Product Description
Anyone looking for the key to ABBA's enduring appeal should look no further than "Voulez Vous" and "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" for their answer. There was an innocence to the Swedish quartet, even when they were singing about one-night stands and the invitations to them. Gold establishes that the band, while appreciated as campy, were actually multifaceted in their execution. "S.O.S." has a raw urgency in its chorus, and "Does Your Mother Know" draws its energy from classic 1950s rock & roll. Likewise, you don't have to be Priscilla to swoon over "Mamma Mia" or "Dancing Queen". And when it comes to drama, those soaring vocals on "The Winner Takes It All" turn the song into a bitter anthem of every relationship that has ever fallen apart. The much-covered "Lay All Your Love on Me" is practically epic. --Steve Gdula

ABBA has made so much amazing music is amazing, and they are the best band that ever lived..
I bet after u listen to this cd, u will want to buy another one, coz they are all amazing.
Thank you ABBA for the music.!!. 400 Million And Counting, 31 Jul 2008
Nineteen of ABBA's best songs are plenty, but you won't tire of them. It is amazing that four Swedes (Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus as writers and Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Fältskog as the main singers) could take such simple English cliches and turn them into pop music magic. Despite sometimes maddeningly simple lyrics, the song arrangements were unnervingly catchy and the multi-level layered compostions are fascinating. The keyboards and synthesizers were used in some of the more ingenious ways during the seventies to produce that unmistakeable ABBA sound. The energy and nearly anthemic enthusiasm eminating from each song marked them all as instant classics, no matter how jaded or synical the listener. It is doubtlful if you read the song list here that you would not know the melody. The one ironic thing about this groups phenomenal success, is that of over 400 million album sales, they only had one number one hit in the US - "Dancing Queen". But it is one heck of a great song.
Every home should have a copy!, 14 Jul 2008
This CD can change your day, your washing up, your chores and your mood into an all singing, all dancing feel good experience. It starts, no messing, straight in there, with Dancing Queen, surely one of the best dance floor fillers of all time. There's no dead wood on this album, all the old favourites are here: Chiquitita, Mamma Mia, Voulez Vous, Thank You For the Music and the beautifully written Winner Takes it All. I admire Benny and Bjorn so much as songwriters since not only do they produce perfect ageless pop songs (and there is such an art to it) but don't forget, their lyrics are written in their second language, not their first. Their talent amazes me and their music makes me feel grrrrreat. I defy anyone to play dancing queen and stand still and not feel that life is good. Worth the money and better than therapy. Extremely pleased with this CD, 02 Mar 2005
ABBA was formed in 1972 by four great Swedish musicians (Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid "Frida" Lyngstad - ABBA, get it?). Featuring wonderful vocals and bouncing instrumentation, plus enjoyable (if somewhat lightweight) lyrics, the group shot to international stardom, dominating charts around the world until their final breakup in 1982. This album was put together in 1993, and contains many of ABBA's most memorable tunes. As an added bonus, the paperwork contains a short history of the group, plus many colorful pictures. Overall, I am extremely pleased with this CD, and highly recommend it to everyone! By they way, I used this CD to introduce my own children to ABBA, and now they walk around singing some of the same songs that I did at their age!
THE BEST GREATEST HITS ALBUM EVER, 12 May 2004
I recently read an article on the most reputable American music magazine, Billboard Magazine, about this album being one of the top sellers worldwide of all time. It has sold 30 Million copies around the world, and here in UK it has sold almost 4 million copies! Then I learned that ABBA has sold over 350 million albums worldwide. Wow! Only the Beatles and Elvis have sold more, accoring to the article. I knew they had many number ones here in UK, but did not know they were so big in the world. The article explained that ABBA was bigger than the Beatles in many Latin American countries, in Russia, Viet Nam, Netherlands (where 3 out of every household owns an ABBA record) and in Australia. I figured out I should give ABBA a try. i needed to understand why so many liked this group, and I did not even own one of their CDs. I had only heard Dancing Queen, Waterloo, and Take A Chance On Me, so I bought this album. I am now an ABBA fan. I usually don't like pop, but ABBA has finally won me over. After several listens, I decided that I have never EVER heard melodies this good. They are fresh, timeless, and like U2's Bono said, "I think ABBA have a pure joy to their music, and that’s what makes them extraordinary!" The music is so joyous even when there is melancholy and drama added. The music is so much more complex than I had given ABBA credit for --- before really listening. My favorite music acts are U2, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, and Bob Dylan. Now ABBA has joined them. I did some research and found other quotes about ABBA from U2 members and others: Bjork: “ABBA saved my life, it’s undeniable. Arrival is a happy record. ‘Dancing Queen’ is the biggest song in pop-music history, pure ecstasy, it makes you want to fly!” Richard Ashcroft, from The Verve: "‘Dancing Queen’ is one of my favourite songs of all time’," "In ‘Dancing Queen,’ taking it as a songwriter, it’s just one of the most perfectly crafted pieces of pop music. It makes me feel good. Life is just moments, you know what I mean? And music’s about capturing those moments. Every time I hear ‘feel the beat of the tambourine/oh yeah’ it makes a chemical react in my brain. Something happens in my body and I feel good!" Elvis Costello: “We stole them like crazy, and they dragged these things into pop music, these big double octave flourishes on the piano that seemed right straight out of Rachmaninoff” The Edge, from U2: “ABBA have written the best pop music of all time.” I agree completely. ABBA is way up there.

Blonde on Blondie, 19 Jul 2008
Excellent CD well put together compilation of Hits - great to listen to well worth buying.
Sheer Brilliance!, 09 Jul 2008
This was the first CD from Blondie I bought at HMV and i'm certainly not sorry that I did.
"Greatest Hits" really is a superb collection with many brilliant house-hold name songs in the track listing. Once more, the sound is excellent and there isn't one bad track on the disc.
Do yourself a favour a buy this CD, you will not regret it as it's the perfect introduction to one of the truely great bands of all time.
THIS CD GOT ME INTO BLONDIE!, 11 Mar 2008
One day, about five years ago I was browsing thought my local supermaket for a cd. This eye catching red cd caught my attention I never heard of Blondie until I bought this cd! "Heart of Glass" and "Atomic" are defiantly my favourite tracks. This is the only Blondie hits complutation to ever be remastered and all the tracks sound great, the front cover is one of the rare photos taken of the group by Chris Rock. Five years on and I know everything about Blondie and they have to be one of my alltime favourite bands. Its a shame a lot people don't know about this amazing band! I recommend this cd above other compluations for the price and the high quality.
Still sound great 20 years later, 02 Aug 2007
If you are in a band and want to retain some artistic control over your music, then please listen to this album. Blondie was and is still one of the best pop groups of its generation. Yes, yes, I know they started off originally as a pseudo punk band, but good bands evolve and that is what Blondie did. Its not often if at all you hear groups singing in French (Sunday Girl and Denis) or the fact that Debbie Harry was rapping 20 years before rap become fashionable.
This album has everything, from the first track with the sublime lyrics... "When I met you at the restaurant, you could tell I was no debutante". Go on try it, you won't be dissappointed.
BLONDIE, 01 Aug 2007
Excellent album!! My g/f loves it!
I bought it for her as a present as she likes Blondie, and it is a truly wonderful piece of work as there is no one bad song on this album!
What else made me happy was the low price for this album too, thats a bargin and I suggest any one into punk/rock today to buy this as its a work of art!

This is the perfect way to hear Madonna: no album filler, just one hit after another. As a singles artist, she works wonders: quick, danceable tunes that are occasionally "controversial" but never set out to change the world (and don't). The Immaculate Collection begins with her earliest work ("Holiday", "Borderline") and matures from there ("Papa Don't Preach", "Like A Prayer"), ending in 1990. The highlight is the inclusion of "Justify My Love", a track recorded specifically for this compilation. One caveat: since Madonna is a true video artist, it'd be even nicer to "see" these songs. --Rob O'Connor

theres not too much anyone can really say about this greatest hits package, other than buy! it is easily the best collection of singles put together, even better than the abba gold collection! 5/5
Ice cube's best album so far., 03 Nov 2008
Michael Jackson helped out alot on this album by designing a new CD lacquoring process. This made it possible for him to give his free copies of this album back to Madonna without her seeming to notice. Of course Madonna being a bit wise and very old didn't really know what CDs are and now always looks confused. The 'immaculation collection' actually refers to the immaculate homogenised grey appearance of collected belly button fluff despite it originating from garments of differing colouration.
THE IMMACULATE COLLECTION, 24 Jul 2008
Madonna scored some of the greatest songs in the 80's and many of them are placed on this compilation album...but these are remixed versions of the album versions.
this is the greatest compelation album ever made...just a shame not all of her successful singles are captured here(whos that girl, true blue,oh father, over and over, and keep it together)but all the songs here are stunning.
Holiday(the first album)-9/10
Lucky Star(the first album)-10/10
Borderline(the first album)-9/10
Like a virgin(like a virgin)-9/10
material girl(like a virgin)-9/10
Crazy for you(vision quest soundtrack)-8/10
Into The Groove(like a virgin)-10/10
Live to tell(true blue)-10/10
papa dont preach(true blue)-10/10
Open your heart(true blue)-10/10
La Isla Bonita(true blue)-10/10
Like A Prayer(like a prayer)-10/10-a great remix
Express Yourself(like a prayer)-10/10-my favourite song of hers
Cherish(like a prayer)-9/10
Vogue(im Breathless)-10/10-a masterclass song.
Justify My Love(exclusive track)-10/10-feels like it should be on the Erotica album which came just over a year later...well its great enough to be!!!
Rescue Me-10/10-another one that i think should have waited to be placed on the Erotica album but again, very good.
all in all a great compelation of hits from her career throughout the 80's to 1990.
recommended to every fan:)
Please think before buying!, 15 Jul 2008
Madonna's music in the 1980s was excellent. But why people would be tricked to buy this is amazing. This came out right after I turned 12 years old and knew immediately not to buy it. Doesn't it seem to good to be true to have "Borderline", "Like A Virgin", "Live To Tell", "Into The Groove", "Like A Prayer", and "Vogue" (the latter song not even being a year old when this was released) all on one disc? When if it seems to too good to be true, it usually is. A friend of mine made a copy for me on cassette 5 years after the release. It was exactly what I thought: they were not the original versions. And to be more direct, they are not even the single versions. People have the tendency to say that this album has the single versions. Not true. All of these songs are re-mixed and edited. They stink to high heaven. That's right, all of them. You are better off saving money and buying her first 4 albums, Madonna (the first album), Like A Virgin, True Blue, and Like A Prayer. And if you care, you can even buy the I'm Breathless album from the Dick Tracy film featuring the overrated "Vogue" song. The greatest thing I love about the UK is that unlike America where I'm from, you guys have so much better taste is music. Your version of her best album and my favorite, Like A Virgin, even had "Into The Groove" added to it. That album alone is a greatest hits! I'm just shocked that people, even reviewers on this site, amazon.co.uk, actually like the I.C. album. Of course, in the US, everyone in there brother loves it (except me, maybe!) The saddest part is that Madonna has never released a double compilation with the original album or single versions of these songs. But she's not stupid. She knows people are still dumb enough to buy it! But where is her first killer single, "Everybody"? Many people don't even know it was her first single! She even should have minused "Justify My Love" and "Rescue Me" and added "Angel" and "Dress You Up". But since those are new songs, people think they are really getting a treasure: a greatest hits and two new songs. Like we all know, everyone's a sucker one or more times in their life! Thanks for reading, Joseph
A good album from the Queen of Pop, 25 Jun 2008
This album is not too bad, contains 17 great tracks.
Allthough there is one let down, none of them are the proper single/album versions. They are all remix edits or extended versions for this compilation.
All re-recored using Q sound, makes the tracks sound very different from the orginal, in some cases better (Live To Tell and Like A prayer). But just makes other tracks sound awful (Lucky Star, La Isla Bonita).
Personally I think if Madonna used all the proper single versions this album would have done much better and also if it included hits such as True Blue, Dress you up, Who's that girl and Causing A Commotion.
With rumours of Madge releasing a 25 year box set after she has finished releasing the singles from Hard Candy, hopefully all the great songs from here and one's that were not included here will be on that. More importantly hopefully it will feature the proper single versions also.
I still recommend this album to those who do not know much about madonna's earlier music. However I see this as a remix album rather than a greatest hits.

The most hot-buttered of all soul singers, Barry White is an artist whose CDs come with a purpose. To say what that purpose is, is not for a family Web site--but it involves that thing that Mommy and Daddy do at night with the bedroom door closed. All-Time Greatest Hits collects the essential White and Love Unlimited Orchestra tracks onto a packed CD. Are 20 cuts too much? Not with Viagra. That's a kind of medicine that grownups take. --Gavin McNett

HITS! HITS! HITS!, 06 Jan 2009

Satin Soul From The Walrus Of Love, 14 Jan 2008
Unlike the other reviewers I AM old enough to remember Barry White the first time around though I too enjoyed Ally McBeal.
BW first got into music as a musician & later as a talent spotter for record companies & then moving into the production side.
His first big hit was Love Unlimited's "Walking In The Rain" which featured BW speaking on the telephone to his girl friend.
Right from this early track (which charted in both the UK & the USA in the early 70s) the BW 'sound' could be heard: romantic strings, slushy vocals over a strong rhythm.
This album doesn't stray from the sound at all, all the tracks feature the same kind of voice (bar the 2 instrumentals), similar sounding songs & very similar arrangements.
Highlights for me (as a fan of this music) include "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love Babe" which has a very infectious beat as does "You're The First" which is a bit more up-tempo and the lively "What Am I Gonna Do With You".
Other really good tunes include "Let The Music Play" and "I'll Do For You Anything You Want", which again are more up-tempo with a catchy chorus.
Perhaps the most distinctive song on the album is "You See The Trouble With Me", which shows BW injecting a little more obvious 'disco' into his standard sound.
Although very much 'of his time' BW was never held in very high esteem by 'soul' fans who though his music too MOR but now - 30+ years on - they sound fresh & so much more 'real' than today's bland R'n'B.
Put simply, BW could sing!
Like one BW song & you will almost certainly like them all - trouble is if you don't like them all chances are you won't like any!
Easy decision then as to whether to buy this album or not - either 20 tracks of sheer bliss or sheer hell!
(I own the album)
See, The Trouble With Me..., 01 May 2006
Like the previous reviewer I, too, grew to be a Barry White fan from enjoying the wonderful Ally McBeal - although I had heard his songs many times before but didn't get to truly engage with them until they were showcased on said programme (am I a marketeer's dream?).
Nope, I'm not a sad old romantic (far from it), proving that there is more to Barry White than a sex soundtrack. These are well-written songs that just scream to be sung and danced to. You may not recognise the titles straight away, but you're bound to recognise the songs, they're all classics. This particular compilation should whet your appetite for a more thorough exploration of Mr White's discography. Laid back, catchy and, yes, like John Cage on Ally McBeal, THEY MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD! Is that a decent enough reason to buy this Barry White compilation? I think so...
Qualified to satisfy; the best of Barry White on one CD, 03 Apr 2003
I am eternally grateful to Alley McBeal for introducing the incredible music of Barry White to me. The name has always been familiar to me, but I’m not quite old enough to have been properly exposed to the man’s music. After watching my favorite character John Cage psych himself up with Barry White music each week on television, I knew I had to have a Barry White CD, and it had to feature You’re the First, the Last, My Everything. This All-Time Greatest Hits album, packing twenty hits from 1973-1979 onto one disc, pretty much sells itself. I know there are lengthier collections available now, but this remains the best one-CD ensemble of Barry White staples you will find. I do believe that several of these tracks are somewhat edited from the longer versions featured on the original albums, but I don’t have a problem with this. I wanted an authoritative introduction to the man’s music, and that is exactly what this album delivers. The original, full-length versions of his songs are all out there waiting for me to get around to buying all of his albums. I really don’t even know where to begin in terms of discussing these 20 tracks; every song on here is incredible. In the liner notes, you can see where each song peaked on the R&B and/or pop charts as well as find out the original album each song was taken from. The songs I am particularly enamored with are I’m Gonna Love You Just a Little More, Baby; Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe; You’re the First, the Last, My Everything; Let the Music Play; You See the Trouble With Me; and Your Sweetness Is My Weakness. I might point out that two of these tracks are instrumentals: Love’s Theme (which is instantly recognizable) and Satin Soul. On each and every track, Barry is just laying down that soul groove in his incredibly cool, untouchable way. Obviously, that deep, silky voice is famous for its romantic powers, but, speaking as someone with no one at this time to create the appropriate mood for, this music is also well suited for helping you mellow out and relax after a long day. When you need a little confidence boost, follow the example of Alley McBeal’s John Cage; Barry White is the man. You don’t listen to Barry White music; you experience it.
It's the best love pumpin' music in town - yeah., 11 Feb 2000
Barry smoothes you into a world full of passion, romance and sweat. Buy it now - it's fine music.
A very amusing cd that I am almost embarrased to own, 14 Nov 1999
I am embarrassed to admit that I bought this cd. I have become a bit of an Ally McBeal fan and songs by Barry White songs are played quite frequently in the show. So, I decided to give it a try and get an album. And now, I am embarrassed to admit that I really enjoy it! Barry has the greatest voice, as most ladies already know! There are songs on here that everyone knows and a few songs that are new to me. Many of the songs do sound similar - sometimes this is not a bad thing, but sometimes they are a bit too similar. However, I do enjoy listening to this cd and often catch myself singing along. If nothing else, it's great to throw in when you are with friends and watch everyone laugh... and then start singing along.

Product Description
The reunion that inspired this collection was of debatable wisdom--the title of the rather limp comeback single, "Tell Me When", couldn't help but prompt the response "About a decade ago, you daft old buggers"--but the collection itself is, almost by definition, unimpeachable. The Human League at their best performed that rarest of feats--defined a moment, and transcended it. Any reputation that can survive a shocker like "The Lebanon"--it of the oft-quoted, rarely bettered and, frankly, still hilarious "And where there used to be some shops / Is where the snipers sometimes hide" lyrical own goal is built on sturdy foundations indeed. The songs on Greatest Hits are, simply put, as good as pop gets: "Don't You Want Me", "Mirror Man", "Fascination" and, well, all of them, amount to the definitive exercise in storming the charts entirely on one's own terms. Before The Human League, bands were supposed to choose between being cool and being successful: the indie underachiever ethic was beginning to exert its clammy grip on the alternative sector. The Human League, like ABC at around the same time, were too smart to fall for any such nonsense--what was the point of pop if it wasn't popular? And this is why people still love the songs on this album and nobody talks all that much about The Close Lobsters. The history of popular music is a history of cheap, disposable pop music for kids triumphing over serious, intelligent rock music for grown-ups (The Jacksons' "I Want You Back" still fills dance floors; Genesis's "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" reliably empties rooms). The Human League joined the winning side, and taught it to play better than ever. --Andrew Mueller

Were you expecting this?, 01 Oct 2006
I would like to take this opportunity to express my feelings not only about this album but also about the Human League who are one of my favourite bands and an inspiration, not only for their music but their togetherness as a band.
Firstly, the Greatest Hits album. The only track I'm not too keen on is the remix of 'Don't You Want Me' at the end, which I find a bit tacky (couldn't Virgin have put 'Heart Like A Wheel' on instead?). The other tracks on the album are of at least a good standard, with my favourites being 'Love Is All That Matters', 'Together In Electric Dreams', 'Human', 'Mirror Man' and 'Tell Me When' which was the song that introduced me to the band. Overall it is a superb collection of fine electronic music.
Secondly, the Band. Despite a turbulent and troubled past during their 25 year history (30 if you go back to the original line-up of Phil, Martin Ware & Ian Craig Marsh), the trio of Phil, Joanne & Susan deserve credit for sticking together & keeping themselves going (at times against the odds) and have every right to be proud of what they have achieved. For me, they are the original masters of electronic pop and having seen them at the Manchester Apollo last year, they proved they can still do the business. I feel they will be seen as an influence by many others in the electronic music world for many years to come and I must admit that if it wasn't for the Human League, I probably wouldn't have got into electronic music.
A Greatest Hits Ever Done by H.L, 13 Feb 2006
If you love 80's Music Especially New Waves Buy this Collection, Human League One of the Best 80's Bands in the UK and U.S.
Don't You Want The Human League ?, 26 Nov 2001
This Greatest Hits package is basically an update of their 1988 compilation which I already own on tape, with their 1989-1995 material thrown in for good measure... not that's there much of it. As the previous reviewer stated, they had their wilderness years in the late-80's and into the mid-90's (producing a lot of dross), with a return to form on their 1995 album Octopus. However, the compilers really should have included their only decent single from this era, the highly-catchy Heart Like A Wheel, together with the Top 20 single from Octopus, One Man In My Heart. Moreover, they could have payed slightly more attention to their late-70's experimental phase aside from including the 1982 re-release of Being Boiled (originally a 1978 indie-release), with the inclusion of their unworldly single Empire State Human. A chronologically-correct song-list would have also allowed non-fans to track the interesting development of the band through from 1978 to 1995. The shoddy Snap-remix of Don't You Want Me? is also surplus to requirements and thoroughly unneccesary. However, gripes aside, this is probably the best compilation of the League's material out there, and as such comes recommended to the as yet uninitiated, quite simply because it contains a multitude of classic pop tunes (note that I did'nt mention the lyrics !) I've just seen them at a 1,000 sell-out concert in Basingstoke (of all places !) and they can still do it live !
A great album!, 14 Feb 2001
This is the only Human League album you'll ever need! Out of all of their albums only Dare, which houses 'Don't You Want Me', gets any real critical acclaim, but the best tracks from that are on this album! As this collection proves, The Human League, made great music throughout their whole career. Even during the 'wilderness years' (in the U.K. anyway) from '85-'94. This album also includes the best track of all, Together In Electric Dreams, a solo track by Phil Oakey. There are two or three weak tracks, such as the terrible Snap Remix and 'Stay With Me Tonight'. But the rest are classics! Every home should have a Human League album, and this is the one!
Great CD ý really takes you back to the 80ýs, 14 Nov 1999
Wow, try to pick one favourite record from this lot - mine would have to be 'Don't You Want Me' closely followed by all the rest. A really good collection of nostalgic tracks - especially if you were a teenager in the early eighties.

ABBA IS THE BEST!!!, 17 Oct 2008
This cd is amazing, it sold over 26 million the year it came out, and now that it has been released it still is selling, ABBA has sold over 7,000 cd's every day!!!

1. Dancing Queen
2. Take A Chance On Me
3. Chiquitita
4. Voulez-Vous
5. Gimmie! Gimmie! Gimmie! (A Man After The Midnight)
6. Sooooooooo much more...
And there are amazing songs that capture the heart, like
1. The Winner Takes It All

3. Soooooooo much more...
HITS! HITS! HITS!, 06 Jan 2009
theres not too much anyone can really say about this greatest hits package, other than buy! it is easily the best collection of singles put together, even better than the abba gold collection! 5/5
Ice cube's best album so far., 03 Nov 2008
Michael Jackson helped out alot on this album by designing a new CD lacquoring process. This made it possible for him to give his free copies of this album back to Madonna without her seeming to notice.
So, | | |
