traditional folk songs included on the bonus CD.
The sleeve notes provide a few notes on the tracks plus lyrics where needed. As an introduction or a `best of' Bryn Terfel this is a good choice.
Wonderful singer and lovly music, 09 Apr 2007
i was really sad when my grandad past away and this album was bought by my grandad and couple of the songs on this album was played and it made me and my nan thing of the good times and the bad times weve had and my grandad is home grow from pontyprith in wales and when we had the funeral the songs played was Goin' Home, Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, danny boy, Home Sweet Home and all these song have a huge effect on me and my family the reason we choose these songs they all had a meaning for our dearly beloved grandad husband and dad and great grandad truly missed willam john hibbert thanks bryn your songs hold alot of memorys for me and my family thanks again
Wonderful singer - Bryn, 26 Nov 2004
Why have I decided to write a review of this CD? Well, I have found such happiness and peace listening to this music, I wanted to let anyone out there know it is a wonderful CD. The song "The Lord is my Shepherd" on this CD is a lovely version, with a great choir singing in the background. Sometimes this makes me cry, sometimes it raises me up - I would recommend anyone who has not heard this, to give it a go - it is so uplifting and joyous. Bryn is a fabulous singer, he puts real feeling into his songs! Good man!
The Welsh Hills Are Alive, 01 Nov 2004
Bryn Terfel, what a fantastic pair of lungs this grand Welshman has and I'm a relatively new fan, as I only discovered Bryn's booming timbre a couple of years ago. He sings with great passion, very "POWERFUL" delivery but also can be extremely gentle. This is how a baritone should sound and I'm not all surpised to see Wales has again produced a singing son to be proud of. I enjoyed all the tracks on this particular CD and feel Bryn Terfel is comfortable singing in many different meduims from Verdi to Show stoppers. A classic voice and a welcome addition to my collection of CD's.
Bryn Rocks!!!!, 09 Dec 2003
As a die hard classical fan i feel this album is a real compliment to Bryn. His heavenly voice mixed with such beautiful composistions is a must have album for christmas to relax you around the busy festive season. And as usual he is giving credit to the composers with his great talent. I highly recommend this album to any classical lovers such as myself

Haunting......., 24 Aug 2004
i don't know about anyone else but i can't listen to this music without coming close to tears, it soothing but haunting at the same time, and somehow it also fills me with hope. nothing else could compliment such an emotionally powerful film such as braveheart in such a fantastic way is this soundtrack has. if you liked braveheart, if you wish for music that is soothing and inspiring, look no further One for anybody, 19 Feb 2004
Good classical introduction , 22 Oct 2008
If you love classical music, then buy this album, 03 Oct 2006
Disappointed, 30 Jun 2008
I wish I had paid more heed to the only 1 star rating by 'a customer'. I too was very disappointed by this CD. I had expected full on concert style piano playing, instead of which I got 'one finger' style playing, very popular with the masses, but not very deep. If you like Clayderman, this may well please you.
great treat!! , 30 Jan 2008
This album is on my itunes every day now at work because it is so relaxing & peaceful, I have many hundreds of choices on my itunes yet every day go back to this one again & again, if you are classically trained & looking to find something wrong then perhaps you would BUT I have found it really enjoyable & its my 1st choice every day & i'm still not fed up of hearing it!! you will love it :)
Excellent way to get hooked on classical music, 08 Apr 2006
For many years, I found it hard to stick to classical music listening. But through this Pop version of classical music, I got hooked. I played it over and over again! At first play, I was disappointed because it sounds so different from normal versions. Memory of original versions play tricks in the brain. It felt like some of the tunes have been murdered. But a few plays later, it started to sound right, and it grew and grew on me. Pop Classical is the future of Classical Music! Classics is fantastic.
A Fantastic CD!!!!, 23 Dec 2005
This is a great CD, with a great blended mix of classical and hip tunes, ideal for any young classical listeners or movie fans, A lovely CD!!! I particularly enjoyed her version of Krwlng, a fantastic piece. This is a very innovative CD, very unlike the kind of work she has previously done, very impressive!!!
Dont be fooled, 08 Nov 2004
I listened to this album not long ago and was thoroughly disappointed with myleene's attempt to play some of the greatest piano pieces of all time. For an untrained ear they might sound impressive but if anyone has heard the originals they will notice instantly that her adaptions aren't half as good. In particular i was horrified at Toccata and Fugue where the same segment of music was played over and over repetitively. One of Bach's greatest works was reduced to a cacophony of noise, not unlike chopsticks. If you wish to listen to the pieces on this album, i suggest you get a cd which shows them in their full glory and as the masterpieces they truly are.

Product Description
The 1997 Academy Award winner for Best Dramatic Score, James Horner's Titanic was the first soundtrack to reach the No. 1 slot on the Billboard charts in two decades; it also seemed to rival the Big Mac in sales for the year. And what can we say about Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On"; would "ubiquitous" suffice? Horner's combination of synths, chorale, and orchestra perfectly underscores the action in director James Cameron's 20th-century melodrama. It's a finely honed piece of Hollywood craftsmanship from a composer who has tackled more musically adventuresome projects in his career. FYI: Horner's follow-up to Titanic was the score for a different disaster: Deep Impact. --Jerry McCulley

Overrated, 21 Jul 2006
Like the film, Horner's Oscar winning score has it's moments. 'Never an Absolution' is marvellous, 'Unable to Stay, Unwilling to Leave' is OK (once you get past the irritating Chariots of Fire-esque effects) and that's it really. Much of the score is ruined by Horner's insistence on choosing instrumentation rooted in the story over what would work better.
Southampton for instance is spoilt by annoying synthesised choirs. The composers reason for this was apparently to give the film a contemporary feel, unfortunately it just grates, particularly when you realise how well-written the rest of the instrumentation is. The action cues are fine, but nothing mind-blowing. 'My Heart Will Go On,' performed by the ever-irritating Celine Dion, is utterly over-hyped. And finally when you think it's all over you get yet another reworking of the film's theme, which lovely first time and utterly irritating the fifteenth.
Titanic, like the bland film it came from, inexplicably won awards all over the shop, over much better competition (Elfman's 'Good Will Hunting' and Goldsmith's 'L.A. Confidential'). I suppose if you particularly liked the film it could be worth it, but otherwise avoid like the plague. Or an iceberg.
Another one for soundtrack lovers..., 19 Feb 2004
This is another brilliant soundtrack composed by James Horner, as is Braveheart. Once again I enjoyed listening to this very much, but perhaps it is a little less atmospheric than Braveheart. I think there is a little less to create with music in this film, and some of it it definitely filling. I am not a fan of synthesized sounds so if you are like me this is NOT for you. Much of this soundtrack is synthesized and that just isn't for some people. However, the main theme is one which almost everybody knows and should not be missed. Overall, quite a successful soundtrack, not so much a successful piece of music.
WHO NEEDS THE SEA TO KEEP TITANIC AFLOAT, 04 Sep 2003
Well James horner has produced a wonderfull score which captures the drama and the majesty of story of titanic, the music tells it's own story as we watch and remember those who lost their lives in this maritime disaster. this soundtrack has many great highlights, DISTANT MEMORIES, SOUTHAMPTON, ROSE, LEAVING PORT, HARD TO STARBOARD AND HYMN TO THE SEA. for those who love horners music this is a great score to have, i play this cd all time, it's wonderfull.
The most listened to CD I have ever bought, 30 Jan 2002
I bought this when the film came out and all I can say is thank God it is not an audio cassette or it would have worn out by now. Whilst every track is fantastic the best are the haunting "Rose", "The Sinking" (fantastic violin playing) and the "Death of Titanic" - haunting and robust. The score runs in much the order of the film so you can imagine the scenes in the correct order when listening to it. The only (small) critisim I have is that "A Building Panic" from Horner's follow-up "Return to Titanic" was not included here between tracks 8 and 9. Otherwise, if you're one of the very few who doesn't own this CD yet, go out and buy it. It should be in your collection.
One of the most intelligent dramatic scores in existence, 19 Mar 2001
The panoply of emotions that this soundtrack conveys is something of a 20th century feat in film music. From the deeply mechanical movements of the ship to the woeful outpourings of its doomed passengers, Horner manages to play an important role in our suspension of disbelief as viewers. If any one composer has made moviegoers feel more empathy towards characters and strikingly conveyed the grandeur of the mother of all moving objects then it is Horner. What is most intelligent with this soundtrack though is his inherent ability to blend the most authentic music of the time with the modern. To understand the size of achievement here we can't say that we have something bigger than John Wiliiams's Star Wars or ET which revolutionised our viewing of modern film, but we can say that it comes pretty near, especially when we look at the technological blending of music that Horner manages to so convincingly and satisfyingly manipulate. Music can extend the emotional and psychological range of characters and envelop and involve audiences in ways nothing else in movies can, and with this soundtrack Horner has done it perfectly.

Haunting......., 24 Aug 2004
i don't know about anyone else but i can't listen to this music without coming close to tears, it soothing but haunting at the same time, and somehow it also fills me with hope. nothing else could compliment such an emotionally powerful film such as braveheart in such a fantastic way is this soundtrack has. if you liked braveheart, if you wish for music that is soothing and inspiring, look no further One for anybody, 19 Feb 2004
Good classical introduction , 22 Oct 2008
If you love classical music, then buy this album, 03 Oct 2006
It should be in your collection.

classic flicks, 17 Nov 2003
I recently listened to the music on the box set being played by the London Royal philharmonic orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall in London and immediately loved the music and bought the c.d box set. All the themes from the films are played brilliantly with a real joyous sound to them. The themes that I had seen the films to I think I enjoyed the most as I already new them yet hearing them being played by such a good orchestra really makes the c.d worth listening to. There is not a single bad track on the c.d and one of my particular favourites was 'the great escape' which really made me smile. This album is a must buy for anyone who enjoys film theme tunes or anyone who likes listening to an orchestra as talented as this. 5 stars!

Product Description
Unlike Back To Titanic, this sequel album tries to tell a complete story, drawing in large amounts of external material "to keep the spirit of William Wallace ... alive, and to further enhance your listening pleasure". That actually means five tracks of traditional bagpipe music (totalling 17 minutes of the running time), that have nothing to do with the film. There are also numerous cuts of dialogue. Genuine fans of the movie and score will no doubt be delighted by the whole concept of this album. Anyone simply looking for more of James Horner's music will be disappointed. "Scottish Wedding Music" is a nice enough background jig, but the remaining pieces are really reprises of material on the original soundtrack--from which there are also plenty of cues copied across. --Paul Tonks
