Product Description
The John Rutter Christmas Album brings together most of the composer's Christmas songs and carols as well as several of his festive choral arrangements, including a rousing "Joy to the World" and the energetic "I saw three ships". Most of the 23 tracks have been taken from extant discs on Rutter's Collegium label although two, "Dormi, Jesu" and "Sans Day carol", were recorded especially for this release. Rutter's first two published compositions, written while he was still a teenager, were Christmas pieces for choir, namely the glorious "Nativity Carol" and the infectious "Shepherd's Pipe Carol". Although very different in character, these two carols (for which Rutter also wrote the test) display the composer's sense of joy and wonder at the Christmas story. More than 30 years later, those sentiments are still there in pieces such as the melting "Dormi, Jesu", commissioned by King's College, Cambridge for the 1999 Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. Under the direction of the composer, the youthful voices of the Cambridge Singers are on sparkling form, as are the City of London Sinfonia and vocal soloists Gerald Finley and Stephen Varcoe. This album deserves to be played over and over--and not just at Christmas. --Rebecca Agnew

Christmas Joy, 07 Mar 2008
I thought this CD had got lost in our recent house move and was delighted when it turned up in one the last boxes to be opened. I immediately rushed to listen again even though it is early March and am once again entranced by the warmth and beauty of the music and the singing. You really can play this CD anytime in the year and that is what I am doing now! If you buy it you will not be disappointed!
WOW - A 'must have' for Christmas, 22 Dec 2007
This CD is just fantastic - be blown away by The Cambridge Singers renditions of John Rutter's Christmas album - the definative version of some of the prettiest and most lyrical Christmas choral music you will ever hear. I just keep playing it over and over again.
Choir members will be inspired to get out their music to re-visit any of these beautiful carols they have sung in the past.
This would make the perfect stocking filler for anyone who appreciates choral singing from a choirboy to your grandmother - or just indulge yourself.
Beautiful CD., 20 Nov 2007
The more technical merits have already been pointed out. I have this on in the background now as its very relaxing. I recommend this as a Christmas treat to yourself, it is like being at an upmarket Carol concert (in a good way!) and when the music stops you find yourself putting it on again and again.
John Rutter's Box of Delights, 26 Dec 2002
This compilation of some of John Rutter's work should be in everyone's Christmas stocking. With sixteen of his own original creations he has added seven arrangements he has made of traditional Christmas music and that written by other composers. What is useful is the grouping of the music into parts - Prologue, The Christmas Story, Christmas Night, Christmas Reflections, Christmas Joy and Epilogue - which allows the listener to select a long or short programme if required. The performances, drawn from sources spanning the years 1985 to 2002, are sheer delight from beginning to end. The Cambridge Singers, with soloists Ruth Holton, Gerald Finlay and Stephen Varcoe, excel with the various moods and rhythms throughout, and the City of London Sinfonia adds stylish and colourful support. The direction of this wonderful festival of music for Christmas is in the capable hands of John Rutter himself who inspires his singers and players. If I were to single out any items from the programme, who could possibly resist the lilting rhythms of `Jesus child' and the `Donkey Carol', and the jaunty bounce of `We wish you a merry Christmas'? On the reflective side, the various lullabies all receive sensitive performances. If you are looking for the perfect combination of joy and reverence, not only at Christmas but at any time of year, you could not possibly rival this CD.

Amazing, 14 Dec 2006
Possibly the best album of all time. Kermit has an especially fantastic voice, a cross between an early Cat Stevens and David Gray in his latest album, Life in Slow Motion. However, I think his rendition of One More Night till Christmas perhaps eclipses both these two great artists. I had heard rumours of a contract with Sony BMG and a solo career, but have no idea why it hasn't materialised. The song Love Is Gone is also an absolute classic, and brings tears to my eyes, especially the second version Track 18, which is perhaps the stand-out song of the entire album (which is saying a lot). Michael Caine also impressed me, and although not perhaps with quite the same talent as Kermit, or even Tiny Tim (whom reminds me of a young Aled Jones, and I believe has the potential to be a massive start when he is a bit older) he fits the role perfectly and I could listen to him sing all day. All in all, probably the greatest movie soundtrack of all time. How this didn't win an oscar I will never know. Buy it...
What can I say..., 12 Mar 2006
It's the Muppets Christmas Carol, a classic in any form, DVD, VHS, or CD.
Brilliant for Christmas time, when you're feeling Christmassy, well anytime of year really.
Great for kids, adults, the elderly.
AND it's got some extra songs on it that arn't in the film!

Ariel, Aurora, Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, Mulan, Pocahontas and Snow White, 23 Dec 2007
This CD features 14 original & classic Christmas songs, 13 of which are sung by the original voices of Disney's most beloved animated heroines - Ariel, Jasmine, Mulan and Pocahontas.
The voices of Aurora, Belle, Cinderella & Snow White on this album aren't the originals.
The 14th song on this album has Jim Brickman on the piano and Wayne Brady from WHOSE LINE IS IT ANYWAY? U.S.A on vocals, and is called BEAUTIFUL.
Track listing:
1. CHRISTMAS IS COMING - Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Sleeping Beauty & Snow White - 3:37.
This song has Disney film references in it, Jasmine says "its more fun than riding a carpet" etc. A song about the build up to Christmas - 5/5.
2. A HOLLY JOLLY CHRISTMAS - Snow White, Grumpy, Bashful & Doc - 2:10.
This up-tempo song is half spoken - 4/5.
3. I'M GIVING LOVE FOR CHRISTMAS - Cinderella - 2:37.
A song for the cheap skates! Cinderella's mice sing on this song, and they are rather annoying 4/5.
4. CHRISTMAS IN THE OCEAN - Ariel and Sebastian - 3:06.
Upbeat and fun - 5/5.
5. IT'S THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR - Cinderella and her mice - 2:54.
A spoken introduction leads into more annoying mice vocals - 3/5.
6. SILVER AND GOLD - Pocahontas - 3.29.
No mentions of Christmas, but still a good song! 3.5/5.
7. HOLIDAYS AT HOME - Belle - 2:32.
My favourite 2 lines in this song - # Where but here at home, could life be quite so kind # and # Holidays at home, that's what Christmas means, to all the lucky ones like me that wont spend Christmas all alone # 5/5.
8. THE HOLLY AND THE IVY: 3:02. Mulan sings this song, although there are no holidays during Christmas in China! 5/5.
9. THE CHRISTMAS WALTZ - Belle - 2:27.
As the title suggests, this is a primarily instrumental number, which sounds like the music on a merry go round! 5/5.
10. ARIEL'S CHRISTMAS ISLAND - Ariel and Sebastian - 2:55. Disney's version of Jimmy Buffet's song Christmas Island. An incredibly catchy song, with a fabulous bridge - 5/5.
11. CHRISTMAS WITH MY PRINCE - Sleeping Beauty - 3:02.
Kim Huber does an excellent vocal impression of Mary Costa's Sleeping Beauty - 4/5.
12. THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS - Snow White, Bashful, Doc & Grumpy - 2:49.
This song has lots of tempo changes, and Snow White is hard to understand - 3/5.
13. THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS - Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, Sleeping Beauty & Snow White - 3:44.
The words to this song are ~
12 tigers purring {Jasmine}
11 pies are baking {Snow White}
10 mermaids swimming {Ariel}
9 roses blooming {Belle}
8 crowns are shining {Sleeping Beauty}
7 dwarfs are dancing {Snow White}
6 mice are sewing {Cinderella}
5 emerald rings {Jasmine}
4 story books {Belle}
3 fairy wishes {Sleeping Beauty}
2 glass slippers {Cinderella}
A magical shell of the sea {Ariel}
Unique and very catchy - 5/5.
14. BEAUTIFUL (Christmas Version)- 3:40.
A gorgeous slow song, Mr Brady sounds like a young Peabo Bryson - 100/100.
Disney told the people making this CD - "write songs that these little girls. 20 years later, will be playing for their daughters and they'll remember these songs growing up with fond memories" and I think that is what they've achieved.
If your little girl enjoys the princesses, this will be great to add to her collection, but preview the songs first on a music website to see if you can stand the CD being played 20 times over!
I gave this album a 4 star overall rating, because it doesn't come with song words.
If you yourself like the voice of a particular Disney princess, they've all released albums of non-Disney songs -
Tami Tappan Damiano - Cinderella.
Susan Egan - broadways original Belle {Paige O Hara was Belle in the animated Beauty and the Beast film.}
Judy Kuhn: Pocahontas.
Lea Salonga: Jasmine and Mulan.
Snow White: Melissa Disney.
Jodi Benson: Ariel.
Kim Huber: Sleeping Beauty.
A perfect stocking filler,
utterly fabulous!

So happy to see this CD at no.1, 22 Dec 2006
The Snowman absolutely makes Christmas for me. The bittersweet story always reminds me that nothing is forever; we should cherish the time we have.
Looking in the Children's Xmas songs category, I noticed that this CD was the top result. I'm so happy to see that so many others appreciate this work as much as I do.
Corection of review, 23 Aug 2006
This is definitly the original soundtrack of the 1982 film "peter auty" is the original singer. Aled jones did not record the song until after the film was made. However a recent dvd of the film used aled's recording instead. It also changed the intro to one with "David bowie". But rest asured this cd is the soundtrack of the film as released in 1982. It is a highly recomended cd.
Instantly evocative, 06 Feb 2006
In the deadly July heat and humidity found in the eastern US, I will play the soundtrack to "The Snowman", and it all comes back. All of the wonder and delight of the film comes rushing back, and I forget the dismal summer season. But even if I didn't know the film, the music stands well on its own. And the recording is a great monument to the British film recording industry. Buy it here; very difficult to find in the US.
The Snowman: A beautiful success in musical imagery, 07 Dec 2005
The nostalgic melody from this album has been bittersweet with a lot of sweet for me since I was really young. I've always been enchanted by the perfectly whimsical, yet tragic sounds created in the score. It's amazing. I hope more people discover this gorgeous music.
A must have for everyone's inner child, 27 Apr 2004
The Snowman is an age-old classic and has been a feature of all the Christmas holidays I can remember, along with Mary Poppins and theNutcracker. The beautiful music appeals to everyone and the simplicity ofthe story means that children of all ages enjoy it. This particularversion is excellent in that it not only has the music but is alsobasically an audio book and tells the story as it is in the film, with themusic in the background. So for the next generation of children stuck inside for the Christmasbreak and for their parents and indeed anyone who feels like reminiscing alittle, this is an brilliant (and might I add affordable!) buy. Enjoy!

The words to this song are ~
12 tigers purring {Jasmine}
11 pies are baking {Snow White}
10 mermaids swimming {Ariel}
9 roses blooming {Belle}
8 crowns are shining {Sleeping Beauty}
7 dwarfs are dancing {Snow White}
6 mice are sewing {Cinderella}
5 emerald rings {Jasmine}
4 story books {Belle}
3 fairy wishes {Sleeping Beauty}
2 glass slippers {Cinderella}
A magical shell of the sea {Ariel}
Susan Egan - broadways original Belle {Paige O Hara was Belle in the animated Beauty and the Beast film.}
Enjoy! Christmas Music - The Sixteen - Harry Christophers Director, 15 Dec 2005
This is now the 11th Christmas that this music has been part of the tradition of my holiday season, and although I've acquired numerous other holiday music collections over the years, this far surpasses any other collection that I own. It is difficult to do justice to this music by describing it in mere words. The collection ranges from the 14th to the 16th Century, and is unlike any other collection of Christmas music available. It evokes the true spirit of the Christmas season, is enlightening, inspirational, and transports the listener far from the trite elements of the 'modern' holiday season. No other choral group can compare to the Harry Christophers The Sixteen (named such as the group consists of four treble/mean, four alto, four tenor and four bass choralists). A truly unique auditory experience, and absolutely worth every penny. ..Not Just for Christmas........., 06 Jan 2004
If its 100% relaxation classics you are after then look no further! Harry Christophers and the Sixteen have not just captured the yuletide moment with this album, but have developed these great themes to be enjoyed at any time. A truly magnificent masterpiece delivered in the most professional manner by this extraordinarily talented group of singers, producing a CD that is more than a purchase, it's an investment in excellent vocal presentation.
An Explosion of Joy!, 01 Feb 2003
This is a wonderful collection of Christmas music by "The Sixteen", a group of sixteen glorious singers who brilliantly capture the magical melodies and harmonies of 15th & 16th Century English and European (mostly German) church music. Best tracks are the soaring "Resonet in Laudibus" by Jacob Handl, "Gaudete" from Piae Cantiones (made famous by Steeleye Span), "In Dulci Jubilo", "Riu, Riu, Chiu" and "The Boar's Head Carol". A marvellous album to put you right in the mood for Christmas! Only disappointment - none of Michael Praetorius' haunting melodies are included.

Simply a Stunning set of Carols, 20 Nov 2008
There are different versions of these carols on different cds. This is one of the few collections, where you really get the best of the best. As the other reviewer said it's too good just for Christmas, such beauty in every carol, and the moment I hear them it lifts me, in a way no other music does. If you listen to any Christmas music this year, make sure it's these carols, because I assure you won't be disappointed with the quality, and the beauty of what's on offer. It is Christmas Music at its best. 10 Stars forget 5.
excellent selection, poor sound quality, 16 Dec 2007
Brilliant choice of carols and great quality singing, however the recordings are very old (from the 1950s and 1960s) and in places this affects the quality. One of the carols (o little town)distorts slightly when it gets very loud and for Once in Royal the first verse is incredibly quiet.
As a soprano, I was also disappointed that Once in Royal didn't include the descant in the last verse.
I can't find a better selection of carols on one CD so get this if you don't mind the odd problem with sound quality.
A work of art, 11 Oct 2006
Possibly the best recording of it's kind out there. Oh, and to the reviewer who has written below mine, I didn't know King's recordings had ladies in the choir? *smirk* Unless you were referring to the male soprano's, of course! Buy it!
Carols By King's College Choir, 09 Aug 2006
This is well sung. It sounds beautiful when the men's voices make counterpoint with the ladies' voices. I love the way how they sing the last two verses of the Sussex Carol because the men sing the words to the tune of the first two verses and the ladies sing the harmony at the same time which I think sounds beautiful. They do it with many other carols as well.
The real spirit of Christmas, 02 Jan 2004
A truly delightful and atmospheric 2 disc collection, some of which were new to me but are now family favourites- especially 'past three o'clock' which has become known as 'Frosty the dog' by my children. The older more Medieval ones are superb in particular, but really a collection with no weak tracks. Ideal! Magical.

The words to this song are ~
12 tigers purring {Jasmine}
11 pies are baking {Snow White}
10 mermaids swimming {Ariel}
9 roses blooming {Belle}
8 crowns are shining {Sleeping Beauty}
7 dwarfs are dancing {Snow White}
6 mice are sewing {Cinderella}
5 emerald rings {Jasmine}
4 story books {Belle}
3 fairy wishes {Sleeping Beauty}
2 glass slippers {Cinderella}
A magical shell of the sea {Ariel}
Susan Egan - broadways original Belle {Paige O Hara was Belle in the animated Beauty and the Beast film.}
Ideal! Magical.
Sublime and toe-curling nostalgia, 23 Nov 2004
Once again EMI has dug deep into its archive and plucked out 21 silly Christmas tracks which were almost certainly regularly played on BBC Radio's "Childrens' Favourites" in the 1950s and 60s, and "Junior Choice" in the early 70s. Actually this release is a "revised repeat" of a CD bearing the same title from 1992; eleven of the tracks are repeated, and among the ten to be added (at the expense of the likes of Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole etc) are two each from Pinky & Perky, The Chipmunks, and Rolf Harris (but not "Seven White Boomers"). So this is a collection that is both juvenile and obscure. Depending upon taste the best numbers are from Alma Cogan, and her 50s rival Eve Boswell, from Freddie "Parrot Face" Davies ("I'm A Little Christmas Cracker") and Terry Hall & Lenny The Lion, who wanted a hippopotamus for Christmas. Mel Blanc's "Christmas Chopsticks" is fun, too. At the other end of the scale the contributions of Clive Dunn, Mandy Miller, Ronnie Hilton (deputising for Bing), and Rolf Harris's "Little Drummer Boy" are toe-curlingly embarassing, though Rolf does redeem himself later with a typical piece of politically-incorrect whimsy, "The Wonderful Christmas Pig". Can't imagine what children today would make of it all if any of it were played on the radio, though. The recordings date from 1940 (Arthur Askey) to 1970; only the very earliest one or two sound rough. All in all it's great for a laugh, for nostalgia. A warning though: the CD bears the dreaded "Copy Control" technology so some PCs and car CDs may have trouble playing it.

Customer Reviews
The song Love Is Gone is also a | | |
