Such are the near-generational gaps between latter-day AC/DC albums that it's always tempting to hail the arrival of a new one as a return to form. Black Ice arrives a whopping eight years after the band's last offering, Stiff Upper Lip, but one chorus into "Rock N Roll Train", the wise man would conclude that any evolution here is as slow and incremental as, well, evolution. A punchy, straightforward opener that finds Angus Young in good riff and Brian Johnson preaching a familiar gospel of schoolgirls and schoolboys, fantasy and ecstasy, it's familiar in the best possible way. A little deeper into Black Ice, however, and there's evidence of a slightly altered approach. Producer Brendan O'Brien softens and fleshes out the stripped-down, electric blues sound AC/DC rediscovered on 1995's Ballbreaker, and in places the band follow suit--take "Anything Goes", a poppy stomp that recalls O'Brien's other recent charge, Bruce Springsteen. Elsewhere, "Stormy May Day" and "Money Made" find Young taking up the slide for a few Zeppelin-flavoured licks. A few new paths, then, but all in all, the destination is pretty much the same: another solid late-period AC/DC album that, while unlikely to dislodge Back in Black from the fan's pedestal, finds its makers rocking into ripe old age. --Louis Pattison

Slightly better than Stiff Upper Lip, but not as good as Razors Edge. Not quite a classic album because there's too many flat tracks here. Having said that I've played it many times and punch my fist in the air in enjoyment. The stand out tracks are Runnaway Train, Big Jack, War Machine, Spoiling for a fight, and Rocking all the way. All in all, if you're a fan, buy it, play it and get rocking!

This album's greatest strength is that it is just so enjoyable to listen to. Simple as that. Obviously it doesn't break much new ground, but Angus Young's guitar sound is more 'live' than other recent (if I can use that word) AC/DC albums. The guitar playing on 'Spoiling for a Fight' is astonishing and leaves you hungry for more. Whereas Metallica's return to the use of guitar solos is just irritating (you have to sit through them), with Angus you don't want to miss any of it. The best track I think is Rock n' Roll Dream; Johnson's singing if anything has improved and the band have upped their 'blues' sound, and that really works well for them; the album is deceptively clever and definately a 'return to form'.

Black Ice is not really a bad AC/DC album, but the opportunity for it to be a great one really was missed. The basics of the songs are there, even if the riffs are often recycled. The problem is that while the songs are intially catchy enough with decent riffing, they do not build a momentum and rather just flatline halfway through. I keep listening through the album and trying to decide what a good first single would have been (rather than Rock n Roll Train) but there really aren't any candidates that meet the standard.

Rock n Roll Train is basically a Highway to Hell rewrite but rather than build into the classic that Highway to Hell does, RnR Train dies after the first chorus. This is the problem with all of the better songs on here. They get your foot tapping along to a great riff, then the song dies.

Another issue is the quality of the lyrics. The lyrics have been pretty poor since the Youngs started penning them in 1990 but here they are pretty much nonsensical. They are truly awful and it is to the detriment of the album. They really just seem like random lines thrown in here and there with references to storms, decibels, liking rock n roll etc. The lyrics during both the Bonn Scott and Brian Johnson writing eras both had their clever moments, even if the subject matter was nothing too meaningful

So, I say this was a missed opportunity to do a great album. If more time were spent shaping the songs beyond the intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, end structure and if Brian (or anyone in the band) had at least helped with the lyrics it could have been so much better. There should only have been 10 songs and the album should have been called Decibel. It's not a great song but it sounds like an AC/DC album title. Black Ice is a nonesense song and a nonesense title.

The best thing on the album is Cliff Williams. His bass is pushed right up front and he gets to do a few riffs for a change.

The album is better than Ballbreaker but not as good as anything that came before it. I never bought Stiff Upper Lip after being burned by Ballbreaker so I can't comment on that one.

The album opener is a cracker, the next few songs pretty good and then the songs just blend one into another and instantly forgettable and the train of songs run off the tracks into obscurity. I have listened to the album only 3 times through start to finish so far so maybe I am being a little harsh. The guys believe that an album should not be broken up and sold as seperate tracks and that the running order and whole album feel is important so in this respect, taking the album as a whole its somewhat dissappointing. It is overly long but then maybe we shouldn't complain, after all you can't get too much of a good thing but the guys would have been better served by releasing two 9 track albums 4 years apart which would keep the band quids in and the fans ticking over with some good material. I am sure some of the new songs will tour well on their worldwide tour its only a pity they are not playing more stadium venues over arenas so that a few more can get the rare chance to see them.

The death of the lead singer would spell the end of most bands. But most bands aren't AC/DC. After Bon Scott's overindulgence in alcohol lead to his undignified end, lead guitarist Angus Young and Co. simply found a singer that sounded exactly the same and carried on. The result: Back In Black, the most successful album of their lengthy career. Like every other AC/DC album, it doesn't deviate from their trademark sounds: loud guitars, basic boogie and vocals that sound like they are being screamed out by a buzzsaw. But never before (or since) have they gotten the formula so consistently right: "You Shook Me All Night Long", "Rock 'N' Roll Ain't Noise Pollution", "Hell's Bells" and the title track are among the best hard rock songs ever. This album only happened because we lost Bon Scott. If you don't like heavy metal/heavy rock then you won't like this. However, if you do then it doesn't really get any better. Some bands have done records that are as good as this but after over twenty five years of listening to music in the area I'm struggling to think of any album that betters it. Quite simply A ROCKER!

Back in Black is now so ubiquitous it seems that every home actually has one. It has sold more than twenty million copies and you'd probably be hard-pressed to find anyone who hasn't even heard of it.

It was AC/DC's first album after the death of their previous, classic vocalist Bon Scott and was made with the blessing of Scott's family, with all concerned feeling that some kind of tribute was appropriate. And it is an excellent album.

But it's not their best.

After the masterwork that was Highway to Hell, producer Robert "Mutt" Lange directs this album into heavier territory. This is no bad thing, but as the album was recorded and released so quickly there is something of a sameiness about the tracks, and a couple of rather forgettable ones too, notably Let Me Put My Love Into You and Shake a Leg.

However, Scott's replacement Brian Johnson shines on his DC debut and the band certainly fire on all cylinders on the classics Rock And Roll Ain't Noise Pollution, Hells Bells, Have a Drink On Me and the outstanding title track, gloriously defiant in the face of the loss of their former frontman. And Johnson was definitely the right choice as Scott's replacement.

So, a mixed bag. Not the best AC/DC album ever but probably the most important. There were greater things behind them, but there were also greater things yet to come.

You don't need a review, you now know everything you need to know. If you're still reading this you simply need to get a copy of the album and catch up with the rest of the world - you can't fool a planet - it really is that good.

What Highway to Hell has that Back in Black doesn't is Bon Scott, AC / DC's original lead singer who died just months after this album was released. Scott had a rusty, raspy, scream of a voice, like he might break into a coughing fit at any moment. In other words, on crunchy, hook-heavy metal classics like the title track and on "Get It Hot" which is more roadhouse rock than metal, he had the perfect instrument for such wild-living anthems. This has to be one of the greatest rock albums of all time, and for me AC/DC`s second best after the previous "Powerage".The production on this is excellent, recently purchased this on cd as my vinyl copy is on its last legs.Great to hear it again, where do you start,all great tunes but stand out for me are,Highway to hell,walk all over you,If you want blood and touch to much.
I was lucky enough to see this tour and went two nights running at Manchester Apollo,awesome.Have a great memory of being at the Led Zep Knebworth gig in 79 and they played this album in full over the pa system.
Of course this was Bon Scott`s last album and he was/is sadly missed.After this album came their biggest selling album"Back in Black", another great solid record but for me the Bon Scott era was in another league. If you have been on another planet or have just discovered AC/DC, buy this album,"Powerage", "Let there be rock", and as for AC/DC phrase 2, buy "Back in Black" and then jump forward to the present and buy the new album "Black Ice",which for me is the best vocal display by Brian Johnson has ever put on any of his previous records since "Back in black". If he`d sang more like this earlier I would not have got bored with them as I did from 1983 untill 2001, when "Stiff upper lip" restored some pride.
Anyhow back to "Highway to Hell", its brill, go and buy it,wack the volume up and enjoy.

What can anyone find to say about AC/DC that is not all praise? - One of the best rock bands of all time! - This superb album contains the AC/DC rock anthem "Highway To Hell". Angus and Bon are shown at their rocking best, giving it all they've got. Through a series of memorable songs, we terminate in "Night Prowler" - Bon's way of saying "goodbye" - a really creepy number that makes the hair stand up on the neck.
Whilst this is not my favourite AC/DC album, falling short of "Let There Be Rock", it comes close.

This is by far in my opinion AC-CD's second best album after Back to Black.

Highway to Hell is more like Highway to Rock Heaven.

Too many people forget how long ago this album was made. There were no fancy studio tricks, or equipment from NASA to make bands sound better. THIS IS ROCK AND ROLL AT ITS BEST. What a shame Bon died how good could they have they become. Good old fashioned rock. Never been bettered, never been challenged. AWESOME.....

Some bands have done records that are as good as this but after over twenty five years of listening to music in the area I'm struggling to think of any album that betters it. Quite simply A ROCKER!

Back in Black is now so ubiquitous it seems that every home actually has one. It has sold more than twenty million copies and you'd probably be hard-pressed to find anyone who hasn't even heard of it.

It was AC/DC's first album after the death of their previous, classic vocalist Bon Scott and was made with the blessing of Scott's family, with all concerned feeling that some kind of tribute was appropriate. And it is an excellent album.

But it's not their best.

After the masterwork that was Highway to Hell, producer Robert "Mutt" Lange directs this album into heavier territory. This is no bad thing, but as the album was recorded and released so quickly there is something of a sameiness about the tracks, and a couple of rather forgettable ones too, notably Let Me Put My Love Into You and Shake a Leg.

However, Scott's replacement Brian Johnson shines on his DC debut and the band certainly fire on all cylinders on the classics Rock And Roll Ain't Noise Pollution, Hells Bells, Have a Drink On Me and the outstanding title track, gloriously defiant in the face of the loss of their former frontman. And Johnson was definitely the right choice as Scott's replacement.

So, a mixed bag. Not the best AC/DC album ever but probably the most important. There were greater things behind them, but there were also greater things yet to come.

A rare review in that I won't even metion the music. Search the web and you'll find that this is the world's second best selling album ever (second only to Thriller). You don't need a review, you now know everything you need to know. If you're still reading this you simply need to get a copy of the album and catch up with the rest of the world - you can't fool a planet - it really is that good.

This has to be one of the greatest rock albums of all time, and for me AC/DC`s second best after the previous "Powerage".The production on this is excellent, recently purchased this on cd as my vinyl copy is on its last legs.Great to hear it again, where do you start,all great tunes but stand out for me are,Highway to hell,walk all over you,If you want blood and touch to much.
I was lucky enough to see this tour and went two nights running at Manchester Apollo,awesome.Have a great memory of being at the Led Zep Knebworth gig in 79 and they played this album in full over the pa system.
Of course this was Bon Scott`s last album and he was/is sadly missed.After this album came their biggest selling album"Back in Black", another great solid record but for me the Bon Scott era was in another league. If you have been on another planet or have just discovered AC/DC, buy this album,"Powerage", "Let there be rock", and as for AC/DC phrase 2, buy "Back in Black" and then jump forward to the present and buy the new album "Black Ice",which for me is the best vocal display by Brian Johnson has ever put on any of his previous records since "Back in black". If he`d sang more like this earlier I would not have got bored with them as I did from 1983 untill 2001, when "Stiff upper lip" restored some pride.
Anyhow back to "Highway to Hell", its brill, go and buy it,wack the volume up and enjoy.

What can anyone find to say about AC/DC that is not all praise? - One of the best rock bands of all time! - This superb album contains the AC/DC rock anthem "Highway To Hell". Angus and Bon are shown at their rocking best, giving it all they've got. Through a series of memorable songs, we terminate in "Night Prowler" - Bon's way of saying "goodbye" - a really creepy number that makes the hair stand up on the neck.
Whilst this is not my favourite AC/DC album, falling short of "Let There Be Rock", it comes close.

What an album. 10 songs of utter rock genius.

This is by far in my opinion AC-CD's second best album after Back to Black.

Highway to Hell is more like Highway to Rock Heaven.

How can you not buy this re-mastered album at £4.99.

Too many people forget how long ago this album was made. There were no fancy studio tricks, or equipment from NASA to make bands sound better. THIS IS ROCK AND ROLL AT ITS BEST. What a shame Bon died how good could they have they become. Good old fashioned rock. Never been bettered, never been challenged. AWESOME.....

I have just got the box set recently, and have been enjoying it greatly. Not just that, my three daughters aged 9, 6 and 2 are great fans, and want to listen to it all the time in the car. And the two-year-old even says 'Rock' once she hears the first few bars of 'We will rock you'. Just goes on to show that Queen truly made ageless music, which still scores far above most contemporary music.

If this collection doesn't represent 5-star standard then nothing does, i understand that music is a personal experience but queen's music really does span all tastes and i've yet to meet anyone who's spoken a bad word against them. Freddie Mercury has been described by many and the best frontman of all time and there really is no arguement, his vocals are strong througout every song here and brian may's excellent guitar work is an added blessing. Not only is this collection full of great songs but it's also extremely good value. Music rarely gets better than this and maybe never will again.

The best, most flamboyant, most spectacular, most amazing rock group ever!! Queen are just brilliant. In Freddie Mercury, they had a frontman who had it all. He could command the stage like no one else, had a voice that was so incredible, a style that was so unique, and a talent that can never be dimmed. Brian May is a guitar genius, able to make the instrument speak, and being a good vocalist in his own right. John Deacon is brilliant on bass, and Roger Taylor a diva on the drums, each member stamping his own individuality on the band. Their music is so intense, so haunting, so fantastic, so QUEEN!! This band are THE Royalty of Rock, and as such, deserve all the homage that is offerred to them. They rock,their music rocks, they certainly rock my world, and I'm sure that everyone who listens to them will find their own world rocked too. God Save Queen!!

As many of their early fans would agree, Danish-Californian quartet Metallica seemed to lose it around the mid 90s. Dropping the hard-nosed, blue-collar appeal they had cultivated with their initial slew of albums, the band began to pander to a more commercial audience with diluted outings such as Load, Re-Load, Garage Inc.--not to mention 2003's risible St Anger. Death Magnetic, Metallica's first album in five years, is hence much anticipated. Will it be a long-awaited return to form, or a failed attempt to rekindle their inaugural power? In truth, it's a bit of both. Helmed by veteran producer Rick Rubin, Death Magnetic reinstates many of Metallica's early motifs--searing riffs, shredding solos, pounding drums--and even updates them with a huge, 21st century sound. The album has a decent selection of heavyweight thrills and spills, from the haunting, evocative opener "That Was Your Life", the live jam groove of "The End of the Line" and the flesh-ripping "Broken, Beat & Scarred". Slightly better than Stiff Upper Lip, but not as good as Razors Edge. Not quite a classic album because there's too many flat tracks here. Having said that I've played it many times and punch my fist in the air in enjoyment. The stand out tracks are Runnaway Train, Big Jack, War Machine, Spoiling for a fight, and Rocking all the way. All in all, if you're a fan, buy it, play it and get rocking!

This album's greatest strength is that it is just so enjoyable to listen to. Simple as that. Obviously it doesn't break much new ground, but Angus Young's guitar sound is more 'live' than other recent (if I can use that word) AC/DC albums. The guitar playing on 'Spoiling for a Fight' is astonishing and leaves you hungry for more. Whereas Metallica's return to the use of guitar solos is just irritating (you have to sit through them), with Angus you don't want to miss any of it. The best track I think is Rock n' Roll Dream; Johnson's singing if anything has improved and the band have upped their 'blues' sound, and that really works well for them; the album is deceptively clever and definately a 'return to form'.

Black Ice is not really a bad AC/DC album, but the opportunity for it to be a great one really was missed. The basics of the songs are there, even if the riffs are often recycled. The problem is that while the songs are intially catchy enough with decent riffing, they do not build a momentum and rather just flatline halfway through. I keep listening through the album and trying to decide what a good first single would have been (rather than Rock n Roll Train) but there really aren't any candidates that meet the standard.

Rock n Roll Train is basically a Highway to Hell rewrite but rather than build into the classic that Highway to Hell does, RnR Train dies after the first chorus. This is the problem with all of the better songs on here. They get your foot tapping along to a great riff, then the song dies.

Another issue is the quality of the lyrics. The lyrics have been pretty poor since the Youngs started penning them in 1990 but here they are pretty much nonsensical. They are truly awful and it is to the detriment of the album. They really just seem like random lines thrown in here and there with references to storms, decibels, liking rock n roll etc. The lyrics during both the Bonn Scott and Brian Johnson writing eras both had their clever moments, even if the subject matter was nothing too meaningful

So, I say this was a missed opportunity to do a great album. If more time were spent shaping the songs beyond the intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, end structure and if Brian (or anyone in the band) had at least helped with the lyrics it could have been so much better. There should only have been 10 songs and the album should have been called Decibel. It's not a great song but it sounds like an AC/DC album title. Black Ice is a nonesense song and a nonesense title.

The best thing on the album is Cliff Williams. His bass is pushed right up front and he gets to do a few riffs for a change.

The album is better than Ballbreaker but not as good as anything that came before it. I never bought Stiff Upper Lip after being burned by Ballbreaker so I can't comment on that one.

3 stars because there are some good tunes on hear. No classics, unfortunately.

The album opener is a cracker, the next few songs pretty good and then the songs just blend one into another and instantly forgettable and the train of songs run off the tracks into obscurity. I have listened to the album only 3 times through start to finish so far so maybe I am being a little harsh. The guys believe that an album should not be broken up and sold as seperate tracks and that the running order and whole album feel is important so in this respect, taking the album as a whole its somewhat dissappointing. It is overly long but then maybe we shouldn't complain, after all you can't get too much of a good thing but the guys would have been better served by releasing two 9 track albums 4 years apart which would keep the band quids in and the fans ticking over with some good material. I am sure some of the new songs will tour well on their worldwide tour its only a pity they are not playing more stadium venues over arenas so that a few more can get the rare chance to see them.

This album only happened because we lost Bon Scott. If you don't like heavy metal/heavy rock then you won't like this. However, if you do then it doesn't really get any better. After the impenetrable 'St. Anger', this is something of a return to form. OK - it's back to the mainstream, but that's what most Metallica fans want. This album delivers in spades and all the songs clock in at between 5 and 8 minutes. It's classy, atmospheric, ballsy rock - the songs are good, the playing's tight, Hetfield's in fine voice, and all is well with the Metallica world. Recommended!

This album demonstrates many of the influences Metallica have had over the years. Every song is quite different to the one before yet all remain very appealing and enjoyable.
It seems Metallica have rediscovered the right mix of melody, aggression and funk after their last few disappointing efforts. Some of the influences I can pick up on are: Iron Maiden, John 5, Slayer, Pantera and perhaps even a little bit of Marty Friedman. Favourite song? Cyanide

In summary, a brilliant album of very different tunes but all capturing the imagination of the listener. Thoroughly recommended - 5 Star!

For goodness sake let's get things in perspective here. For all hard-core Metallica fans, no, this isn't as good as Master of Puppets and yes, it's better than Load/Reload and St Anger. For all of that can you think of a better Metal album than this released in the last decade? I certainly can't. Enjoy for what it is. A serious quality metal album from the masters. It's not perfect, but it's as close as anyone's been for a long time. For all those complaining about sound quality, buy a decent set of headphones for your pod, believe me, it makes a difference with this album.

This band used to be at the cutting edge of their field and pretty much the "best" at what they did.

Unfortunately so was Babbage's Difference Engine.

The only thing sticking out from the pile of "meh" is a few solos and a couple of riffs (mainly from 'All Nightmare Long'). Still, it held my interest long enough for me to see it through to the end.

What i certainly didn't feel was "Metallica are back" or "Its a bit of MOP and a bit of AJFO with a sprinkle of RTL" or anything vaguely pretentious like that.

Fortunately Metallica have made each one of their albums sound fairly unique (Load and Reload excepted, obviously) and i hope they continue on that path.

However, there is just too much stellar metal (Ansur, Cynic, Decapitated, Bal-Sagoth, Pantera, Emperor etc etc etc) for this to have any real shelf life.

Don't hold your breath for the next one though...

This is a great album and I have been playing in constantly for two months. This is hard and heavy and so if you are more used to the easier going Black Album/Load/Re-load this might not be for you, although I would still recommend listening to it.

The only gripe I've got, is why do Metallica insist on using a sound which sounds like they recorded it with a fostex tape four track. I really miss the production of the black album - what ever happened to making sounds 'sound' good - as the songs are great.

One final thing I will add - this album translates better than any other album live - amazing.

If time is the true test, then Guns N' Roses' Greatest Hits confirms that they really were one of the greatest rock & roll bands in the world. While, in retrospect, fellow graduates of the class of 1987 are about as cool as poodle perms and spandex, the LA bad boys still rock like gods. Listening to the sun-drenched chords of "Paradise City" and the ensuing stadium-sized swagger is enough to make wearing leather trousers and bandanas seem like a good idea. Of course, it helped that for them sex, drugs and rock & roll was a way of life, not a fashion statement. As Axl Rose wails "I wanna watch you bleed" on "Welcome to the Jungle", like a chain-smoking lunatic possessed, it's hard not to believe he meant it. Yet equally, it was his surprisingly poetic nature that made genuinely touching love songs of "Patience" and "Sweet Child of Mine".

Though none of their subsequent albums matched the drug-crazed genius of Appetite for Destruction, they did, as the Greatest Hits reminds, have their moments. From the bloated Use Your Illusion I & II came ultimate rock ballads "Don't Cry" and "November Rain", along with the primal rage that was "You Could Be Mine". And while the covers of the The Spaghetti Incident were largely forgettable, the fact that their final single was a seedy sneer through the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil" seems spectacularly fitting. --Dan Gennoe

I am sure some of the new songs will tour well on their worldwide tour its only a pity they are not playing more stadium venues over arenas so that a few more can get the rare chance to see them.

This album only happened because we lost Bon Scott. If you don't like heavy metal/heavy rock then you won't like this. However, if you do then it doesn't really get any better. Some bands have done records that are as good as this but after over twenty five years of listening to music in the area I'm struggling to think of any album that betters it. Quite simply A ROCKER!

Back in Black is now so ubiquitous it seems that every home actually has one. It has sold more than twenty million copies and you'd probably be hard-pressed to find anyone who hasn't even heard of it.

It was AC/DC's first album after the death of their previous, classic vocalist Bon Scott and was made with the blessing of Scott's family, with all concerned feeling that some kind of tribute was appropriate. And it is an excellent album.

But it's not their best.

After the masterwork that was Highway to Hell, producer Robert "Mutt" Lange directs this album into heavier territory. This is no bad thing, but as the album was recorded and released so quickly there is something of a sameiness about the tracks, and a couple of rather forgettable ones too, notably Let Me Put My Love Into You and Shake a Leg.

However, Scott's replacement Brian Johnson shines on his DC debut and the band certainly fire on all cylinders on the classics Rock And Roll Ain't Noise Pollution, Hells Bells, Have a Drink On Me and the outstanding title track, gloriously defiant in the face of the loss of their former frontman. And Johnson was definitely the right choice as Scott's replacement.

So, a mixed bag. Not the best AC/DC album ever but probably the most important. There were greater things behind them, but there were also greater things yet to come.

A rare review in that I won't even metion the music. Search the web and you'll find that this is the world's second best selling album ever (second only to Thriller). You don't need a review, you now know everything you need to know. If you're still reading this you simply need to get a copy of the album and catch up with the rest of the world - you can't fool a planet - it really is that good.

This has to be one of the greatest rock albums of all time, and for me AC/DC`s second best after the previous "Powerage".The production on this is excellent, recently purchased this on cd as my vinyl copy is on its last legs.Great to hear it again, where do you start,all great tunes but stand out for me are,Highway to hell,walk all over you,If you want blood and touch to much.
I was lucky enough to see this tour and went two nights running at Manchester Apollo,awesome.Have a great memory of being at the Led Zep Knebworth gig in 79 and they played this album in full over the pa system.
Of course this was Bon Scott`s last album and he was/is sadly missed.After this album came their biggest selling album"Back in Black", another great solid record but for me the Bon Scott era was in another league. If you have been on another planet or have just discovered AC/DC, buy this album,"Powerage", "Let there be rock", and as for AC/DC phrase 2, buy "Back in Black" and then jump forward to the present and buy the new album "Black Ice",which for me is the best vocal display by Brian Johnson has ever put on any of his previous records since "Back in black". If he`d sang more like this earlier I would not have got bored with them as I did from 1983 untill 2001, when "Stiff upper lip" restored some pride.
Anyhow back to "Highway to Hell", its brill, go and buy it,wack the volume up and enjoy.

What can anyone find to say about AC/DC that is not all praise? - One of the best rock bands of all time! - This superb album contains the AC/DC rock anthem "Highway To Hell". Angus and Bon are shown at their rocking best, giving it all they've got. Through a series of memorable songs, we terminate in "Night Prowler" - Bon's way of saying "goodbye" - a really creepy number that makes the hair stand up on the neck.
Whilst this is not my favourite AC/DC album, falling short of "Let There Be Rock", it comes close.

This is by far in my opinion AC-CD's second best album after Back to Black.

Highway to Hell is more like Highway to Rock Heaven.

Too many people forget how long ago this album was made. There were no fancy studio tricks, or equipment from NASA to make bands sound better. THIS IS ROCK AND ROLL AT ITS BEST. What a shame Bon died how good could they have they become. Good old fashioned rock. Never been bettered, never been challenged. AWESOME.....

I have just got the box set recently, and have been enjoying it greatly. Not just that, my three daughters aged 9, 6 and 2 are great fans, and want to listen to it all the time in the car. And the two-year-old even says 'Rock' once she hears the first few bars of 'We will rock you'. Just goes on to show that Queen truly made ageless music, which still scores far above most contemporary music.

If this collection doesn't represent 5-star standard then nothing does, i understand that music is a personal experience but queen's music really does span all tastes and i've yet to meet anyone who's spoken a bad word against them. Freddie Mercury has been described by many and the best frontman of all time and there really is no arguement, his vocals are strong througout every song here and brian may's excellent guitar work is an added blessing. Not only is this collection full of great songs but it's also extremely good value. Music rarely gets better than this and maybe never will again.

The best, most flamboyant, most spectacular, most amazing rock group ever!! Queen are just brilliant. In Freddie Mercury, they had a frontman who had it all. He could command the stage like no one else, had a voice that was so incredible, a style that was so unique, and a talent that can never be dimmed. Brian May is a guitar genius, able to make the instrument speak, and being a good vocalist in his own right. John Deacon is brilliant on bass, and Roger Taylor a diva on the drums, each member stamping his own individuality on the band. Their music is so intense, so haunting, so fantastic, so QUEEN!! This band are THE Royalty of Rock, and as such, deserve all the homage that is offerred to them. They rock,their music rocks, they certainly rock my world, and I'm sure that everyone who listens to them will find their own world rocked too. God Save Queen!!

After the impenetrable 'St. Anger', this is something of a return to form. OK - it's back to the mainstream, but that's what most Metallica fans want. This album delivers in spades and all the songs clock in at between 5 and 8 minutes. It's classy, atmospheric, ballsy rock - the songs are good, the playing's tight, Hetfield's in fine voice, and all is well with the Metallica world. Recommended!

This album demonstrates many of the influences Metallica have had over the years. Every song is quite different to the one before yet all remain very appealing and enjoyable.
It seems Metallica have rediscovered the right mix of melody, aggression and funk after their last few disappointing efforts. Some of the influences I can pick up on are: Iron Maiden, John 5, Slayer, Pantera and perhaps even a little bit of Marty Friedman. Favourite song? Cyanide

In summary, a brilliant album of very different tunes but all capturing the imagination of the listener. Thoroughly recommended - 5 Star!

For goodness sake let's get things in perspective here. For all hard-core Metallica fans, no, this isn't as good as Master of Puppets and yes, it's better than Load/Reload and St Anger. For all of that can you think of a better Metal album than this released in the last decade? I certainly can't. Enjoy for what it is. A serious quality metal album from the masters. It's not perfect, but it's as close as anyone's been for a long time. For all those complaining about sound quality, buy a decent set of headphones for your pod, believe me, it makes a difference with this album.

This band used to be at the cutting edge of their field and pretty much the "best" at what they did.

Unfortunately so was Babbage's Difference Engine.

The only thing sticking out from the pile of "meh" is a few solos and a couple of riffs (mainly from 'All Nightmare Long'). Still, it held my interest long enough for me to see it through to the end.

What i certainly didn't feel was "Metallica are back" or "Its a bit of MOP and a bit of AJFO with a sprinkle of RTL" or anything vaguely pretentious like that.

Fortunately Metallica have made each one of their albums sound fairly unique (Load and Reload excepted, obviously) and i hope they continue on that path.

However, there is just too much stellar metal (Ansur, Cynic, Decapitated, Bal-Sagoth, Pantera, Emperor etc etc etc) for this to have any real shelf life.

Don't hold your breath for the next one though...

This is a great album and I have been playing in constantly for two months. This is hard and heavy and so if you are more used to the easier going Black Album/Load/Re-load this might not be for you, although I would still recommend listening to it.

The only gripe I've got, is why do Metallica insist on using a sound which sounds like they recorded it with a fostex tape four track. I really miss the production of the black album - what ever happened to making sounds 'sound' good - as the songs are great.

One final thing I will add - this album translates better than any other album live - amazing.

If you are new to the world of Guns N' Roses I urge you to go and pick up Appetite for Destruction and play the hell out of it. This is a good CD if perhaps you just want a mix CD for the car or whatever, but there is less of their groundbreaking debut album on here then I would have liked. Songs like Rocket Queen especially deserves a spot on this CD.

Excellent Companion Set to the 1st Album, 27 Aug 2008
This is an excellent set collecting together in a convenient single disk the best of G'n'R. But if you want an introduction to the band you should purchase the 1st album no question as its one of the greatest rock albums of all time. What this Greatest Hits collection does is bring together all the best bits from the other 4 albums plus the odd single. There are only 3 'taster' tracks from the first album here so its no hardship to buy the 1st album and this one together (especially as the former is so inexpensive). That's why this is the perfect companion set to the first album. If you are still hungry after that then dive into the others. No serious fan of hard rock, or for that matter any fan of contemporary music, can afford not to have a healthy selection of G'n'R in their collection.

Now I am a massive Guns `n' Roses fan and have been since about the age of 10 when I first heard Paradise City, I then went and got all of their albums from my local music store. Now the problem with this CD isn't the quality of the songs, tracks 1-9 and track 11 are fantastic, but...

1) Irrelevant because it isn't even a greatest hits. Some of the tracks are extremely poor and have no place here, for example `Since I Don't Have You', `Ain't it Fun', `Sympathy for the Devil' and `Live and let Die'. Now although these songs are good when you consider some of the songs not included on this so called greatest his such as `Estranged', `Breakdown', `Rocket Queen', `Don't Damn Me' and `Dead Horse' the songs included have no place on this CD.

2) Pointless because Guns `n' Roses only have 4 studio albums (one being a cover album, which isn't worth buying) and 1 mini album (Lies), and so therefore you are much better off just getting all these albums instead especially considering you can purchase them quite cheaply if you shop around and by doing this you will get all of their greatest songs.

2) Sweet Child O' Mine- 10/10 (Amazing guitar solo)
3) Patience- 9.2/10 (Nice acoustic side to a bad ass band)

13) Since I Don't Have You- 4.5/10 (Decent guitar solo but that's it)
14) Sympathy for the Devil- 3/10 (Better than original but still not great)

Now although this is an amazing CD for the reasons I have already given above this is not worth buying, for a start `Estranged' isn't even here. Listen to this song and explain how Sympathy for the Devil or Since I Don't Have You are better, then you'll see my point about poor song choices. And aside from `Estranged' there are half a dozen other songs that should be on this disc and aren't. Although the rest of the songs make this 4 star album (1 star knocked off for tracks 10, 12, 13 and 14) don't bother getting this just buy the following albums.

This is my first album from Guns and Roses and I love it!
Every track on here is one in which you can easily find yourself playing again and again!
Although I like every song on this CD, my personal favorites are the legendary "Sweet Child Of Mine" and "You Could Be Mine".
You really couldn't ask for a better G and R greatest hits CD than this, it's brilliant rock music!
A solid overview of the band and a superb introduction to a newbie fan!

This does what it ways on the tin, it is a compilation of GN'R's biggest hits (meaning biggest selling singles, not best songs) hence features stuff from their Spaghetti Incident LP(okay but not great) instead of stuff from when they were rather unknown like Mr Brownstone. Plus, the BAND themselves (even Axl) tried to stop this being released by Geffen when they saw the track listing. I mean, Since I Don't Have You on their greatest hits cd? Come on geffen, whatever.
Lots of their best songs were not released as singles, so don't get a look-in, such as Locomotive, Pretty Tied Up, Out Ta Get Me, Rocket Queen, the list goes on and on.
Tip: Buy Appetite for Destruction and maybe, if you really like them, Use Your Illusion one and two. Skip the greatest hits.

Queen brought a whole new meaning to the phrase over the top. While rock & roll flamboyance stretched back at least as far as Little Richard, Freddie Mercury continued to camp it up, taking little seriously and smirking at the music's growing pretensions while partaking in them no small bit. Many of the band's singles hold up extremely well, such as "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Killer Queen" and "You're My Best Friend". The quartet's canny sense of melody and sophisticated vocal harmonies--not to mention Mercury's raised eyebrow--have travelled well through the years. --Rickey Wright

Slightly better than Stiff Upper Lip, but not as good as Razors Edge. Not quite a classic album because there's too many flat tracks here. Having said that I've played it many times and punch my fist in the air in enjoyment. The stand out tracks are Runnaway Train, Big Jack, War Machine, Spoiling for a fight, and Rocking all the way. All in all, if you're a fan, buy it, play it and get rocking!

This album's greatest strength is that it is just so enjoyable to listen to. Simple as that. Obviously it doesn't break much new ground, but Angus Young's guitar sound is more 'live' than other recent (if I can use that word) AC/DC albums. The guitar playing on 'Spoiling for a Fight' is astonishing and leaves you hungry for more. Whereas Metallica's return to the use of guitar solos is just irritating (you have to sit through them), with Angus you don't want to miss any of it. The best track I think is Rock n' Roll Dream; Johnson's singing if anything has improved and the band have upped their 'blues' sound, and that really works well for them; the album is deceptively clever and definately a 'return to form'.

Black Ice is not really a bad AC/DC album, but the opportunity for it to be a great one really was missed. The basics of the songs are there, even if the riffs are often recycled. The problem is that while the songs are intially catchy enough with decent riffing, they do not build a momentum and rather just flatline halfway through. I keep listening through the album and trying to decide what a good first single would have been (rather than Rock n Roll Train) but there really aren't any candidates that meet the standard.

Rock n Roll Train is basically a Highway to Hell rewrite but rather than build into the classic that Highway to Hell does, RnR Train dies after the first chorus. This is the problem with all of the better songs on here. They get your foot tapping along to a great riff, then the song dies.

Another issue is the quality of the lyrics. The lyrics have been pretty poor since the Youngs started penning them in 1990 but here they are pretty much nonsensical. They are truly awful and it is to the detriment of the album. They really just seem like random lines thrown in here and there with references to storms, decibels, liking rock n roll etc. The lyrics during both the Bonn Scott and Brian Johnson writing eras both had their clever moments, even if the subject matter was nothing too meaningful

So, I say this was a missed opportunity to do a great album. If more time were spent shaping the songs beyond the intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, end structure and if Brian (or anyone in the band) had at least helped with the lyrics it could have been so much better. There should only have been 10 songs and the album should have been called Decibel. It's not a great song but it sounds like an AC/DC album title. Black Ice is a nonesense song and a nonesense title.

The best thing on the album is Cliff Williams. His bass is pushed right up front and he gets to do a few riffs for a change.

The album is better than Ballbreaker but not as good as anything that came before it. I never bought Stiff Upper Lip after being burned by Ballbreaker so I can't comment on that one.

3 stars because there are some good tunes on hear. No classics, unfortunately.

The album opener is a cracker, the next few songs pretty good and then the songs just blend one into another and instantly forgettable and the train of songs run off the tracks into obscurity. I have listened to the album only 3 times through start to finish so far so maybe I am being a little harsh. The guys believe that an album should not be broken up and sold as seperate tracks and that the running order and whole album feel is important so in this respect, taking the album as a whole its somewhat dissappointing. It is overly long but then maybe we shouldn't complain, after all you can't get too much of a good thing but the guys would have been better served by releasing two 9 track albums 4 years apart which would keep the band quids in and the fans ticking over with some good material. This band are THE Royalty of Rock, and as such, deserve all the homage that is offerred to them. They rock,their music rocks, they certainly rock my world, and I'm sure that everyone who listens to them will find their own world rocked too. God Save Queen!!

After the impenetrable 'St. Anger', this is something of a return to form. OK - it's back to the mainstream, but that's what most Metallica fans want. This album delivers in spades and all the songs clock in at between 5 and 8 minutes. It's classy, atmospheric, ballsy rock - the songs are good, the playing's tight, Hetfield's in fine voice, and all is well with the Metallica world. Recommended!

This album demonstrates many of the influences Metallica have had over the years. Every song is quite different to the one before yet all remain very appealing and enjoyable.
It seems Metallica have rediscovered the right mix of melody, aggression and funk after their last few disappointing efforts. Some of the influences I can pick up on are: Iron Maiden, John 5, Slayer, Pantera and perhaps even a little bit of Marty Friedman. Favourite song? Cyanide

In summary, a brilliant album of very different tunes but all capturing the imagination of the listener. Thoroughly recommended - 5 Star!

For goodness sake let's get things in perspective here. For all hard-core Metallica fans, no, this isn't as good as Master of Puppets and yes, it's better than Load/Reload and St Anger. For all of that can you think of a better Metal album than this released in the last decade? I certainly can't. Enjoy for what it is. A serious quality metal album from the masters. It's not perfect, but it's as close as anyone's been for a long time. For all those complaining about sound quality, buy a decent set of headphones for your pod, believe me, it makes a difference with this album.
