Not as good as Encore, 17 Nov 2008
Pleasant CD with some excellent tracks but overall lacks something Encore and the 1st CD had almost a bit sad as if they had come to the end of the road! I would say buy the DVD which shows the choir live!
Great way to add to an already surperb collection!, 10 Nov 2008
The previous two offerings by the Fron Male Voice Choir have been outstanding in quality, and this new release is no different. Featuring a new collection of songs, the excellence that this choir brings to the music world is unbelievable!
Welsh choirs have always been known for their musical talent, and it's certainly no wonder the Fron Choir is on their third release!

Best Xmas album ever, 07 Oct 2008
This CD is a delight capturing the sparkle and fun of Xmas. It is light classical music at its very best. I play Troika and I know the festive season has begun.
Erratum, 19 Jul 2005
I might well write my previous review of this album anonymously - the theme-tune for the TV coverage of the London Olympics is NOT the Bacchanale from Glazunov's 'The Four Seasons', but the music which the late Ron Goodwin wrote for the film 'The Trap'. The two tunes share an exhilarating, wintry feel, but that is no excuse. Apologies to Ron, and to any readers misled by my error!
a surprise buy, 27 Dec 2004
Ive had this cd for sometime. I must have bought in its first incarnation. This was also a surprise buy because I was looking hard for a good xmas cd at the time. I saw it. Heard it in the cd booth, & bought it!! Its one of the best xmas cds around. Go buy you will not be disappointed!!
Simply Wonderful Listening, 21 Dec 2001
I have tried to buy this again for two years and I am thrilled it has been re-released. The CD is filled with many classical tunes that featured as THE Christmas TV tunes in my childhood and teens e.g. the Timex advert. Great tunes combined with good artists and best of all, not what you hear playing in all the supermarkets! A truely "Classey" classic that I would recommend to anyone who likes good music.

I have this CD on constant repeat! The music is so varied but holds your attention every step of the way. Bocelli's voice is one you just have to fall in love with. His "Romanza" is 1 of my favourites but "Vivo Per Lei" has me hooked also. GET THIS CD!!!!!!
Almost perfect, 13 Jan 2008
There's not much to add to other people's reviews of this fine album. My only gripe, and it's a small one, is that he recorded Vivo Per Lei in Spanish with Marta Sanchez, as Vivo Por Ella, and in my opinion it's a much better, more romantic version. If you can find their version, add it to your mp3 player. Apart from that, this is a great album.
Treat yourself and discover a master of his art!, 26 Dec 2007
To me Andrea Bocelli is the only person to truly cross the devide of popular music and opera. His voice is a classical instrument - within the same note he can switch to so many different emotions.
Opera critics enjoy making their little world inaccessible - but Andrea takes your hand and leads you to a new universe of music.
I don't speak Italien but enjoy a sense of what he is singing about through his interpretations. Buy this CD and you'll be won over, and probably dip into his previous works.
If you research his life, you will see he's a great inspiration.
Magnificent, 07 Dec 2007
I purchased this because I was a huge fan of Con Te Partiro and the English language version which is the duet Time to Say Goodbye with Sarah Brightman. The man's voice and vocal range are absolutely outstanding, and the tracks on this album allow him to show that off to full effect. A great album for fans of Bocelli, or anyone who misses Pavarotti.
Not Completely the Best, 12 Nov 2007
Of course Andrea Bocelli is always great to listen to.
However, I don't want to be a kiljoy here but, how can a Bocelli album be described as 'the best' without him singing the brilliant 'Miserere'?

Product Description
The success of the Fron Male Voice Choir's debut album, Voices of the Valley, was so vast that a follow up was inevitable. Voices of the Valley Encore is actually much more than a lazy cash-in from the world's oldest boy-band (ages range from 16 to 60). Timed to coincide with the choir's 60th anniversary, the project features erudite direction from Ann Atkinson and instrumental accompaniments from Jon Cohen, and the "boys" once again get to sing their way through a heady mix of pop standards ("Yesterday"), hymns ("Amazing Grace") and even a splash of opera ("Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves" from Verdi's Nabucco). There's also some filmic material ("Exodus") and a rousing West-End style finale in the shape of "The Rhythm of Life," featuring Michael Ball. It's an encore worthy of an ovation. --Danny McKenna

poor, 19 Jun 2008
This could be any reasonably competent male voice choir. I WAS VERY DIASAPPOINTED WITH IT. It did not have the depth and resonance and passion of a 'proper' Welsh male voice choir like Treorchy.
It seems like a sanitised version.
Nowhere near good enough!!!
OK as aural wallpaper, 21 Jan 2008
Sorry but this just doesn't sound right. I bought the disc for the choir but the backing is too intrusive.
I'll play it from time to time but there are better recordings. There's too much commerce in this one, not enough passion.
Disappointing , 16 Jan 2008
I loved the first CD, but think this is very disappointing in comparison. The life and the passion of the first one seems lacking. There's too much emphasis on the backing and arrangements, and that then completely overshadows the choir. I personally think that the boys' voices don't need all that complicated background stuff at all. For me, it was boring, and completely unmoving, and definitely didn't showcase their wonderful voices.
Welsh Choirs, 21 Dec 2007
I bought this purely from the TV advertisement. I'm sorry but I find this choir tame and insipid. I've some great CDs in my collection with magnificent Welsh choirs raising the hairs on the back of my neck. Some of these choirs leave me emotionally uplifted. Not so with Voices from the Valley. To paraphrase a famous Irish rugby captain "Where's your ******* pride and emotion"?
Welsh Voices, 02 Dec 2007
I bought this album because I enjoyed the first one so much which is everything you would expect of lovely Welsh voices, however I found that this Encore, although it has a good selection of songs and sounds like a good choir, unlike the first, it did not live up to my expectations of a great Welsh Male Voice Choir second time around. It is worth buying for easy listening.

Product Description
It's a tale fit for a Hollywood blockbuster: a 60-strong Welsh male choir, originally formed in 1947, plucked from obscurity and transformed into the most unlikely boyband in the world (or at least oldest - the average age is 60, the combined age 3974). In fact, their rise from the fringes to fame is already being primed for a major movie next year (produced by Zygi Kamasa of Bend It Like Beckham and Good Night and Good Luck fame) - but that's another story. First we have Voices Of The Valley, an album that shows us precisely why Universal signed a group originally created to sing goodwill songs to the Welsh communities during the harsh post-war years. Comprised of rousing, traditional songs like "Jerusalem", "Danny Boy" and "Abide With Me", and interpretations of popular tunes such as the opener "Sailing", "Unchained Melody" and "You Raise Me Up", it doesn't take long for the logic of the enterprise to strike: the beautiful, graceful sound of 60 men booming joyously through your speakers and the combination of stirring vocal prowess and orchestral embellishments - is truly overwhelming. --Danny McKenna

Disappointing., 14 Jul 2008
Excellent voices overpowered by incongruous orchestral accompaniment. The richness of the voices was spoiled for one who wants a male voice choir to be just that. This cd does more than it says on the tin, unfortunately.
Harmonious but lacking Spirit, 08 Feb 2008
I was disappointed with this CD. It felt all very studio-managed. Yes, the songs are nicely sung; but there seemed to be no great emotion or force to the singing. I also I agree with one of the other reviewers that the accompaniment was too pronounced. For a male voice choir you want some power and energy. This might have set the hairs rising on the back of a small dog, but not me. Maybe in the 21st century it has to be sufficiently bland to appeal to a wide audience in different countries.
The Art of "Sailing" , 11 Nov 2007
The combination of this arrangement along with the strong, rich male voices makes "Sailing" one the world's great choral masterpieces in my opinion. Most music only reaches our ears; this pieces reaches our hearts.
This is art. Although it seems magical it almost transcends explanation and lifts the spirit of mankind out of itself for just a moment in time.
"Sailing" reaches us most deeply at the very point when the arrangement modulates and allows the full harmony of these voices to soar. When this takes place in the CD it makes the hair stand out on the back of your neck. My eyes teared up and I knew that my deepest self had been touched.
Wonderful music but . . ., 02 Jan 2007
I have always appreciated Welsh male choirs. Some of the great songs stir my soul . . . when I can understand the lyrics. Singing in Welsh may be patriotic, but I can't sing along. I was disappointed by the tracks sung in Welsh. Couldn't English and Welsh versions have been included? Surely that wouldn't have set back the sectarian fragmentation of the British Isles by too much.
Mae hen Wlad fy nhadau yn annwyli i mi (The old land of my fathers is dear to me), 24 Dec 2006
WHEN LAND OF MY FATHERS IS ON THE HIGHEST VOLUME ON THE HI-FI, THE HAIRS STAND AND THE GOOSE FLESH APPEARS AND THE HAND GOES TO MY HEART. ITS A VERY PATRIOTIC SONG FOR MYSELF AND WELSH MEN AND WOMEN ALIKE. As soon as "Sailing" starts to play i have images of the Falklands War (I wasnt born then, i was here in 87, but my mum always said "ooh, it reminds me of when our lads went to the Falklands, they played this song many times")so as a fellow PARA i feel very proud of our lads in all services of the forces. The whole album is a beauty and should be heard by everyone. and i mean everyone. Phenominal heart wrentching beauty. BLOODY BRILLIANT MUN!

Product Description
Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace is a departure from his Adiemus recordings into the more conventional territory of large-scale choral and orchestral writing, though his customary passion for mixing languages remains in full force with texts in English, Latin and French. Jenkins has said that The Armed Man was inspired by the "L'Homme armé" masses which were popular in the 16th century, and he makes this debt clear with passages written in a neat pastiche of Palestrina-style renaissance polyphony. There are also echoes of earlier and later styles, including plainchant, medieval ballads, James Barry-style horn writing (think Goldfinger) and even a direct quote from Rigoletto (the choir imitates wind sounds at one point as in Act 3 of Verdi's opera). The smorgasbord manages to hold together, probably because Jenkins' obvious sincerity shines through every note. The London Philharmonic Orchestra plays beautifully, and treble Tristan Hambleton performs his solo with ethereal clarity. The National Youth Choir sings with vigour and accuracy, even if the young sopranos sound a little thin at the top of their range. If you liked the soundtrack to The Mission, this should press all the right buttons. --Warwick Thompson

Emotional music, 29 May 2008
This piece just reduces me to tears - probably because my closet friend served in both the Falklands War and the first Gulf War.
A most moving piece of music - to anyone's ears, if only they've got ears to hear.
I am singing it with my choir this year and find it almost impossible to sing it without welling-up.
Worth every penny of the CD's price.

I'm sorry but anyone who thinks this is good music needs to get out more. At best it's second-rate, at worst it's meretricious pap. For anti-war music listen to Britten's War Requiem, for settings of the mass listen to any one of a hundred composers who have done it better. Stick to Adiemus Karl, you'll never hack it as a proper composer.
surprised, 30 Apr 2008
I wasn't keen on Adiemus, and wasn't expecting to like this, though I had heard bits on classic fm that grabbed my attention (while working with the radio on).
However, I do find this enjoyable from start to finish, skipping over the muezzin's prayer (which I could hear out my window in certain locales). Maybe it is not complex, but there are surprising moments and there is plenty of passion throughout.
Obviously this is something that splits opinion, so I must be a prole. Yes, I even like Andrew Lloyd Webber at times. But then I also listen to Arvo Part, to Tavener and others in abundance, alongside the likes of Ali Farka Toure and Santana (in his prime), so... I consider myself to be without baggage but not without ears. It's worth a listen. Make up your own mind.

Brilliant!, 18 Feb 2008

Disappointing., 14 Jul 2008

The collection mixes traditional carols (so you can sing along and relive those days in the choir) with slighly lesser known Christmas fare. As you would expect of King's, all the carols are extremely well executed and with over 76 minutes of playing time you've got the chance to pig out on a good few mince pies. Bliss!

Product Description
The John Rutter Christmas Album brings together most of the composer's Christmas songs and carols as well as several of his festive choral arrangements, including a rousing "Joy to the World" and the energetic "I saw three ships". Most of the 23 tracks have been taken from extant discs on Rutter's Collegium label although two, "Dormi, Jesu" and "Sans Day carol", were recorded especially for this release. Rutter's first two published compositions, written while he was still a teenager, were Christmas pieces for choir, namely the glorious "Nativity Carol" and the infectious "Shepherd's Pipe Carol". Although very different in character, these two carols (for which Rutter also wrote the test) display the composer's sense of joy and wonder at the Christmas story. More than 30 years later, those sentiments are still there in pieces such as the melting "Dormi, Jesu", commissioned by King's College, Cambridge for the 1999 Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. Under the direction of the composer, the youthful voices of the Cambridge Singers are on sparkling form, as are the City of London Sinfonia and vocal soloists Gerald Finley and Stephen Varcoe. This album deserves to be played over and over--and not just at Christmas. --Rebecca Agnew

Christmas Joy, 07 Mar 2008
I thought this CD had got lost in our recent house move and was delighted when it turned up in one the last boxes to be opened. I immediately rushed to listen again even though it is early March and am once again entranced by the warmth and beauty of the music and the singing. You really can play this CD anytime in the year and that is what I am doing now! If you buy it you will not be disappointed!
WOW - A 'must have' for Christmas, 22 Dec 2007
This CD is just fantastic - be blown away by The Cambridge Singers renditions of John Rutter's Christmas album - the definative version of some of the prettiest and most lyrical Christmas choral music you will ever hear. I just keep playing it over and over again.
Choir members will be inspired to get out their music to re-visit any of these beautiful carols they have sung in the past.
This would make the perfect stocking filler for anyone who appreciates choral singing from a choirboy to your grandmother - or just indulge yourself.
Beautiful CD., 20 Nov 2007
The more technical merits have already been pointed out. I have this on in the background now as its very relaxing. I recommend this as a Christmas treat to yourself, it is like being at an upmarket Carol concert (in a good way!) and when the music stops you find yourself putting it on again and again.
John Rutter's Box of Delights, 26 Dec 2002
This compilation of some of John Rutter's work should be in everyone's Christmas stocking. With sixteen of his own original creations he has added seven arrangements he has made of traditional Christmas music and that written by other composers. What is useful is the grouping of the music into parts - Prologue, The Christmas Story, Christmas Night, Christmas Reflections, Christmas Joy and Epilogue - which allows the listener to select a long or short programme if required. The performances, drawn from sources spanning the years 1985 to 2002, are sheer delight from beginning to end. The Cambridge Singers, with soloists Ruth Holton, Gerald Finlay and Stephen Varcoe, excel with the various moods and rhythms throughout, and the City of London Sinfonia adds stylish and colourful support. The direction of this wonderful festival of music for Christmas is in the capable hands of John Rutter himself who inspires his singers and players. If I were to single out any items from the programme, who could possibly resist the lilting rhythms of `Jesus child' and the `Donkey Carol', and the jaunty bounce of `We wish you a merry Christmas'? On the reflective side, the various lullabies all receive sensitive performances. If you are looking for the perfect combination of joy and reverence, not only at Christmas but at any time of year, you could not possibly rival this CD.

Brilliant!, 18 Feb 2008
However, I don't want to be a kiljoy here but, how can a Bocelli album be described as 'the best' without him singing the brilliant 'Miserere'?

poor, 19 Jun 2008
Amazon Review a bit off, 10 Aug 2008
I would guess that the Amazon reviewer Warwick Thompson is under 25.
Anyway, he writes as if he is, judging by his use of the English language
("think Goldfinger", eeeeeeeeh!).
He also believes that L'Homme Armee is 16th century. Oh dear.
I find the reviews of the actual buyers much more to the point, wheher positive or negative.
Pity that the text of the Amazon reviewer is displayed at the top.
OK? Emotional music, 29 May 2008
This piece just reduces me to tears - probably because my closet friend served in both the Falklands War and the first Gulf War.
A most moving piece of music - to anyone's ears, if only they've got ears to hear.
I am singing it with my choir this year and find it almost impossible to sing it without welling-up.
Worth every penny of the CD's price.
Meretricious pap, 26 May 2008
I'm sorry but anyone who thinks this is good music needs to get out more.
The worst piece of music I have ever performed., 10 Mar 2008
I have been singing since I was a chorister at the age of 8 and I am sorry, but 17 years later this the only peace that I would never perform again. It is musically uninspiring and monotonous. I am sorry that I will be accused of being elitist but I know of no redeeming features for this work. Truly professional, 07 Dec 2007
Having just heard the CD, I am warmed by the quality of ALL the tracks, the singing is beautiful and sung so professionally.
If you are looking for a traditional Carol CD, then I would definately recommend this one, Perfect Christmas Escape, 13 Dec 2003
Settle down in a comfy chair with a mince pie and glass of wine and turn up the volume - pure escapism from the hassles of Christmas shopping! The collection mixes traditional carols (so you can sing along and relive those days in the choir) with slighly lesser known Christmas fare. As you would expect of King's, all the carols are extremely well executed and with over 76 minutes of playing time you've got the chance to pig out on a good few mince pies. Bliss!
Incredible. I wish I'd been there, 05 Nov 2008
One of the first things we experience on this wonderful DVD is Katherine Jenkins' sense of humour, natural warmth, and un-diva-ish personality, which shine through the whole performance. And talk about pride in being Welsh! :-) Good for her! This DVD is a treat from beginning to end. Wonderful picture quality; super sound; and then there are Katherine Jenkins, Juan Diego Flórez, Serendipity, and the National Symphony Orchestra, all giving of their best. Fantastic!
For three of the Extras, just close your eyes and listen--the picture quality is truly abysmal, but that voice, that voice....
Katherine comes home, 23 Jul 2008
The venue of course is Wales, Margam Park, and this 75 minute edition of Katherine's homecoming nicely promotes her Rejoice album which was also released in 2007.
The songs are a mix of Rejoice hits plus concert favourites, and Katherine provides plenty of audience chat, and of course those giggles, to make this a comfortably familiar and entertaining experience. Good sound, plenty of camera angles, a few extras (four extra songs recorded previously) make this an excellent KJ experience.
High points are a `Delilah' good enough to please fellow Welshman Tom Jones, a lovely duet with Juan Diego Florez of the popular `La Donna e mobile', and an emotional `Requiem for a Soldier' tribute to the war casualties of recent years.
Funny are the pink boots combined with THAT white dress of the 2007 tour, while the other `frocks' (in her words) get better as the night progresses. The familiar are of course the obligatory `Time to say Goodbye' and the timeless `We'll Meet Again' fully deserving the standing ovation it received.
The finale is predictable, the Welsh national anthem is sung with the Welsh flag draped over her shoulders, which makes the audience tearfully patriotic and the rest of the world jealous!
Picture quality, 20 Jan 2008
A previous reviewer had doubts regarding the picture quality, and I think he is right. Perhaps it is due to the fact that the TV set has to do an NTSC to PAL conversion, and something is lost in the conversion process.
Why have the makers not given us a PAL version? Nevertheless there is much to enjoy on this DVD. T Powell
Picture quality below par?, 29 Dec 2007
A beautiful performance, but (in my opinion and based on results from my DVD player) the picture quality is not as good as the original TV transmission, and lacks clarity. Perhaps this is because the DVD has been issued in NTSC format instead of PAL. The performance was recorded in the UK (Margam Park in Wales) so why use NTSC when our own PAL system could have produced better quality pictures? Perhaps the producers could issue a second edition in PAL!
"A pleasure to watch and listen", 02 Dec 2007
I agree with the two previous reviews. Katherine is a class apart from anything "Singing Wales" can offer, has a good sense of humor and is a pleasing personality. The first DVD "Live at Llangollen" was a joy to watch. "Katherine in the Park" is even more enjoyable as well are the extras. Having lived in North Wales, does not mean I am Welsh, neither I wished I was Welsh, but I like the country and the people. Do I have to say more......
