Refreshing Change, 18 Nov 2008
After years of listening to the usual American performers/crooners on every Christmas c.d. I could lay my hands on, it's been a great pleasure to hear the traditional English style of singing used to such heart warming effect. Playing this c.d. on Christmas day is going to make myself and my family feel right at home.
Great Traditional Christmas Tunes, 11 Dec 2007
Realy good album of christmas carols, different because its in a traditional folk style rather than choral.
I really enjoy it.

Product Description
Brought together more by accident than design in the late 1980s, the relationship between Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band has been on/off but one that has produced a series of fascinating albums. Despite secular works, it is for their Christmas collaborations that they are best known, especially the riotous seasonal tours (pantomimes and all). This outing took place in 1997 and spawned this live album, which leaves the capers behind and concentrates on the music. The usual clichés are firmly avoided in favour of the more obscure, with even familiar carols such as "Away In A Manger", "Ding Dong Merrily On High" and "I Saw Three Ships" presented on medieval instruments and in unfamiliar arrangements. Prior is in fine voice throughout, suited perhaps more to this style of music than the folk rock of Steeleye Span, and the Carnivals approach their task with gusto. Those looking for a studio album should try Carols and Capers which, like this release, proves that there is much more to Christmas music than Noddy Holder. --Phil Udell

This is how Christmas should be., 24 Oct 2001
Fabulous sound, wonderful mix of tracks, music that really sounds like the family singing round the Yule Log. Maddy Prior's voice has never been more sound or reliable. Especially excellent is the first track - but all the tracks are just so singable!! This is mulled wine and open fire music to really set the scene for the festivities, and no collection should be without it.

Celtic corker, 08 Dec 2007
A little gem of a cd; there are quite a few songs that I had never heard before which makes it a change from the normal Christmas carol compilations - though for all I know they may be Celtic (or Irish) standards.
The instrumentation, as one might expect from the title, includes harps, pipes whistles and guitars as well as strings and is very nicely done; as someone else has remarked the effect is otherworldly in parts, and in others I find it attractively 'ancient'.
I would thoroughly recommend this cd as something to listen to in it's own right or as background music whilst putting the tree up, which I suspect is what most people would want it for.
An absolute snip at the price too !!
different, nice but a bit twee!, 01 Dec 2007
I have this album, it's ok, there are a couple of nice tracks, some very odd tracks and some that are a bit twee - ~It is an 'irish' cd, but not as good as clannad, enya, moya brennan.
It's ok for Background Music.
I would rather listen Moya Brenan's Irish Christmas!
EXCELLENT AND UNUSUAL, 21 Jan 2001
what an excellent c.d.! this is no run-of-the-mill christmas album. the selection of songs is unlike any other, and the music and singing are other-worldly, transporting you away from this mortal sphere. the only thing that could possibly be better would be for enya to put out a christmas album! i'm buying copies for all my family for next christmas. i'd recommend this c.d. to absolutely anyone!

Outstanding Christmas album, 08 Dec 2003
This is the sixth in the series of special Christmas albums dedicated to raising money for the Special Olympics, but this one is very different from previous albums that generally featured pop and rock music. This album, as its title suggests, features acoustic country and bluegrass music. As far as I know, all the recordings are new although some of the artists have recorded their chosen songs previously. Many of the songs here will be familiar to you but the simple acoustic settings featured here allow the singers to bring out the true meaning of each song The set opens with Reba singing a great version of Silent night. Reba previously recorded this for her first Christmas album, Merry Christmas to you, in the eighties. On that occasion, she did a spoken introduction explaining how the song came to be written but she did not repeat that on this new recording. Dan Tyminski does a sparkling version of Frosty the snowman, on which a couple of children (James and Julia Knobloch) sing backup on the word Stop. Willie Nelson proves that he still has what it takes with a fine rendition of Please come home for Christmas. Alan Jackson is brilliant on the rarely recorded Just put a ribbon in your hair, an excellent Christmas love song. Alison Kraus deviates a little from the acoustic concept on her own song, Only you can bring me cheer, although it is a brilliant recording. Marty Stuart is next on Even Santa Claus gets the blues, which is a great song that he wrote himself. Earl Scruggs contributes an instrumental version of Jingle bells. Ralph Stanley sings Christmas is near, a song he wrote and first recorded as one of the Stanley brothers. Patty Loveless is a classy singer who is in her element on this type of album as she proves with one of the finest renditions of O come all ye faithful that I've ever heard. Wynonna began her career singing acoustic country as one half of the Judds and shows that she can still do that type of music with an excellent version of O holy night. Pat Green, a singer new to me, sings Winter wonderland. Sam Bush provides the second and last instrumental on this album with his version of Let it snow. Ricky Skaggs reminds us that he can still record quality music on Away in a manger. Rhonda Vincent treats us to Christmas time at home, a great bluegrass song that she wrote herself. Tift Merritt does an excellent and very distinctive version of I'll be home for Christmas. Pop-jazz singer Norah Jones sings and plays piano on the final track, Peace, without any other accompaniment. This is an outstanding collection that will give all fans of acoustic music a lot of pleasure as well as benefiting a worthy charity.

This is simply such a beautiful disc of carols sung with great style and simplicity by a splendid school choir whose singing match those of many cathedral choirs. Mark Wardell's organ playing on the great 1905 Hill organ of All Saints' Hove is perfect. I do hope that the disc will be available again soon. Christmas would not be Christmas without it!

If You Were There Then, You Will Be Now, 30 Nov 2008
If you go to a Stones gig you will find a fifty year age cross section in the audience. This is not the case with L&M and, maybe I'm wrong, but if you weren't 'getting down' in 1973ish then you are unlikely to enjoy this. But if you were BUY THIS DVD. It is a very intimate concert relayed from Santa Barbara in 2005. There is plenty of interraction with all involved and it must have been great to have been there and see these guys and a great band after so many years. Kenny looks great. Jimmy looks like he's been eating too many pretzels but he still plays a mean set of strings! My one 'spit my dummy out' is that my favourite L&M track (Move On from the Mother Lode album) is not on it but it still gets 5 stars and multiple goose bumps of nostalgia. Thanks Guys!
Loggins and Messina Live, 24 Mar 2007
I loved Loggins and Messina First time around , and bought their albums on Import. I have been catching up with a lot of my heroes now on DVD.
Some are dissappointing, and the years have been unkind . NOT THESE TWO.
I loved the subtlety of the beginning, and the voices and arrangements are 1st Class. A Most enjoyable way to reunite for an evening.
JIM DEVLIN . March 2007
A fantastic live DVD concert recording, 18 Dec 2005
I have been a fan of these two guys since the 70s and was very disappointed that they split right before their first UK tour. All we had were the albums. I've since re-purchased all of them on CD. They released many of my favourite albums including Mother Lode and On Stage. They've been going their separate ways for the last 30 years or so. Now back together for this 2005 tour, none of their magic had diminished. Great songs, well sung and with a marvellous band. Rather in the mould of Brian Wilson, they have surrounded themselves with stellar musicians who can make the most of Kenny and Jim's intricate arrangements. All in all an excellent release. The DVD release of this concert (it is also available as an audio CD) includes more material, truly fantastic 5.1 DTS sound and a bonus section of an early 70s performance. Now all I need is that postponed UK visit! Kenny and Jim - make it happen soon!

Great music from Vaughan Williams, 22 May 2004
This is a great album with some excellent music on. It is very relaxing to just sit down and listen to it.
Chritmas Carols Christ's Hospital Choir, 01 Jan 2008

YEAH SWEET. SWEET AS A NUT. SWEET AS (NOT), 07 Jan 2008
1st off. SJH makes Jack White look like Jason Falkner. (Or Donovan) For different reasons. And. Although I was glued to Meg's torso on a recent concert appearance on Jools Holland. Definately Nurse Julie for me.
Lets see what William Hamper has got in his Christmas Box.
Upon seeing the title of this latest Opus. Xmas 1979. I thought Billy's music had swerved abrupty in the direction of. NWOBHM. However. It is. In Fact. Just another Stem Cell. Cloned from "The Messerschmitt Pilots Severed Hand" (BUY THIS AND FORGET EVERYTHING THAT CAME AFTER!!!)
And. See me. Right Div. Yeah. I only just noticed that Billy's Drummer is Silly Simon from the Silly Old Daggermen. They used to be in ACW'S Medway Bands Co-Op(Nafferoonie) and play 'Downstairs' at Churchills (Formerly the Army & Navy)in Chatham.
Simon (AKA Wolf?) certainly has improved tho'. Sounds just like Keith Moon (Chances!!) I bet he got a DrumWorkshop Double Pedal off Billy for Xmas - HELL NO!! and knick knack Paddy Whack (Chuck That In The Bin!!) He probably got. A super cool. Original Sixtees. Champagne Sparkle. 13" x 4". Slingerland Radio King. That used to belong to the Drummer from - GRAHAM PARKER AND THE RUMOUR!!!
The music on this album. Is. All nicely scrubbed up by Jim Riley again. (His Harp playing sounds like Mr Bloe) Riley has managed to all but stop Childish singing his vocals over the CB Radio(Shame). Wont be long and the MBE's will be knocked into shape just like the Major Setback Band doing Feelgood covers upstairs at the Crown in Rochester on Fridee Nites for the REST OF THEIR LIVES!!
WARS ALIVE!! Steven. Youve got within a Gnats - But if you really wanted to scrape the Ring of the bottom of the Medway Barrel. After the twilight of your career. You should have got in Melvin Wallace.
That would have been cool.

Encyclopedic survey with some wonderful bonuses, 11 Oct 2004
Grainger's piano music is notoriously difficult, and it's also fairly uneven, so a complete survey is bound to have its highs and lows. Martin Jones does make a few obvious fluffs, but these are easy to overlook, given the great musicality of these performances. The sound quality is good, though some may find the tone a little too mellow and the acoustic a little too spacious for their tastes. For me, perhaps the best things about this set are the fillers on the 5th disc - here are some fantastic gems for multiple pianos and and multiple pianists. The English Dance for 2 pianos-6 hands is simply fantastic. Overall, this is a very enjoyable set, so long as you're reasonably selective. A must for Grainger fans, and enhanced by excellent programme notes.

Finally all the BSB videos in one place!, 26 Apr 2003
After spending ages waiting for MTV to have a BSB special in order to see their older vids I was ecstatic when Jive decided to release this DVD. Finally you can watch whatever BSB vid you choose at the click of a mouse without having to record or download the thing. The only disappointment is that the european version of I'll Never Break Your Heart isn't included (the american one is) and the video for Drowning is also not present. Other than that, a top notch buy!
Great videos from the boys, 21 Nov 2001
Being a big Backstreet fan, I know that videos were not released with the band's last 2 albums 'Millennium' or 'Black and Blue', so I was thrilled to be at last able to have all the new videos (I Want It That Way, Larger Than Life, Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely, The One, Shape Of My Heart, The Call and More Than That). This collection also includes the newer version of the video for I'll Never Break Your Heart, instead of the old ski-themed one. The only bad thing is that the video DOES NOT include the new hit Drowning, much to my disappointment, as most websites advertise that it does. Also, being a picky-person, I noticed a printing error on the back - it doesn't include I'll Never Break Your Heart in the list, even though it is on the tape. But I'm sure that won't bother you buyers!. Great songs, great videos, especially Quit Playin Games and More Than That. :) Buy it now! I only wish little bits like the boys talking about each vid could have been slipped in, but alas no.
go out + buy chapter 1 by the Backstreet Boys, best cd out!, 01 Nov 2001
I dont know how i can make you buy this album, all i can say is that it is absolutely amazin. It has all their released singles on it. Its very diverse, somewhat unusual for a pop band but bsb are bigger and better then the stereo type. On this hot album are slow love songs way back from 1996 like i'll never break your heart- my favourite of their songs. Since then 'Quit playing games' a massive world known single, 'I want it that way', no 1 in England, 'All i have to give', and 'As long as you love me'. Their latest ballads include, 'Shape of my heart which is of unique style and the more r&b, latino style of 'More than that' another one of my favourites. Their latest single is an added bonus called 'Drowning'. Their more up tempo songs include 'Everyone' which is a great holloween single.'Larger than life' , 'The one' written by Brian a member of the band. They are a talented group and this cd does them justice. You would be missing out to not get it!
