quincy jones has worked with some legends in his time ray charles, duke ellington, dinah washington, frank sinatra, michael jackson he is a fab talent in his own right!! walking into space was good and of course he worked with duke ellington and frank sinatra on an album way back and he was good mates with ray charles!! here we have anouther rod temperton classic aswell as thriller, off the wall, and he worked on the karen carpenters only solo album wow karen carpenter what a voice!! buy this album its fab!! I bought 'The Dude' as an audio tape when it first came out and it travelled the world with me when I went on holiday. Absolutely amazing sounds when chillin' around the pool. If you've ever been in a relationship it's impossible to listen to the words of 'Just Once' and not empathise. I still have the tape (cover faded with the sun) but bought the CD when that came out and continue to get as much pleasure from listening to it as I did in the 80's. If you haven't got it in your collection and you're a lover of perfection then I urge you to buy it! Listen to the words, 30 Jul 2007
This album takes me back to pre exams, my dad bought it for me and my friend and I played it all summer long when the sun shone in summer holidays! Am I getting old. 'Betcha wouldn't hurt me' did not get very far, but listen to the words, '100 Ways' is just lovely and we can all dance and sing to 'razzamatazz' and 'Ai no corrida'. Smooth album witha bit of Jazz I have to say it is one of my favourites but that maybe because I associate with happy memories, so why not buy it close your eyes and share with me. QJ wrote and produced for the old Michael Jackson when he was recognisable! My favourite is 'JUST ONCE' If you liked 'Off the Wall' you'll love this, even though not as fast. The guy's a genius...just buy it!!! Up there Amongst The Best, 10 Jul 2006
Basically with the same team that gave us Give Me The Night and Off The Wall this is a standout in several simultaneous areas which makes the entirerty such a great album: the songwriting from Rod Temperton; the session guys have from Off The Wall who all got their own jazz fusion contracts/careers; Quincys production and an amazing array of vocaltalent interpreting the songs. To some this might sound a bit overproduced - I can understand that, but for anyone growing up at the time this came out and listened to it then, this was as good as it got.
Sublime arrangements, not a bad track on the album. If I had to pick my favourites I would choose Velas, Ai No Corrida & Something Special, but really you can't go wrong.
At £6.00 - Snap this up!! Simply Fantastic, 25 Jan 2005
I couldn't agree more with Rebecca's review. The Dude is a supremely sublime album, the production is flawless and of course features that smooth sound that Q is so famous for. Q and Bruce Swedien developed a process which they called "acusonic" and this is the process that gives us that silky tone that we also hear with all of Q's later work. Well, what about the songs, for me the best song on the entire album is Just Once, a song so powerfully moving that even now after some 24 years I feel my hairs stand on end. This was the album that gave us James Ingram and boy what a voice, One Hundred Ways as Rebecca pointed out is about the essence of true romance (the way it was meant to be, I guess), another beautiful song. Something Special is also superb with the wonderful Patti Austin. The jazzier tunes, Razzamatazz, Ai No Corrida, Betch You Wouldn't Hurt Me (written by Stevie Wonder) are also top notch. I have played this album, first on Vinyl way back in 1981 maybe 200 times or more and I simply never tire of it. I guess another reason why this album means so much to me is that I was with someone very special at the time of it's release so I will always remember it by that too. I believe that this album was/is the most nominated in Grammy History. Bravo Q, for me this is best album from you.

The Best Hallelujah Chorus EVER!, 18 Dec 2008
This is the best version of the Hallelujah Chorus EVER! The first time I heard it on MTV or somewhere years ago I nearly fell out of my chair. It still affects me emotionally to the point where I start crying. IT WILL KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF, even if you aren't religious - and I'm an atheist. But the SINGING!!! As a former singer, I am blown away by this.
Heavenly Messiah!!, 24 Oct 2005
This is a GREAT Messiah!! Get it and be lifted! :-) Featuring Stevie Wonder and other fab singers. The Ev'ry Valley and Rejoyce "arias" is the best! Raw and full of emotions! Its a shame they didnt record the whole Messiah!! A real GEM!!
Get it for the Singing, 09 Dec 2002
This is a VOCAL album. Some of the soundtracks sound a little arificial, but this is such a MONSTER work - it would cost a fortune and a year to arrange and record it all with musicians to match the vocals. The Voices are AMAZING, and the groove on many of the tracks more than makes up for any weak parts. What is really impressive is that if you are broad enough to know your classics and your soul, you will appreciate how Handel's work has been mapped into the soul genre. Clever! As for the Tour de Force, the "Hallelujah Chorus", it is just how church should be on a Sunday morning. A Truly Uplifting Groove. Yes, I recommend it!
Brilliant - different - and such enthusiasm!, 09 Apr 2001
Something very different - those familiar with the classical choral "Messiah" may not at first relate to this upbeat, but so enthuasistic version. It gets you going - sing-along-aHandel.. - with the vibrancy of and depth of singing of the gospel choirs and soloists. Try it!

Product Description
Even when he was a full-time jazz cat, Quincy Jones always had an ear for the pop aesthetic. This 1962 record does contain a good bit of, how you say, queijo in its unsubtle arrangements, but it is for the most part an accessible, entertaining, and bubbly affair. And with musicians of the calibre of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Paul Gonsalves, Clark Terry, Jim Hall (who can't help but be tasteful), and Phil Woods all contributing ideas, a baseline quality is assured. Most significantly, Jones goes beyond the expected Jobim and Bonfa cuts to fit Lerner & Loewe and even Mingus into bossa nova's bright clothes. --Marc Greilsamer

Best Bossa Nova band music that all ages can relate to, 13 Oct 2008
I'm not a music expert or anything like that. i just know that I like a good melody and pleasant sounds. I listen to this music in the car together with my 8 year old son and it puts a smile on both our faces. When ever I play this CD, anyone that hears it enjoys it's melodies and I keep havingt to buy it for my friends. This music is timeless and certainly sells Quincy Jones as a guy with a good ear for arranging different sounds and tempos within a piece of music. We can't get enough of the trumpets on No 3 i.e "Desafinado". We love the percussions in "Samba de Una Nota So" i.e tract 7. The flutes on track 9 and the trumpets on track 9 we could listen to over and over again. You can't go wrong with this music. My Dad is 70, I'm in my forties and my son is 8 and we all get this music. definately a quality buy.
Hugely enjoyable CD, 03 Nov 2006
If you only buy one Quincy Jones CD then this is the one to have. This CD is a real gem and one of my favourite CD's - every track is quality. This is good-time music that will won't fail to put you in a playful mood, a real joy to listen to.
Master of Mojo!, 21 Feb 2006
As an arrager and collaborator with everyone from Count Basie, through Miles Davis to Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones is peerless. He has huge skill in getting a sound that is required. This piece of Latin Jazz history has, I guess, been revived by its central role in putting the mojo in the Austen Powers movies. Although Mike Meyers seems to specialise in disposible light comedy we have much to thank him for not leasr for helping to focus attention on this brilliant album, which many of us would previously have thought of as too cheesy for our tastes. Soul Bossa Nova is just one of the jems here. If you are still woried about this making you look too uncool then you can always turn up your CD Player full blast and put on Miles Davis Knd of Blue*/The Arctic Monkeys*/The Complete Wangner's Ring Cycle* (*delete as appropriate)afterwards. Good-time music for people who want music that puts a smile on their face.
Much more than Austin Powers, 07 Aug 2002
From 'My Definition' to Austin Powers via the World Cup 1998, the title track of this album is everywhere. What about the rest of it though? It's great! Big, brassy, Latin-esque, uplifting music to put a smile on any face. It's the CD I put on when I want a lift, when I want to end up jumping around the house like a fool or just before I'm going to go out. Infectious and always a crowd pleaser...

What a great producer shame ai no corrida and stuff like that are 7inch edits favourite track is the dude pure class Classy Stuff!, 21 Jul 2004
This album is amazing not only for those of us wishing to delve into the world of, in my opinion, the finest record producer of our time, but if you just wanna chill and put your feet up at the end of a long, hard day, this is sure to raise a smile!. fantastic album quincy jones wow!!, 05 Oct 2008
quincy jones has worked with some legends in his time ray charles, duke ellington, dinah washington, frank sinatra, michael jackson he is a fab talent in his own right!! walking into space was good and of course he worked with duke ellington and frank sinatra on an album way back and he was good mates with ray charles!! here we have anouther rod temperton classic aswell as thriller, off the wall, and he worked on the karen carpenters only solo album wow karen carpenter what a voice!! buy this album its fab!! Diva, 20 Jun 2008
Try it!
Cool!, 21 Sep 2004
This is a perfect album for those late nights when you just wanna relax, buy it!
Tickled Purple, 09 Aug 2005
After many searches to find this soundtrack I have finally got my hands on it for a reasonable price. Anyone that loves the film will enevitably love the sountrack the mixture of emotion in the film is captured brilliantly on it. A definate must for all fans of this classic film.
Telling the story with music, 05 Jun 2003
Anyone who has read the book or seen the film of The Color Purple could not help but be moved by Quincy Jones' lyrical soundtrack. The tracks tell the story from beginnning to end and, even though I did not know anything about the story when I first listened to the music, I knew the story from just listening to the songs and themes on the album. By the time the theme for the mail box is reprised at the end of the album, I was in tears and knew that the film was going to have the same effect. Speilberg definately made the right move by hiring Jones instead of John Williams for this project. Highly recommended. IF you can find a copy.

Bravo Q, for me this is best album from you.
the wiz, 20 Nov 2008
The Wiz [Us Import] i have had this double cd for a while now, well a few years in fact and i have forgotten how good the music is, we know it was not a big hit but diana and the gang did good in my book, i think it was made long befor its time and it still stands the test of time' we all know diana was a little old to play dorothy but who cares, its still great stuff. the songs are all up-lifting and great foot stomping tracks, from Ease On Down The Road, Dont You Bring Me No Bad News, and Mean Old Lion is just so good, great song, A Brand New Day, so good, then you get the best song of all in my book Home' this is such a warm song and you can feel diana give this song all she can and boy it works. so if you have this and dont play it give it a go if you dont have this go and get it now and you will hear great songs from all and you will have a trip of a life time....enjoy.
Wow!!, 30 Jun 2005
I am currently doing the musical production of the Wiz with my school and i have to say i think the music is incredible!! Every song i have performed and listened to while acting have been superb and the soundtrack is so amazing! "You can't win" and "Brand new day" are fantastic and they stick in my head all the time. i have watched the Wiz once before on tv and i thought it was amazing. Michael jackson was superb and so were the other actors. I feel pleased and privelaged to be working on the Wiz at this moment in time and i am so happy i have been introduced to a fantastic glittering array of songs!!!
The Greatest Mowtown Musical!, 19 Sep 2000
Where do we start. A cool soundtrack and a cast including Michael Jackson. Hits like "Ease On Down The Road" Help to make this version of the wizard of Oz roll with the best of them! If you have never seen or heard of this film buy the video and the soundtrack. You won't be disappointed
