Silver Bells, Golden Stars, 06 Jan 2008
Just when I thought a nostalgic Christmas was over I came across this super 2 CD set from NotNow. The set boasts 50 songs and a whole host of well known stars too. It is good to have a mix of both American and British stars represented and there are even duets.
This is a welcome addition to the Christmas titles offering something just a little different and with Eartha Kitt, David Whitfield, Dickie Valentine, Bing, Dick, Frank, Perry, Nat, Ella, Peggy and Judy to serenade you whilst you cook that traditional roast turkey what more could you ask for?
Favourite songs for me are "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"; "Silver Bells"; "Santa Claus got Stuck in My Chimney" and the traditional carols.
Good sound throughout and attractive packaging make this a great gift too.
disappointed by a slow cd, 23 Dec 2007
If you like old fashioned slow songs then you may love this, if you are of the older generation you may love this cd. But me, being 36, hated it, it was far too slow and boring and a complete waste of money, I won't listen again, it will make a good Christmas present for my wifes parents - they will love it - I just hope they don't play it in front of me!
Sorry to be so negetive, but like all Amazon reviews you can only say what you think!! If you are looking for upbeat lively music look else where!

wizzard and slade!?, 02 Dec 2007
This would have been the perfect christmas CD - but it is missing 2 of the most important songs in popular music christmas history - wizzard and slade! Disappointing.
poor collection, 30 Nov 2007
A very poor collection of christmas songs. Why is it so hard to release a CD with all the known favourites on it with originals. Every year i have to make my own.
And since when was Mad World ever a christmas song? Just because it was a christmas number one, doesnt make it christmas in the slightest. What is wrong with these people. Its the same story with East 17 and Stay another day. Nothing christmas about it. Big deal, was number one at christmas and the video had some snow in it. Get over it.
And proper crimbo from bo-selecta. Are they having a laugh at us mugs? It just says it all. And then Steps instead of the original classic!!! That was a novelty song and should not be on a Christmas CD.
Some good songs... a lot of bad covers though!, 28 Oct 2007
I feel a little bit ripped off by this CD set... you read the list of songs and it sounds great, but then you play many of them and they're really bland soul-less covers, cheesy pop versions, or versions by no one you've heard before.
I thought I'd found a gem here, with all the great songs, but sadly its not the case. Several of the songs are the versions you DO want, such as Santa Baby and Rocking Around The Christmas Tree, but if you're wanting all of the song versions you know well, this might not be for you.
A Simple Solution., 11 Apr 2007
It is a sad and simple truth that the perfect Xmas album does not exist, since no single record company or collection thereof own all the rights to all the songs you are going to want to hear. There is, however, a straightforward solution.
1)Buy this album. It is, despite its shortcomings, fantastic value(I got my copy for less than a fiver), it is after all a triple CD pack with 60 songs on it.
2)Buy "The best Christmas Album in the world...ever!"(yes there is some overlap but it does feature just about all those missing songs or superior versions that are required).
3)Make the "Most Perfect Xmas Album in the World Ever" by combining the above. If you own or have access to a computer(which I'm guessing you do if you're reading this) then it won't be too hard.

Bought this to add some Christmas cheer to the office... we ended up playing "spot the Christmas connection" !! Is a bit like those cheap LPs we used to buy that covered the latest pop records....
It's the most wonderful time of the year, 26 Nov 2007
Wonderful! I'm not a fan of the chessey Christmas stuff so that fact there's no slade is not a problem for me. If however you like to have seasonal music in the house to get you ready for the big day or to keep you company while doing the Christmas baking, then this is the one for you, play it loud and sing along or have it in the background when people are over, it's a winner. You even have a disc of carols for opening your pressies on Christmas morning.
Wheres the real versions, 25 Nov 2007
Eartha Kitt - Santa Baby - Aint here, we get miss piggy and kylie. No Pogues with Fairytale of New York. No Do they Know its Christmas. No Slade. How can you have a Xmas album without Slade. No Wham Last Xmas. Not even Stop the Cavalry by Jona Lewie. This is an awful collection, probably bought on the cheap by people that dont want to spend money on a decent collection.
smelly xmas, 09 Nov 2007
any christmas cd that does not include slade, bruce springsteen, otis redding, gary glitter, shakin' stevens etc or bing crosby's version of white christmas is only fit for the 99p rack!

Product Description
She's been hailed for her multi-octave vocal range--a tool that sometimes detracts from her pop recordings, but actually works quite beautifully in the context of this charming holiday collection. Fans will surely approve of Carey's renditions of slinky secular songs like "Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)" and a nicely subdued "All I Want for Christmas Is You". But where she really surprises is in her unadorned delivery of traditional carols, highlighted by "Silent Night" (which she sings quietly, avoiding the temptation to wail those high notes) and "Jesus, Oh What a Wonderful Child". Merry Christmas is a must for die-hards and a pleasant surprise for the unconverted. --David Sprague

Oh, Christmas! This is a novelty album, but in its wake amazing! Good for Christmas, especially if you are ating christmas dinner! the full range and beauty of her voice, 17 Feb 2007
Most traditional christmas songs are sung in a traditional way and have survived for so long because they sound so good. For a pop star to come along and make many of them sound even better is quite a feat but that is what Mariah Carey has done here. The full range and beauty of her voice are on display on this cd - when you listen to O Holy Night and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen ask yourself this:is there anyone else in the world who could sing these this well? Only bettered by the christmas cd "christmas through your eyes" by gloria estefan.Christina Aguilera has a great voice but on her christmas cd the vocals are too jazzy and bluesy and she tends to show off her voice rather than show off the song. And celine dion's christmas cd lacks punch and the range of sound is not great. However the last five songs on celine's cd are worth hearing. A Christmas Album That Works Outside The Festive Season Also, 04 Jul 2005
Festive albums seem like a time-stalling process, however not every artist that releases one can claim it sold 16 million copies. Merry Christmas was another success from the legendary Miss Mariah. Aside from the expected covers of classics, which she manages to do brilliantly, Carey creates some of her own Christmas masterpieces. The up-tempo plea of "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" and beautiful portrayal of isolated emotions in "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" are enough to weigh up the various feelings of the holiday, but nothing compares to her own true Christmas signature song "All I Want For Christmas Is You", capturing the true energy of the festive spirit. Her vocals are not all shed for fun and games with her true range being explored on the hymn, "O Holy Night". An absolutely wonderful Christmas album, 01 Feb 2005
Few commercial Christmas albums really appeal to me - too many of them mangle the traditional classics I love, especially the hymns, with all sorts of fancy modern sounds that ring hollow to my ears, and, loving the traditional songs so much, few modern Christmas tunes manage to win me over. Ten years after its release, though, Mariah Carey's Merry Christmas CD remains a perennial Christmas favorite of mine. Mariah's vocal talent puts her head and shoulders above every female vocalist out there, and she injects true feeling and spirit into every song she sings. On this album, she combines the new with the old, making this a Christmas CD that almost everyone can love. Like many, I was drawn to this CD after hearing the song All I Want For Christmas Is You; I believe it's the best secular Christmas song since Elvis' Blue Christmas. I had to buy the album for this one song alone, but I was also very anxious to hear what Mariah would do with traditional hymns such as Oh Holy Night - my pick for the greatest Christmas song ever written. Many a soprano shies away from truly hitting the high notes at the end of Oh Holy Night, and given Mariah's vocal range, I felt confident she would do the song justice. I was right, as this is one of the best versions of Oh Holy Night I've ever heard. Mariah's voice is equally angelic on Joy to the World, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, and a properly subdued Silent Night. Jesus Oh What A Wonderful Child is a song I was less familiar with, but it makes for a stunning conclusion to an album that does pay real heed to the reason for the season. Besides All I Want For Christmas Is You, Mariah co-wrote two other songs on the album: Miss You Most (At Christmas Time) and Jesus Born on This Day. The latter is an especially beautiful song that expresses the true meaning of Christmas. She also throws in an exceedingly fun version of Santa Claus is Coming to Town (and, thankfully, I can now think of Mariah rather than Bruce Springsteen whenever I hear this song). The perfect complement to All I Want For Christmas Is You, though, is Christmas (Baby Please Come Home). Put it all together and you have a true modern Christmas classic featuring a wonderful mix of religious and secular songs that radiate both the fun as well as the serious aspects of the Christmas season. Anyone who loves Christmas - and Christmas music in particular - really should make this CD an annual part of his/her holiday celebration.

Great but..., 13 Feb 2006
This is a great CD, obviously for Christmas. But whatever you do...DON'T PUT IT ON REPEAT! You will soon go insane having this on repeat, unless you love Christmas songs. We bought this to put in a jukebox over Christmas, and it was constantly on! Its good if you are having family round, as maybe background music, but loudly, it would drive you insane...
Its Christmaaaaaaaaaaaaas!!, 16 Jan 2006
Most Christmas CD's have some songs that I always skip, but not this one. It had all my favourites from the classics (Slade's Merry Christmas Everyone and Wizzard I wish it could be christmas every day) to some newer ones (The Waitresses Christmas Wrapping and Band Aid 20) Overall a great album with all your festive faves.
Would be 5 if it wasn't for the shocking Michael Ball cover!, 18 Dec 2005
This is a great all-round xmas album and has something for everyone, I just couldn't give it 5 stars because of one major flaw: they put a cover of Chris Rea's 'Driving Home For Christmas' by Michael Ball which is absolute Karaoke (in fact the music is exactly the same as the original) compared to Chris Rea's gravelly voiced awesomeness on the original. If only this CD had 'Fairytale of New York' and kicked out 'Do They Know It's Christmas' it would be complete! The biggest PLUS of this album : it contains probably one of the best ever 80's xmas anthems: The Waitress' 'Christmas Wrapping'!!!
Fantxmas!, 07 Dec 2005
Yet another Xmas Album you say! Yes it is but it has all the old favourites, even clearer then before and with classic hits along with new ones! a brilliant album to listen to at xmas, with dinner, with friends and family in the evening! whenever! definatley worth the money!

One of the best......, 10 Dec 2007
If not the best Christmas album out there ..... and beleive me I should know, I've bought pleanty over the years, I say if your looking for a all round, something for everyone Christmas Album get this one I'll be suprised if your disapointed
111 wizzard and slade!?, 02 Dec 2007
Don't waste your money, 07 Dec 2007
The BEST Christmas album to date, 02 Nov 2008
I saw this and already have it but I just wanted to say that out of all the artists that have released their Christmas album - this one by Lady Mariah Carey is the BEST to date. Also, because it's 14 years old it's really cheap. So - buy the BEST Christmas album as the bargain of the century.

Product Description
It may seem weird to call a seasonal album "essential", but along with Phil Spector's Christmas Gift for You, this is arguably the finest rock & roll Christmas album of all time. Recorded in 1957 at the height of his artistry--when he truly could be called the King of Rock & Roll--this album demonstrates Presley having a lot of vocal fun with a variety of styles, whether it's a carol ("Silent Night") or pop standard (Gene Autry's "Here Comes Santa Claus"). He does one of the greatest versions of "White Christmas" ever recorded, basically using the Drifters' version as a blueprint--and then singing all the parts himself. His "I'll Be Home for Christmas" is definitive--but the best moments are the "new" tracks written specifically for this release, including the classic "Blue Christmas", Lieber & Stoller's "Santa Claus Is Back in Town" (one of the most sexually suggestive holiday tunes ever), and the wonderful, pop-based "Santa, Bring My Baby Back to Me". All these tracks are available on the King of Rock 'n' Roll box set--but if you don't own that, this belongs under any Christmas tree--though Elvis fans have been known to listen to tracks from this in the middle of July! --Bill Holdship

Classic (with reservations), 23 Feb 2004
Elvis' only album of the '50s with no fast tempo rock and roll, and for good reason: it was his first Christmas, so the decibel level had to be lower. He does wail on the incredible blues-rock opener, "Santa Claus Is Back In Town". It's Elvis doin' his thing, driving home the double-entendres. It's been written that this album was banned, and the banners didn't have to go too far into the album to find something...too strong. "Blue Christmas" is medium-tempo blues-rock, a gem of a tune, featuring a typically great vocal and some genuine Presley low-down blues licks. If there was room back in the day, this could gone into the Top 20. "Santa Bring My Baby Back To Me" is a nicely syncopated rocker, a soft vocal over a hard beat. It works. The vocal approach is reminiscent of Conway Twitty's later work on "It's Only Make Believe". And for the remainder - the reason I decline from giving the album/CD *five* stars. Although the material is excellent and well-arranged, we have a near-copy of the Drifters' "White Christmas" and Gene Autry's "Here Comes Santa Claus". They're fun to hear, but you wonder if Elvis and the boys could have come up with a more *original* sound. "I Believe" finds Elvis givin' it his all, but strangely, he seems to be struggling to stay on top of this inspirational power ballad. The gospel sides are done with conviction, beautifully phrased by Presley, but the listener is a bit uncomfortable with the "oil and water" mix: his vocal mannerisms are "pop" and the lyrics are pure gospel. On later gospel releases, Elvis seems to take a step back stylistically and showcase the quartets and instrumental back-up; the song itself. On several tracks from "His Hand In Mine" (1960) and "How Great Thou Art" (1967) maybe he should used more *voice*; on "He Touched Me" (1972) he found the balance.
The 1957 Elvis Christmas album still holds up great today, 12 Dec 2003
"Elvis' Christmas Album" was originally released in 1957 as his fourth album and the first one that followed an obvious thematic concept. You need to keep in mind that this was originally a record album, because there were clearly two sides to Elvis this time around. On the "A" side of the album you Elvis doing rockers and blues numbers like "Santa Claus Is Back in Town," "Here Comes Santa Claus," and the most famous Elvis Christmas track, "Blue Christmas" for the first-half dozen songs. On the "B" side Elvis does gospel songs including "Silent Night," "I Believe," "Peace in the Valley" and "Take My Hand, Precious Lord." Keep in mind that Elvis had only exploded on the music scene the year before and listening to him sing "church" music suddenly made it really difficult to dismiss all the hip shaking. Yes, it is strange that the original Elvis backup group, the Jordanaires, pops up on track only on the "second" side of the album, but there is no doubting Elvis' sincerity in singing these songs. This first Elvis Christmas album is still the best and even those fans who voted for the Vegas Elvis stamp instead of the Young Elvis stamp would have to agree.
Great I'm really enjoying listening to it., 23 Dec 1999
I had this album on LP many years ago. I remember all of the tracks and they are exactly the same on CD. Just right for Christmas.

Don't waste your money, 07 Dec 2007

Wonderful Collection, 02 Dec 2005
Great value for money! Wide range of types of song, artist and genre.
good mix for the festive season, 10 Nov 2008
A good selection of festive music for those that want a bit of everything when it comes to music for Christmas.
Beautiful, thoughtful Christmas album - Recommended, 19 Nov 2008
I haven't been a particular fan of Mary Chapin Carpenter in the past but this album of Christmas songs is a real gem. It is really different to your usual "Jingle Bells" and "White Christmas" festive fare, although there are traditional songs in this collection such as the lovely "Once in Royal David's City" which opens the album, and the absolutely gorgeous performance of "Children Go Where I Send Thee". The rest of the material is new (at least to me, although I understand that a couple of tracks were included on an earlier Mary Chapin Carpenter album)and it is wonderful. The lyrics are thoughtful and really do get to the heart of what Christmas is like (and what it should be about) in 2008. Some of these reflect the spiritual side of Christmas, and, cleverly at the same time, also mirror the hustle and bustle of a modern Christmas in a western industrialised nation ("Christmas Time in the City" is wonderful!) and there is a touch of Christmas romance too. The performances by Chapin Carpenter are really superb, that wonderful deep alto voice really putting meaning and wonderful expression into every note. The musical accompaniment is quite simple country fare, nothing techno here, and it suits the material perfectly.
If you are looking for some Christmas music but want something a bit more reflective, and just a bit different, then you really should buy this album straight away. There is proper Christmas feeling here but it is done with real class and subtlety. I haven't been able to stop playing it since I got it and I have a feeling it will be revisted regularly throughout the year and not just at Christmas.

Product Description
As the song goes, "Merry Christmas" has already "been said many times, many ways". Diana Krall's Christmas Songs is a worthy--though not particularly unique--addition to the holiday catalogue. Krall excels with an approach mastered long ago: elegant delivery that gives extra polish to a very familiar lineup. Some might find her style frosty at times, but that will come as a relief to those who want their carolers to cut through some of the holiday treacle and create a festive, yet grown-up vibe. And Krall does show off her playful side with little, personal touches. In "Winter Wonderland" she promises to "frolic and play the Canadian way", which should draw smiles from her native land. Elsewhere, she ends "Jingle Bells" with the girlishly giddy statement, "I'm just crazy about horses". Well
can't argue with that. --Leah Weathersby
