Best Xmas album ever, 07 Oct 2008
This CD is a delight capturing the sparkle and fun of Xmas. It is light classical music at its very best. I play Troika and I know the festive season has begun.
Erratum, 19 Jul 2005
I might well write my previous review of this album anonymously - the theme-tune for the TV coverage of the London Olympics is NOT the Bacchanale from Glazunov's 'The Four Seasons', but the music which the late Ron Goodwin wrote for the film 'The Trap'. The two tunes share an exhilarating, wintry feel, but that is no excuse. Apologies to Ron, and to any readers misled by my error!
a surprise buy, 27 Dec 2004
Ive had this cd for sometime. I must have bought in its first incarnation. This was also a surprise buy because I was looking hard for a good xmas cd at the time. I saw it. Heard it in the cd booth, & bought it!! Its one of the best xmas cds around. Go buy you will not be disappointed!!
Simply Wonderful Listening, 21 Dec 2001
I have tried to buy this again for two years and I am thrilled it has been re-released. The CD is filled with many classical tunes that featured as THE Christmas TV tunes in my childhood and teens e.g. the Timex advert. Great tunes combined with good artists and best of all, not what you hear playing in all the supermarkets! A truely "Classey" classic that I would recommend to anyone who likes good music.

Bah Humbag!, 30 Oct 2008
Absolutely awful, this is a shoddy complilation of Xmas songs. The sound quality is terrible and the album seems to be a montage of old radio broadcasts. At times it seems that Sinatra is singing with a bucket on his head. If you want real nostalga then this album may appeal but I would advise you to stay well clear.
For a Classic Christmas, 30 Nov 2007
I would disregard the first review of this CD and skip straight to the second. This CD is wonderful. For those that want a more traditional, classic Christmas this is the one to get. Sit by a roaring fireside under the twinkling lights of the christmas tree, mulled wine in one hand, mince pie in the other and this music playing in the background. Truly magical!
My favourites on the 2 CD's (bargain!) are Dean Martin's "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas", Louis Armstrong's "Zat you Santa Claus" and Frank Sinatra's "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas".
The quality of the music is as good as you can get when the recordings are so old. It's not crackly and inaudible however, just full of charm.
You really can't go wrong purchasing this! Merry Christmas!
Superb- A Heartwarming Soundtrack to Your Xmas, 25 Nov 2007
I really dont understand the last reviewers negative comments. True, these recordings arent modern quality ... GOOOOOOD !. These were recorded well over 50 years ago, what do you expect ?. For me, this adds to the experience.
These recordings are good quality, not like some of those rediculous Rat Pack
sets you get, which are live & terrible quality. Most are studio recordings & some are songs lifted from live recordings of festive radio shows (still recorded in a studio). I love this 3 cd set, just pop it on, on Christmas morning ... Perfect.
Don't Buy This, 07 Dec 2006
Don't buy this CD. The sound quality is absolutely appalling -- it's as if someone is holding a microphone to a cheap radio with bad reception. Dreadful, absolutely waste of money even though it is cheap. (I'd give it ``minus'' stars if I could.)

Amazing, 14 Dec 2006
Possibly the best album of all time. Kermit has an especially fantastic voice, a cross between an early Cat Stevens and David Gray in his latest album, Life in Slow Motion. However, I think his rendition of One More Night till Christmas perhaps eclipses both these two great artists. I had heard rumours of a contract with Sony BMG and a solo career, but have no idea why it hasn't materialised. The song Love Is Gone is also an absolute classic, and brings tears to my eyes, especially the second version Track 18, which is perhaps the stand-out song of the entire album (which is saying a lot). Michael Caine also impressed me, and although not perhaps with quite the same talent as Kermit, or even Tiny Tim (whom reminds me of a young Aled Jones, and I believe has the potential to be a massive start when he is a bit older) he fits the role perfectly and I could listen to him sing all day. All in all, probably the greatest movie soundtrack of all time. How this didn't win an oscar I will never know. Buy it...
What can I say..., 12 Mar 2006
It's the Muppets Christmas Carol, a classic in any form, DVD, VHS, or CD.
Brilliant for Christmas time, when you're feeling Christmassy, well anytime of year really.
Great for kids, adults, the elderly.
AND it's got some extra songs on it that arn't in the film!

I bought this a couple of years ago and return to it regularly - a sure sign of a good recording. I like the music of Vaughan Williams and this is a good example of his music. The Fantasia was a big surprise - its a lovely setting of some well known carols. John Barrow has a superb baritone voice. The Hodie takes a little more getting into but it is worth the effort. Both choirs and orchestra have good sounds. At this price you can't go wrong! A most incredible, beautiful, and moving recording, 03 Mar 2002
I first became aware of Hodie when I performed the work in high school. While it is true that Vaughn-Williams does use a variety of styles, this is much more than a compendium of musical approaches. Each style is well chosen to provide an appropriate context for the words in a way matched by few composers - intimate in "The Oxen", hushed and reverential in "No sad thought his soul affright", and imposing and even majesterial in "The March of the Three Kings". I can't imagine how anyone could listen to the Epilogue (especially as performed here) with it's quoting of the beginning of St. John's gospel without being utterly moved. Because of the beauty of the work (only a critic would give it "bad press") and the quality of the performance, it quickly became one of my most beloved recordings, defining for me how this work should be performed just as Karl Richter's Mass in b Minor and Colin Davis's Mozart Requiem have. The singers all have incredibly beautiful voices and each use their voice very sensitively. Just listen to John Shirley-Quirk's simple yet eloquent singing in "The Oxen", describing the animals in the manger on their knees or Janet Baker's "Lullaby" with a beauty that can bring tears to your eyes. Richard Lewis likewise provides a good range from the heroic to the sensitive - one of the best performances of his I have heard. The choral work is likewise fantastic. I have been searching for this work on CD for years to replace my well-loved but somewhat worn-out LP copy and am delighted that it is finally available. If you love choral music, Vaughn-Williams's work, or just appreciate beautiful singing, I would strongly urge you to purchase this recording while it is still available.

So happy to see this CD at no.1, 22 Dec 2006
The Snowman absolutely makes Christmas for me. The bittersweet story always reminds me that nothing is forever; we should cherish the time we have.
Looking in the Children's Xmas songs category, I noticed that this CD was the top result. I'm so happy to see that so many others appreciate this work as much as I do.
Corection of review, 23 Aug 2006
This is definitly the original soundtrack of the 1982 film "peter auty" is the original singer. Aled jones did not record the song until after the film was made. However a recent dvd of the film used aled's recording instead. It also changed the intro to one with "David bowie". But rest asured this cd is the soundtrack of the film as released in 1982. It is a highly recomended cd.
Instantly evocative, 06 Feb 2006
In the deadly July heat and humidity found in the eastern US, I will play the soundtrack to "The Snowman", and it all comes back. All of the wonder and delight of the film comes rushing back, and I forget the dismal summer season. But even if I didn't know the film, the music stands well on its own. And the recording is a great monument to the British film recording industry. Buy it here; very difficult to find in the US.
The Snowman: A beautiful success in musical imagery, 07 Dec 2005
The nostalgic melody from this album has been bittersweet with a lot of sweet for me since I was really young. I've always been enchanted by the perfectly whimsical, yet tragic sounds created in the score. It's amazing. I hope more people discover this gorgeous music.
A must have for everyone's inner child, 27 Apr 2004
The Snowman is an age-old classic and has been a feature of all the Christmas holidays I can remember, along with Mary Poppins and theNutcracker. The beautiful music appeals to everyone and the simplicity ofthe story means that children of all ages enjoy it. This particularversion is excellent in that it not only has the music but is alsobasically an audio book and tells the story as it is in the film, with themusic in the background. So for the next generation of children stuck inside for the Christmasbreak and for their parents and indeed anyone who feels like reminiscing alittle, this is an brilliant (and might I add affordable!) buy. Enjoy!

Enjoy!
close to perfection, 21 Jan 2008
The score for the film The Nightmare before Christmas is brilliant in its own strange way. Both the music and the lyrics are written by Danny Elfman, and he also sings the main character of jack Skellington.
The songs are delightful and variated, and you discover something new in the arrangement, every time you listen to them. Besides, the instrumental tracks are beautiful and melancholy, a nice contrast to the humourous and often lively songs. If you like the film or are just a little bit interested in music, you should definetly buy this CD. It has so many great tunes, and the orchestration is just perfect. All in all, a soundtrack quite out of the ordinary.
Magical, 29 Nov 2006
I completely agree with the other reviewer. You shouldn't dismiss The Nightmare Before Christmas as being just a Disney film for kids. The music is so full of depth and charm that even the coldest of reviewers surely couldn't fault it.
While there are some clear standout tracks (Sally's Song, What's This, This is Halloween, Kidnap the Sandy Claws and Oogie-Boogie's song spring to mind), each track is full of the same magical energy and vibrancy that only Danny Elfman can achieve.
Truly wonderful. I bought the DVD first, and found myself humming to the tracks, wishing I had the soundtrack so I could listen to it on my mp3 player.
Superb., 16 Sep 2006
Once again, Danny Elfman has done it again. He is just the best composer by far for musical films. A listen to this will prove my point. It's so, so good.

(I'd give it ``minus'' stars if I could.) Amazing, 14 Dec 2006

Christmas Music - The Sixteen - Harry Christophers Director, 15 Dec 2005
This is now the 11th Christmas that this music has been part of the tradition of my holiday season, and although I've acquired numerous other holiday music collections over the years, this far surpasses any other collection that I own. It is difficult to do justice to this music by describing it in mere words. The collection ranges from the 14th to the 16th Century, and is unlike any other collection of Christmas music available. It evokes the true spirit of the Christmas season, is enlightening, inspirational, and transports the listener far from the trite elements of the 'modern' holiday season. No other choral group can compare to the Harry Christophers The Sixteen (named such as the group consists of four treble/mean, four alto, four tenor and four bass choralists). A truly unique auditory experience, and absolutely worth every penny.
..Not Just for Christmas........., 06 Jan 2004
If its 100% relaxation classics you are after then look no further! Harry Christophers and the Sixteen have not just captured the yuletide moment with this album, but have developed these great themes to be enjoyed at any time. A truly magnificent masterpiece delivered in the most professional manner by this extraordinarily talented group of singers, producing a CD that is more than a purchase, it's an investment in excellent vocal presentation.
An Explosion of Joy!, 01 Feb 2003
This is a wonderful collection of Christmas music by "The Sixteen", a group of sixteen glorious singers who brilliantly capture the magical melodies and harmonies of 15th & 16th Century English and European (mostly German) church music. Best tracks are the soaring "Resonet in Laudibus" by Jacob Handl, "Gaudete" from Piae Cantiones (made famous by Steeleye Span), "In Dulci Jubilo", "Riu, Riu, Chiu" and "The Boar's Head Carol". A marvellous album to put you right in the mood for Christmas! Only disappointment - none of Michael Praetorius' haunting melodies are included.

This is a wonderful CD with traditional Christmas music. Surprised by review complaining about sound quality - no problems at all with my copy - completely hiss free in fact!
Great content - techically flawed, 19 Dec 2005
This CD is an example of why people resent paying high prices (especially in the UK) for CDs. It is a long time since I have heard such a shoddy recording with unacceptable levels of hiss and distortion as well poorly equalised volume levels across the album. This is a pity since the material is actually very good and is the perfect background to Christmas - call me Scrooge if you will, but shame on UCJ (Universal) - their sound engineers do not deserve a good Christmas - probably the technically the worst recording on CD ever! A message for the manufacturers of CDs/DVDs is as the playing equipment gets better we have yet to see any real effort being made to lift the qualities of recordings.

(I'd give it ``minus'' stars if I could.) Amazing, 14 Dec 2006
A Christmas Cracker, 11 Mar 2007
Enjoy!
close to perfection, 21 Jan 2008
Excellent, 27 Dec 2005
A refreshing Christmas album..., 24 Jan 2006
In the midst of "poppy" American singers coming out with less than traditional Christmas records, and cheesy fake Celtic Christmas albums recorded by people who think they can make good, genuine Irish music just because they own a penny whistle, there is still hope! Moya Brennan, lead singer of the Irish family band Clannad, has finally released her own Christmas album. Yes, she has appeared on many, many Christmas albums in the past, but this album is quite different from any of those. From the first track to the last, beautiful vocals adorn every track. Believe me - Moya cares about quality. Rumor has it she even hanged Christmas lights in the studio as this album was being recorded. The instrumentalists knew exactly what they were doing, too. Also, Moya's harp she found in Two Horizons is back, and we hear it throughout the whole of this album. From beginning to end, this album definitely has a Moya feel. And a Moya feel is a genuine Celtic feel from a genuine Irish lady - the first lady of Celtic music. BTW, my favorite tracks are Do You Hear / Don Oíche ud i mBeithil, Joy To The World, I Still Believe, In Dulci Jubilo, and Oíche Chúin (Silent Night), although every track on this album is exceptional. This review is purposely not too in-depth, because I want you to listen to the album and develop your own feel for the album, instead of taking what I've said and making it your own. Do yourself a favor: enhance your Christmas memories this year with a copy of this album!
The Christmas Album much needed, 04 Dec 2005
The problem with Christmas Albums can be that they sound "One Take" not much thought "Sing a Longs". In this case this album uses both Carols and Christmas Songs in a respectful joyous and caring sense. Thus the 12 tracks have been given proper preparation. For me the best are "In the Bleak Midwinter",which is sung in a gentle nurturing style which symbolises this singer and can hardly be bettered and."Deck the Halls" is for me another oustanding performance with an enchanting melody.I would ask people not to judge the album on the first track which is an atmospheric,"The Wexford Carol" which follows is on firm footing and nothing jarrs.
merry xmas!!!!!!!!!!!, 28 Nov 2005
elder sister of enya, moya's carea has been largely over shadowed by her sibling yet has a much better voice and varied style of music. Moya weaves her distinct irish tones round christian favourites such as christina rosetti's 'in the bleak midwinter and secular holiday tunes such as 'deck the halls'. A christmas album to curl up to infront of the fire and relax to in the long nights!
buyers beware your in for a scare!!, 28 Nov 2005
