Does what it says on the Tin!, 20 Nov 2008
With The Now series you know what you are going to get, a collection of great and not so great pop tunes which have graced the charts in the last 2 to 3 months. Now 71 is a collection 45 tunes which have done exactly that. Can you have a favourite yes, are you going to like everything probably not but pop fans can buy knowing that this is going to offer variety and 10 ten tunes for every occasion.
MORE ASSORTED RUBBISH!!, 14 Nov 2008
Why do people get conned into buying these dreadful collections?
Once again (for the 71st time to be precise) we are subjected to an offering that includes 2 or 3 good songs whilst the rest are a mixture of banal tripe and"one hit wonders", the likes of which will leave you wondering whatever happened to decent "pop" hits.
If this is the "best" of todays music then it only goes to prove that talent is no longer a requisit.

According to the track list, Katy Perry has two songs on the same disk. She is very lucky! The track list includes all my favorite songs. I know what will be at the top of the next one though... X factor hero. Oh well I can wait. The promise and Tattoo are my favorite songs of the moment. A really nice song selection. 5 star. :)

Product Description
Already on course to be one of the year's biggest sellers, Only By the Night has sealed Kings of Leon's unlikely position as Britain's favourite American rock band. The Followill brothers (and cousin) have always been tagged as part of a southern rock tradition of family bands such as the Allmans and Lynyrd Skynyrd, a label they vehemently refuted. But the skinny lads certainly looked like a classic rock act, even as they took musical inspiration from indie contemporaries The Strokes and eighties new wave acts such as The Cure and New Order. Only By the Night is effectively a sequel to 2006's terrific Because of the Times, their third record and the first where they nailed their own sound, a striking amalgam of bluesy vocals and post-punk primitivism. In comparison Only By the Night consolidates rather than advances their style. The appropriately incoherent "Sex on Fire", already a chart topping single, is catchy but sounds lightweight next to songs like the fierce "Crawl" and the stadia-ready "Cold Desert" and "Manhattan". The dissonant, almost amateurish "17" is most out of place, though Caleb Followill still bawls it with the same passion he brings to even the clumsiest couplet. More notable are several sparse romantic pleas that often borrow licks from classic Southern soul. The yearning "I Want You" is little more than its title, but it certainly convinces, while "Revelry" and the vulnerable "Use Somebody" show signs of impending maturity. Only By the Night's simplicity certainly has a wide appeal. --Steve Jelbert

Best Album of 2008 so far.. (November!) Buy it, enjoy it love it. The only Kings of Leon track I've really enjoyed before was Red Morning Light. This Album has changed all that and I often listen to it on the way to work. I love it.

Album of the Year - so far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, 12 Nov 2008
In a word - "Brilliant"
My personal favourites are "Crawl" where the kings really rock out. "I want you" a heart wrenching ballad perfectly delivered by Calebs haunting estranged voice. "Manhattan" is excellent also.
Every song on the album is excellent with no fillers & no need to ever skip over a single track.
Do yourself a favour - unless you have not got ears go out and buy this album.
Cant wait to see them live in December
Album of the Year, 09 Nov 2008
This is absolutely the finest album I have purchased this year. Despite what some so called 'die hard' fans have said, KOL have struck gold with what is almost a masterpiece. Granted there are some weak points on the album (but show me an album without any weaknesses) however these are all overshadowed by the sheer brilliance of tracks such as 'Use Somebody' and 'Cold Dessert' - even the more low key tracks such as 'Revelry' are sublime. The production of this album is excellent and the musicianship far beyond the tender years of the band. Anybody buying this album cannot fail to be disappointed.
the greatest so far?, 09 Nov 2008
To compare this to any other cd this year, is very unfair on the opposition, this stands head and shoulders above anything, not sure just listen to cols desert, its a grower, but once you have heard it, you will agree, its up there with U2's - One, Oasis- Wonderwall, Killers- Mr Brightside, i can go on but you catch my drift.
i have got to say, i hated their early stuff, thought they were dreadful. But now that have taken a giant step in front of the opposition, and feel will be a top band for the next ten years, no go and beg, borrow or steal a copy, NOW, lol
Goosebumps, tears and a double purchase, 07 Nov 2008
I've always had a very eclectic taste in music although one constant element that runs through my collection is the heartfelt passion put into the recording by the artists. I want to hear some desire, hurt, anger, lust or loathing in the tracks I listen to. The KOL's have delivered this to me in spades with a piece of work I can put on repeat and never think twice of hitting the skip button. I downloaded the album on it's release date, and now find myself buying a hard copy as well. The goosebump inducing Sex on Fire getting to number one was only the start for this album, it has so much more to offer. Use Somebody, Manhattan and Be Somebody are all worthy top ten singles in their own right. The first time I heard Caleb sing the opening line of Use Somebody it brought me to tears. When music connects with you in that way theres nothing more that you need to do than close your eyes and absorb their genius. Don't listen to the negative comments, instead, buy one of the few remaining concert tickets on ebay and listen to the KOL's play these fantastic tracks live. You won't regret it.

Product Description
The Snow Patrol we meet on A Hundred Million Suns is a band facing the same dilemma that Coldplay met on 2008's Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends; having conquered the world with a rousing, melancholy brand of MOR indie, where now? On the surface, A Hundred Million Suns seems to suggest, nowhere especially new: producer Jacknife Lee, who first worked with the band on 2003's Final Straw and went on to work with the likes of U2 and REM returns to the fold; and an opening brace of songs suggest that a successful formula--chiming guitars, gentle builds, and Gary Lightbody's quavering, tremulous vocal--persists. Still, "Take Back The City", a windswept, electronic-tinged rocker, rather does for this band what "Dakota" did for Stereophonics, proving that a spot of sleek, synthetic motorik is not beyond their grasp, and there's a new, bright optimism to Lightbody's lyrics that sets the likes of "The Planets Bend Between Us" in light relief to some of Snow Patrol's earlier work. If you want experiment, though, you'll have to wait until the closing "The Lightning Strike", a 16-minute track in three parts that investigates Phillip Glass-style minimalism and electronic beats with some aptitude. --Louis Pattison

I've always liked Snow Patrol but something has always held me back from loving them.
This is a good album - and there are some great moments if you dig deep. Engines 1:55 - sudden transformation into a beautiful melody. Does it for me driving to work in the morning.
'You know I love you like an ancient history brought to life' - nice line.

Good Stuff!, 19 Nov 2008
Despite the pettines from other reviewers who have given this a bad review simply for being Snow Patrol, I actually think it's a good album.
I think they have provided a strong assortment of songs that follows on from Eyes Open. I wouldn't say this was an outstanding album but it is worth a listen. It is an album which requires a few listens before judging it.
The tracks which stand out are "Take Back The City," "Disaster Button" and "The Lighting Strike."
A hundred million open eyes , 18 Nov 2008
4.5 stars would be a more appropriate score for this album, but in good mathematical practice I have rounded up not down.
If you like Snow Patrol, this is a very good album. Any of the tracks could easily have come from their last album "Eyes Open", and the rockier ones could have been from "Final Straw". Does it have more of an accoustic or mellow balance than "Eyes Open"? A track by track by analysis may lead you to that conclusion, but I am not left with that impression having it on my ipod and in the car.
All of which is great, you know what you are getting. And if you played their last two albums to death because you loved them so much, you will be in heaven.
HOWEVER, the difference between a realy great band and a legendry one is their ability to evolve and draw their fans along with them into subtly different styles. If the Beatles has continued to knock out hits like Can't buy me Love and Help into the late 60s, they would not have reached iconic status. And Snow Patrol do know how to evovle (Don't waste your money on their first two album, no matter how cheap they are. Just download "Making Enemies" from iTunes and you'll have all you need from these albums)
So great, buy it, listen to it, love it. But come on guys, push the boat out a bit and take us somewhere we haven't been yet.
Meh, 07 Nov 2008
Eyes Open blew me away and most tracks remain in my iPod's most played list. I want to like this, but it's all a bit 'meh' - not one track stands out, either from being bad or good. The phased piano on the last track shows a bit of a nod towards Philip Glass or Steve Reich, and then part III picks up the energy - the best part of the album for me - a long time to wait for something that makes me take notice and a right royal pain in the bum for being the last section in an 11 minute track.
I'm wondering where all the tunes have gone. I think there's a lot more to be had from Snow Patrol, but it's not in this album.
Disappointing, but then I'm waiting for The Killers next album, so I'm not exactly a hardcore fan.
A million better songs, than this, 06 Nov 2008
Like real Stars that burn out, or implode. i was hoping that Snow Patrol would not be one of these. Apart from a few goods songs, i never quite see the point of Snow Patrol, giving rather plain songs. This album is no expection and is imensely plain. One of the greatest sadness, is that in bedsits around the world there are people writting better songs and lyrics than these, but of course, those people are totally annonomous, and may never to be found by record companies.
Track 1 & 2 are commercial and track two is good,as is track 5. But actucally, surprisingly, right at the end the three songs, merging into one track lasting over 14 minutes. For me these tracks appeare to be the real talent of Snow Patrol and offer a glimpse into where they should push themselves. These three songs are abstract, brilliant and haunting. They should devote their energy into these *new* sounds, which i find exciting pushing the listener to the edge of exploding dreams

Product Description
The album title, Out of Control, is of course a misnomer-- if there is a more in control, empowered, dominant and disciplined pop tour-de-force out there, then Girls Aloud must still be sassier and brassier and a whole lot noisier, because we're not noticing anyone else. And this is also possibly the most restrained, or at least sleek and refined, collection of songs from the Girls yet. There are a couple of deeply pulsating off-the-peg club floor-fillers in "Turn to Stone" and "The Loving Kind" that embody an out-of-body hedonism, poised retro pastiches like the gliding and punchy "The Promise" and sassy rhythmic "Love Is the Key", then up-tempo 80s-flavoured ballad "Rolling Back the Rivers in Time", direct steamy pop of "Fix Me Up" and brilliantly on the button infectiousness of "Miss You Bow Wow". The fluency is palpable across such a range of subtle twists and turns, their confidence such a given they don't ever need to force the point. This is album number five and although it's impossible to fight the feeling of it being the next tidy package from a well oiled production line it's about as hard not to gawp at the electrifying consistency that sneaks and smashes through its twelve tracks--and in that sense maybe you could say it is a little Out of Control, compared to the competition. --James Berry

They should devote their energy into these *new* sounds, which i find exciting pushing the listener to the edge of exploding dreams
great album - but give it time., 18 Nov 2008
When I first got the album I was close to chucking it in the bin, I'd have happily agreed with those reviewers who gave it one or two stars as it sounded so unlike Chemistry or Tangled Up and didn't strike me at all.
A week later I found myself humming some of the tunes on there and for the past week hasn't been out of my CD player, I really like it now. But it took a week or so to grow on me. I'm no professional music reviewer but I had been initially gutted by the album but I'm glad that a few more listens have made me appreciate the album.
soooooooooooooooooooooooo predictable!, 15 Nov 2008
this another album of predictable girls aloud songs.
the songs are ok but dont they ever experiment?
id rather spend my money on the sugababes who are always trying new things it seems if youve heard one girls aloud song youve heard them all.
Could be better., 14 Nov 2008
I have this album & thought i'd get a great stomper of a track like Girl Overboard or Call The Shots but I was sadly mistaken.
I like only half of this album.
It's a different sound for them & don't get me wrong it suits them down to the ground but nothing really screams out at me.
My favourite tracks are Love Is Pain, The Promise & The Loving Kind.
Also Untouchable is a definite grower & certainly doesn't feel as long as it is.
Overall a so-so album from the UK's biggest girl group.
the girls just get better and better!, 12 Nov 2008
with every album the girl seem to get more confident..the last album was amazing..and so is this!
track by track
"the promise" gave the girls another no.1 its a stunning pop track that gets in your head and won't get out! great vocals by sarah! all delivered over a great 60s retro beat 10/10
"the loving kind" may be the best girls aloud song yet..stunning dance track that must be a single! my favourite song on the album! written and produced by the pet shop boys! what more could you ask for 100/10
"rolling back the rivers in time" opens with nadines great vocals before descending into a perfect pop track 10/10
love is the key" opens with a gregorain chant before turning into a rockabilly pop track! great catchy track 9/10
"love is the key" is an electro pop classic! brilliant dancefloor track! 9/10
"untouchable" is a great electro dance track...a welcome change of direction..amazing 10/10
"turn to stone" has a bit soundscape opening! nicola opens the song with a great vocal before electro dance heaven takes over 10/10
"fix me up" is a bit of a funk interlude..okay 6/10
"love is pain" is another killer of a dance track! will fill a dancefloor anywhere! a stand out track like "call the shots" for the dancefloor! great vocals by kimberley! 10/10
"miss you bow wow" is another rockabilly pop track...full of the girls aloud sound but a filler 8/10
"revolution in the head" is another rockabilly track with a twist..ok but not amazing 7/10
"live in the country" opens with a bees buzzing sound..i hate bees! its fast and furious but i cant get over the buzzing! a dance track 7/10
"we wanna party" is like " sound of the underground" part 2..great pop rock track with an 80's retro sound 10/10
a stunning album which shows the girls are going from strenght to strenght!
OK but not their best, 12 Nov 2008
I never thought they could top Tangled Up - and I was right! I like 'Love is the Key' & 'Turned to Stone' but there's nothing here to rival 'Call the Shots' or 'Girl Overboard' - let alone the pop genius of 'Biology' & 'No Good Advice' from previous albums
On the positive side the lyrics make more sense than usual!!

Product Description
Whilst easily one of the most distinctive female pop vocalists of the last ten years, with her hot-headed persona and torching rock vocals barrelling through empowered songs both infectious and tender, P!nk did step back into line somewhat for more one-size-fits-all last album I'm Not Dead. Her voice aside, there was little pull her apart from her peers or to suggest she'd ever again go on to release anything as definitive as her breakthrough album M!ssundaztood. But whether driven by young pretenders like Katy Perry making a grab for her crown or by that perennial emotional motivator--break-up (she was divorced between albums)--Funhouse utterly redeems P!nk. From the front cover through most tracks on the record she stokes the wild-child inside herself that made her famous in the first place, but in most examples there is also evidence of a fostering maturity, whether in the crystal beauty and depth of ballads "Glitter In the Air" or "I Don't Believe You" or the firm-handed command of more built-up tunes like the Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. Joan Jett coarseness of "Sober" or sassy rocker "Boring" that somewhat improbably combines The Dandy Warhols' "Horse Pills" and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' "Get Ready For Love" as though delivered by the Pussycat Dolls. And maturity aside, bold first single "So What" and future-funk swing dance "Bad Influence" are about the catchiest, and indeed gutsiest, things she's delivered in years. --James Berry

If this is the "best" of todays music then it only goes to prove that talent is no longer a requisit.
stop changing the track list!!, 09 Nov 2008

best of 2008, 15 Nov 2008
Best Album of 2008 so far.. (November!) Buy it, enjoy it love it. The only Kings of Leon track I've really enjoyed before was Red Morning Light. This Album has changed all that and I often listen to it on the way to work. I love it.
Buy Van Occupanther by Midlake at the same time for a change of pace and divine aural pleasure. Enjoy!

JUST BUY IT!
If you like/love Pink then this album is for you.

P!NK: THE BEST SO FAR, 15 Nov 2008
I am not going to lie. I am a massive p!nk fan. I love her. So i may be a little biased. But after a love hate relationship with the last two albums I must say this is worth your pennies. Its a beautifully crafted c.d with such ecclectic styles it fits any mood you maybe in.
Theres the first single so what (which I sometimes love and sometimes hate), but the songs which are the most beautiful are the ones sprinkled through the album.
Ave mary a : an amazing rock stomp.
Glitter in the air : a beautiful raw song which made me cry the
first time I heard it
i dont believe you : the most beautifully raw song on the album. MAKE THIS A SINGLE DAMMIT!
BUY THIS ALBUM!
Who wouldn't be moved by Pink, 11 Nov 2008
Entertainment of the highest order, loud proud and down to earth Rock and Roll, don't care what the modernist's call it. The album is not about sweet and honey relationships, but is real life like that anyway. I am going to Liverpool to see her live again, an experience nobody should miss .......... And I am 61 years old ....
OMG, 07 Nov 2008
I LOVE this album. You guys n gals know P!nk is an amazing artist otherwise you wouldn't be lookin on here for her!
This album has got to be my favourite one of hers! Ive had it for 5 days and havnt stopped listening to it. Its fresh and just fantastic.

P!nk rocks!
pink shows her dark red side!, 02 Nov 2008

for the latest album she infuzes the break up of her marriage with her great lyrical ability!
track by track
"so what" the lead single which stormed to the top of the charts with its opening lyric "i guess i just lost my husband" a great chorus pink bearing her soul 10/10
"sober" is a great guitar driven track with great lyrics 9/10
"i don't believe you" is a lovely acoustic track delivered with passion 9/10
"one foot wrong" is a builder of a track with great lyrics and lots of pink power 9/10
"please dont leave me" is a pink classic and a surefire follow up single! stunning lyrics..great vocals..perfect 10/10
"bad influence" is a great pop/rock track all gwen stefani 10/10
"funhouse" follows along nicely in the same vain...great track and a choice for a single 10/10
"crystal ball" is a great acoustic track with personal lyrics 9/10
"mean" is old time rock delivered perfectly with great lyrics 9/10
"its all your fault" is a must for a single release! my personal favourite..great lyrics..delivered with pink power 10/10
"ave maria" is a rocking stomper 10/10
"glitter in the air" is another acoustic number with beautiful lyrics aka tori amos 9/10

pinks latest album is stunning..great personal lyrics..delivered with conviction...she leaves her contemporaries standing at the start line!
an amazing album by a great talent!

So what's everyones' opinion on this one? Ideal for pop/dance lovers i think as usual a good variety on here.Perhaps NOT the best out of the collection but quite a few numbers ones and a few songs on here that deserved better chart positions than given. All in all a good CD,may wait until the price comes down a bit before i buy it myself however.
best of 2008, 15 Nov 2008
Best Album of 2008 so far.. (November!) Buy it, enjoy it love it. The only Kings of Leon track I've really enjoyed before was Red Morning Light. This Album has changed all that and I often listen to it on the way to work. I love it.
Buy Van Occupanther by Midlake at the same time for a change of pace and divine aural pleasure. Enjoy!

They should devote their energy into these *new* sounds, which i find exciting pushing the listener to the edge of exploding dreams
great album - but give it time., 18 Nov 2008
Class Act!, 16 Nov 2008
JUST BUY IT!
If you like/love Pink then this album is for you.
Different to the other 4 but different is exceptional!!!
I say buy it, you wont regret it.
P!nk rocks!
pink shows her dark red side!, 02 Nov 2008
well after the stunning "i'm not dead" cd i thought it couldn't get any better!
when pink came out she was compared to britney spears! however album by album she has shown she is something different..with an unmistakeable personality...she doesn't suffer fools gladly!
for the latest album she infuzes the break up of her marriage with her great lyrical ability!
track by track
"this is how it goes down" is another favourite track..could be a great single!
pinks latest album is stunning..great personal lyrics..delivered with conviction...she leaves her contemporaries standing at the start line!
an amazing album by a great talent!
Excellent CD a must have for any ID fan, 19 Nov 2008
This is the best CD that Il Divo has ever done. Some of the tracks such as "Power of Love, La Promessa, L'alba Del Mondo are just excellent. Their cover of the song Hallelujah there is no words to describe it, simply excellent comes to mind. The song choice on the album is very diverse. It is a must have CD for any fan.
Very good, but could use a little oomph!, 17 Nov 2008
I have just bought this today, and having listened to it, I think it is a really good ablbum, well worth buying. If there were some more songs with a bit more oomph, such as Isobel and some of their other previous songs, I would have given this album 5 stars. However, that aside it is a great album! Go buy it!
Absolutely Devine, 15 Nov 2008
Make sure gou've got a respectable pair of loudspeakers, a strong and clear amplifier, dim the lights, have a drink and prepair for a really great audio experience !
Absolutly devine !
Great songs !
Better than their last album... but then that wouldn't be hard!, 15 Nov 2008
While "The Promise" is better than Il Divo's last album "Siempre", it's still not great. Once you play it through a couple of times, all the songs seem to blend together and there is a boring similarity and a sad lack of original songs. Can these guys actually write songs that are good enough for them to record themselves? Or, as the press often says, are they really just cardboard cut-outs with nice voices and pretty faces??
It seems to be an awkward split of Il Divo standard "take a pop song and belt it out with an operatic twist" and very classical pieces. Oddly, the more classical choices like "Adagio" and "La Promessa" actually seem to work better for them than the awful Spanish "Popera" versions of "The Winner Takes It All" and "The Power of Love", both of which are truly dire. Maybe Il Divo should head off town the classical path as it's where they seem to sound the best.
As the majority of them say they came from the "classical world" you have to wonder if this is a "farewell album" before they head back to their former lives. And honestly... you have to hope so!!
OUTSTANDING!!!, 14 Nov 2008
Well the "Promise " has been fulfilled! Moved to tears on 3 tracks in particular, La Promessa, L'Alba del Mondo (WOW!) and Enamerado. Just read some reviews on the standard CD and I can't beleive what I'm reading! How can anyone say this album is a disappointment? My only fear was that I hated the original Frankie Goes to Hollywood but the guys managed to convince me! I also read someone say that the guys had done no "upbeat" numbers...? Well forgive me - but I love the romance and the sheer joy of hearing these guys voices and talent and don't need anything else but just to listen to everyday music in a TOTALLY different light! Can't WAIT for the tour!

Product Description
Would it be outlandish to suggest that wholesome rugby-shouldered ruddy-faced English piano-pop boys Keane have spent the best part of their two-album career fanning the impression that they exist somewhere between an easy Mothers' Day gift and the album it's ok to give your girlfriend back when you split up, just in order to blow everyone out of the water like 80s neon-pop commandos with the boldness of their third? You know, utilising the element of surprise? Probably, but even though their debut (Hopes & Fears) and its follow up (Under the Iron Sea) may have been broader creative successes than many care to admit, it is true that Perfect Symmetry is a synth-brandishing Tyrannosaurus Rex next to those trundlingly melodic Trojan horses. From the moment "Spiralling", the single that made a nation choke on its Yakult, erupts like a Top of the Pops volcano with flashes of David Bowie, Talking Heads, Erasure, Prefab Sprout and James, amongst others--with the "WHOOOO!" interjections impacting like lava hitting an LA swimming pool and sending cocktails flying--the album is generally as taut, bulky and bronzed as a teen Arnold Schwarzenegger. Old habits die hard and there is still much in the way mid-paced melancholy, but they are sung with clarity and the songwriting stays tight with some deep lyrics and turns of phrase to balance out the vague and which presumably reflect Tom Chaplin's documented decent into addiction. "Playing Along", a beautifully arranged set of textures and gathering emotional bursts, is a particular high. --James Berry

If this is the "best" of todays music then it only goes to prove that talent is no longer a requisit.
stop changing the track list!!, 09 Nov 2008
