Product Description
Top Gun (1986) must be counted one of the most influential movies of the 1980s. It propelled Tom Cruise to superstar status, and jetted director Tony (True Romance, 1994; Enemy of the State, 1998) Scott's career into the stratosphere. It also allowed producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer to perfect their multiplex-friendly blockbuster formula of join-the-dots plot, MTV-inspired visuals and rapid-fire action. Not least, it all but invented the modern pop soundtrack. Certainly it was the success of Simon and Garfunkel's The Graduate (1967) which inspired many song soundtracks in the pre-Star Wars (1977) decade, but since Top Gun, soundtrack pop has been gunning for the top like never before. Two singles dominate the album, Berlin's massive hit, "Take My Breath Away", and Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone", both co-written by Giorgio Moroder, who also scored Midnight Express (1978) and penned Blondie's "Call Me" from American Gigolo (1980). Most of the remainder is up-beat, energetic American AOR stadium pop-rock by bands like Cheap Trick and Loverboy, huge names at the time of the film's release. Rounding out the collection is the electro-instrumental "Top Gun Anthem" by Harold Faltermeyer, the man behind "The Heat Is On" from Simpson and Bruckheimer's previous box-office bonanza, Beverly Hills Cop (1984). All in all, a landmark soundtrack. --Gary S. Dalkin

Top Fun, 20 Jul 2006
Classic soundtrack. This album has everything. Kenny Loggins establishes himself as the master of powerful, catchy 80s cheese with the immense Danger Zone and fun-as-you-like Playing With The Boys. Berlin's Take My Breath Away is possibly THE greatest ballad of all time. Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem is about as moving a piece of music can be. A must have.
Top Gun....Top Album, 05 Jun 2006

The songs on this extended soundtrack showcase not only the famous tracks ( eg Berlin , Kenny Loggins ) , but have also added in ( for the deluxe edition ) the original Righteous Brothers version of "..Lovin' Feeling" amongst other tracks . Upon listening to the album again , I felt right back in the 80's ( for some people a good thing , for others a bad one ! ) and I realise that the tracks on this album really do seem to signify that whole time in music and I can just see the shoulder pads , shiny suits , ripped jeans , peroxide hairdo's ....etc For those of a more musical nature , the instrumental Top Gun Anthem by Harold 'Axel F' Faltemeyer and Steve Stevens ( guitarist with Billy Idol ) features some cracking soloing !

Very good, just too outdated, 19 Oct 2001
..and I'd stand by that comment, through and through. This is a good album, catchy and well worth listening to. The music's rhythmic and dancy, the tracks are actually featured in the film, and the lyrics are ones to sing along to. There are tracks you'll recognise - Glenn Frey and The Heat Is On; the Axel F synth theme itself - and tracks you'll know to have become famous having been in the movie. But there lies the problem. They would have been chart releases nearly twenty years ago. We'd have danced to them and heard them on the radio - back in 1984. These would have been great songs to own, if you'd been buying them at the time vinyl was in its prime. But as it is, if you purchase this CD now, you'll be paying however much for songs that would have disappeared a long time ago. And that might prove a problem. Not that it honestly matters, though. There are decent tracks on this album, and that's the main thing. And if you an Eighties freak, this soundtrack might be the highlight of your collection (however sad that might be). I suppose it all boils down to one thing: watch the film, listen to the music, and see whether you like it. Nothing else can help you make a decision, not this review, not the promotional stuff on this website. And hey, when it comes right down to it, it's only a few pounds right? Most albums end up sitting on the shelf, anyway.
worthwhile, 12 Oct 2000
"Beverly Hills Cop" was the movie that thrust Eddie Murphy into the big time and not only is the movie fast paced, but so is the soundtrack which mainly features an uptempo dance style. The album includes danceable r and b tracks such as "Neutron Dance" by the Pointer Sisters, "New Attitude" by Patti Labelle, "The Heat Is On" by Glenn Frey, "Don't Get Stopped In Beverly Hills" by Shalamar as well as the movie's theme (and one of the most recognisable themes of all time) the brilliant "Axel F" by Harold Faltemeyer. Both the movie and the soundtrack were incredibly successful and it's not hard to see why, as after one listen you'll be glad you bought the album. Thankfully there are no Eddie Murphy tracks here and you will probably remember the movie and what a great feel the songs in the movie gave it, well all those songs are included here and if you liked the music that played throughout the movie there is no doubt you will enjoy the album. This album is simply one of the best soundtrack albums of all time and is a must buy.
